My jaw is on the floor - that you a) pulled this off with such aplomb and b) that you went fingerstyle over pick and were so damn quick. That's one killer performance, especially the "Mirrors" mid-section ... somebody call the fire brigade because that sh-t was on fire🔥🚒👩‍🚒 (It's nuts to think that Greg Lake didn't even play bass before King Crimson and picked it up at the request of Robert Fripp!)

This has been one of my favourite songs since I was a little kid and I've been trying to make sense of the bassline for a while. It's like the glue that holds the chaos together. I've searched through many, many bass covers, but you're the only one who nailed it. To be honest, the bassline is still something I can't quite get my head around, but hearing it played like that was super cool!
@RichardIresonMusician
@RichardIresonMusician 19 дней назад
@CanIBorrowYourRototiller thank you so much for your kind comments. That was the very first album I ever bought, have loved it ever since. The bassline, especially the middle bit is probably the most challenging I've ever attempted. It took months to learn!!!
@CanIBorrowYourRototiller
@CanIBorrowYourRototiller 18 дней назад
@RichardIresonMusician I bet it took you months to learn! The finger picking during the start/stop sections really blew my mind. But what's really fascinating to watch are the middle sections where he doesn't seem to be following any discernable rules of music at all. He's just all over the place playing any notes that fit...using really odd ways to get from here to there. Seeing you actually play it was pretty damn cool, and it looks super challenging. Like I said, I looked through many bass covers trying to find an accurate one, and I found someone who tried to play it using the rules of a standard blues scale. Didn't even come close - the song doesn't follow ANY rules as far as I can tell. Good choice for your first album purchase! The first album I bought (or more accurately was bought for me cause I was too young to have money) was Propaganda by Sparks. My parents already owned a copy of Kimono My House and I'd already played that half a million times... I actually discovered King Crimson through my Dad. When I was around three years old, I used to get up at an ungodly hour and bug my parents to wake up because I was bored. My Dad had this idea that if he taught me how to use the record player they might get a little more sleep. They had this massive collection of 60s and 70s music - mostly psychedelic rock. Turns out he was right. I would just pick albums to listen to based on how interesting the cover was and wouldn't move from that spot until they woke up or called me for breakfast or whatever. Speaking of my Dad, I actually sent him a link to this video because I was so impressed by it, and he agreed that it was pretty mind blowing. A week later, he emailed to say that he'd had the song stuck in his head for a solid week. Haha. Sorry Dad.

@CanIBorrowYourRototiller what a fantastic story. I'm guessing that you must be much younger than me, I'm 66, if your parents were into psychedelic rock! My parents taste in music was firmly in the '40s! Your parents brought you up well I imagine!🙂
@CanIBorrowYourRototiller
@CanIBorrowYourRototiller 17 дней назад
@RichardIresonMusician Well, I'm nearing 48 years old, so I'm definitely not young anymore...my Mom is about your age and my Dad is 75. Actually, you look very similar to my Dad. Same beard and everything. I have to say that I appreciate the fact that there was never any censorship when it came to the kind of music I was allowed to listen to. My Mom grew up in a Catholic household where it was strictly forbidden to do things that might displease God, such as painting your fingernails red. There were only Dutch polka albums in their house. They were also extremely supportive of my musical interests. When I expressed an interest in the piano, they went and bought a damn piano! They weren't wealthy either. I started out in Royal Conservatory, but my piano teacher was a real psycho and she used to yell, "WRONG!" whenever I played a wrong note and it scared the shit out of me. All to prepare for local piano competitions where the big grand prize was a plastic trophy. OOOOOO. When I told them that I was fed up with classical and wanted to take lessons in pop and rock at the music school downtown, I expected some pushback, but no. They were totally fine with it. I don't think they liked my piano teacher either. So yeah - it was very cool to be exposed to so many different types of music at such a young age. I feel like the spirit of psychedelic rock is embedded in my DNA in some ways... I'll stop now, cause I do tend to go on when there's no character limit. Anyway...I subscribed to your channel and I have to say that your recent Nirvana cover was also very cool! Great band.

If possible leave your practice equipment set up and your guitar out so all you need to do is pick it up and play. I come back to revisit your page for this video especially. What a masterpiece, man! I'm about 1 and half months into "Aqualung" from Tull - and I suspect it's going to take me, AT LEAST another week or so before I can play it with any degree of satisfaction from start to finish. I have to say, when it takes me THAT long to learn a tune to which I grew up listening, it removes a LOT of the fun and becomes a grueling nightmare. But I'm not quitting now, that's for sure - I'm so close, I can taste victory! All that said, I couldn't be NEARLY as proud of that as you are of this, man! Once again, for like the 14th time - STANDING OVATION, sir!

Even if I grew up listening to that song every single day, and I did NOT, although Crimson was definitely in rotation on my turn-table, it would take me well over 6 months to commit something that complex to memory. I've been told there's some science to practicing for only 10 to 20 minutes per day - but I've never seen any results with that method. I have some trouble even hearing the bass at some points like in the very beginning of the song when the main riff plays with it.
