King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King ALBUM REVIEW 

Never understood the criticism of progressive rock as being overindulgent. I can totally get into a song with the structure of verse, chorus, verse, 12 minute guitar solo.

King Crimson - In The Court of The Crimson King: Song By Song Analysis (According to fantano): 2:34 21st Century Schizoid Man: "Features feverish riffs and some insane drum fills. It's a no-holds-barred track with some extremely just escalating and exciting saxophone leads. It has catchy distorted vocals on the hook; it's just a really heavy track." 3:02 I Talk To The Wind: "Has balladry and flute harmonies. Toning things down a lot more, but still very detailed, beautiful, and inspiring. While the tune is still very much a rock song, the melodies and the chords being played feels so folky in a way I mean it's just archaic kind of in a sense. It's kind of like I'm hearing this old music from a completely different world or something like that. The melody is absolutely intoxicating and even though this is a quieter song the drums still very very detailed and kind of improvisational against the song but still not really upon the beauty of it, enhancing it. And the flute solo on this thing is great." 3:45 Epitaph: "Extremely dark middle piece of this album. It is a mellotron kissed dirge that really helped associate this instrument with progressive rock and King Crimson in general. They went on to use this instrument many many many times on subsequent albums. This keyboard instrument was an extremely important piece of technology for its time because it was kind of playing tones that were essentially samples but it's got kind of like a grainy quality to it that feels familiar like I'm hearing an orchestra or something like that but it's also very haunting. King Crimson definitely shoots for something sort of orchestral at the beginning of this track with some big drum rolls, a lot of reverb and when the song finally kicks in, it is just absolute drama being filtered through this rock music lends. The guitar chords on this thing are just like breathtaking whether it's the hugely strummed acoustic guitar chords that just call out with echo again and again and again along with some very very, I'll use the word again, dramatic arpeggiated guitar chords and they slowly build the track higher and higher and higher not just instrumentally but emotionally I mean this song just feels like death to me. Every single crescendo the band brings on has this intense wave of sadness to it that I think very few artists ever have bottled into a piece of music this well. The track is just an absolute funeral dirge especially during the last minute and 47 seconds of this thing where the music is incredibly heavy with the drums and the mellotron." 5:45 Moonchild - "Equally as effective as the last. The track starts off with all these mournful guitar leads and eventually goes into some very somber guitar chords and keyboards and while it is a very pretty tune, I loved the vocal melody on this track, the band quickly kind of evolves into this very sort of quiet understated and very spacious improv session where you're hearing nothing but Keys, drums, guitars and later some vibraphone. Everybody is making sound but nobody wants to step on one another and you're hearing the instruments interact in a lot of ways throughout this track. Somebody will play within a certain key or play a certain rhythm and another instrument will react to that and they're not afraid to totally interrupt and break this very intimate improvisational session apart with the opening chords of the closing on here, In The Court of The Crimson King track on here." 6:38 In The Court of The Crimson King - "If the song epitaph was like you know the death of a single person and was like the funeral for that person, this track is the apocalypse and musically and melodically I feel like this track is a lot like epitaph. In a way, it's kind of like the reprieve in this very theatrical prog rock masterpiece. It's really heavier than any other song on the album with these long slow drawn-out chorus vocals and the drums are going crazy. Just some of the best drum fills and progressive rock ever being laid out all over this track and the crescendos on this track get heavy heavy heavy as well especially when these harmonized guitar leads come in and I mean the album really ends as strong as it started."

My uncle died when I was 7, I don't remember a whole lot about him through my own memories. My family uses him as a cautionary tale to the rest of us, he joined that 27 club, tripped on acid for moths at a time, developed schizophrenia, stopped looking after himself and died in his sleep of pneumonia. What I do remember is laying on his bed with him while he explained to me the importance of music, telling me his favourite parts of Beatles, Doors, Pink Floyd and Deep purple songs as he played them and explaining how they communicated emotions and asking me how they made me feel. Every so often I'll play another band I remember him listening to, and sometimes they'll bring back some memories. This album, it made me cry, it inspired me so much I couldn't help but draw, and all I could think was somewhere, whether it's in my heart or in some distant dimension of the dead, my uncle George was smiling. Knowing that he helped me understand music in a deeper way.

The Jazz Session in the middle of 21st Century Schizoid Man is amazing.

This record deserves to be in The Greatest 500 Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone. I really do hate that mag...

I might overhype it, but in my opinion it should be in the best 20 albums ever released.

I bought this vinyl, then I showed it to my mom and she started crying from the nostalgia.

One of the greatest albums ever made.

I was 11 years old in '69, raised by somewhat socially conservative parents (good people, but concerned about appearances) my conception of music was the likes of Mitch Miller, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, and Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. To me, music was just background noise meant to break up the silence and keep one's mind off of depressing thoughts like the threat of nuclear war, Viet Nam, race riots, political assassinations, and the like. That year my parents gave me a portable transistor radio for Christmas; the first one I'd ever owned that could receive FM, and that night I played it in my darkened bedroom, tuning around the at bottom end of the FM dial where the college stations lurked. I stopped on one station just as one song was ending and the next one that came on was Court of the Crimson King. My innocent 11 year old crew-cut mind was blown! I had no idea! I had no idea that there was another entire world out there filled with depth and mystery and passion! It was as though I'd found a chest of treasure in some mossy, vine covered abandoned castle. I fell asleep that night really _listening_ to music, music that had something interesting to say, for the first time in my life. The next morning when I woke up, I discovered that somehow while I'd slept my hair had grown down to the middle of my back, and I had a craving to read Watts, and Kerouac, and Jung, and even Bukowski, although I wouldn't know who they were until years later. I went through a lot of batteries playing that little transistor radio night after night, exploring that newfound landscape, and it was King Crimson that kicked things off.

According to Fripp, Hendrix saw the original Crimson live and was just blown away, thought they were the greatest band he'd ever seen. Andy Summers of the Police, who at that time was dropping acid and playing psychedelia in Dantalian's Chariot on his way to a short stints in Soft Machine and a somewhat longer one in the New Animals, was from the same area as Fripp and had known him since they were teenagers playing the same hotel lounges. Andy's girlfriend (who later wrote a book called "Groupie") and Hendrix's girlfriend were quite close, so the two guitarists saw each other often, the last time being at a jam session in Los Angeles. Some 4 years after the break-up of the New Animals, when a broke Andy and his American wife had to sell his amp & borrow money from his dad for a ticket back to London, it was through Fripp, a famous name by that time, that he was able to find a well-paying job in Neil Sedaka's band where the original drummer of Crimson, Michael Giles, was also working, because the money was quite good. Since Summers had sold his amp, on nothing but Giles' recommendation, Sedaka fronted him 500 pounds to buy a replacement. Sedaka and Summers became friends during these tours. Later when Summers made it huge with the Police, he ran into Sedaka in NYC and invited his whole family backstage for the famous sold-out Shea Stadium concert.

King Crimson is not all that complicated. Epitaph sees 10 seconds into the future, which Diavolo can see for himself. If he wishes to, he can then activate King Crimson's erased time. During erased time, the future that Epitaph foresaw will take place and everything will play out as Epitaph forsaw. Only Diavolo can act consciously during this time. So while he cannot physically interact with anything and visa versa making him non-corporeal, he can move around on his own accord while everything else is bound by epitaph's predetermined fate. When erased time ends, no one will remember that period of time except Diavolo, hence the idea of it being "erased". However if Diavolo is touching something before he activates erased time, It will be treated as an extension of Diavolo until it becomes detached from him, such as his blood. There you go, that is how King Crimson works

I remember discovering these guys towards the end of the 2000s. They inmediately enthralled me. Never before has insanity been so precise, so clear, so cohesive. The lineup changes actually work for the band, album-by-album. Back to the album, it goes from volcanic jazz, to serene earthy ballads, to dramatic epics, to chilling celestial eeriness, to the bombasm of the final track. Holy shit!!!

My high school girlfriend's dad got her into King Crimson. I grabbed her headphones and listened. It was Larks Tongue In Aspic. I was never the same.

The rusted chains- In the court of the Crimson King. Me: Wait what happened to the rest of the song?

"If the song epitaph was like you know the death of a single person and was like the funeral for that person, this track is the apocalypse.." Which is probably why Alfonso Cuarón used "In The Court of The Crimson King" for his picture "Children Of Men." It's a perfect use of song in a motion picture.

This album was so ahead of it's time for 1969. Timeless.

Wandered through the woods drunk as hell alone one a full moon winter night with this album on my phones. Took 'Moonchild' to a completely new level. And of couse enjoyed the whole album was enhanced.

I discovered this album 20 years ago when I was 16, and it absolutely blew my mind! I had no idea that music could be this moving and fulfilling, it completely changed my perception of music. To this day I hold it as the absolutely most important album ever made, and hearing you describe it so colorful and loving almost made me cry. Intensely awesome musical journey ❤

Great fucking album

Epitaph is my second all time favorite song. I agree with everything you said about it. It's so amazing, dark and hunting. Very few songs come close to capturing the emotional feel Epitaph does. "But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying! Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying. Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying… Crying… Crying…" I get goosebumps just thinking about it. Phenomenal, world-class piece of music. And the lyrics are out of this world.

The best album ever made. This was 1969, I remember buying the record, it was so far ahead of its time. It took you to places most bands didn't know existed and those that did could not express it like this band.

I loved this album because I think the sad and funeral-like theme is inspired by the artists lives, and I can relate to the lyrics of Epitaph. "Confusion, will be my epitaph..." this line struck me, I tend to overthink things and always come to the conclusion "oh man, life is confusion, nothing more nothing less"

I just started listening to this album today and I instantly recognized the hook from the first song that was sampled by kanye West on his MBDTF. After finishing the the LP I flip it and replay it from the start and I did it agn and agn and now I think I am in love with it.

How about a review of an old Genesis Album like Tresspass, Foxtrot or Nursery Cryme?

this is one of the best albums of all time, and is so brilliantly dramatic and indulgent. It made perfect sense when 21st century schizoid man was sampled on my beautiful dark twisted fantasy - the two have much more in common than you would first think! Oh, and the fact that Robert Christgau called this 'ersatz shit' proves he's really not got much idea what he's talking about when it comes to music

I loved the instrumental part of Moonchild when I was in LSD, it was great, specially when ITCOTCK came from nothing

Best album of all time. There’s no changing my mind. First time I ever listened to it maybe 3-4 years ago, I just sat there and tried to comprehend what I had just heard for like an hour and a half.

I absolutely love this album, this band, this genre and this period in music. The only thing I don't like, or rather should I say, could be improved about it is the improvisation on "Moonchild", called "The Illusion". I would have removed that to have a perfect 10 album. But then again, if you get rid of the improvisation you also get rid of King Crimson's "essence". They improvised. A lot. That's what they do. In the end I'd probably just leave it there. Listen to it at least once. Then skip it on following listens...

I love hearing about albums like this. Especially considering it's so highly acclaimed and recommended by the entire comment section. But it also fills in some small Easter eggs I never knew about. Had no idea Kanye sampled king crimson in power but now that it makes sense I can never hear it the same, in a good way!

Red is a better album I just can't get over how perfect Starless is

Remember hearing this LP in 1971 Playing Pool with a buddy and played it over and over. Still have my copy but very beat up. Saw Ringo years ago and Greg Lake was in the Band and after the opening number they went into "Court of the Crimson King"! The Crowd freaked out!

Greg Lakes bass line on 21st Century Schizoid Man is insane

The improvisational part of this album is definitely my favorite so far. It reminds me of a jazz band, and I love jazz. Love that aspect of this album. Gives me butterflies.

Interesting review! I bought this album when it was first released and listened to it many, many times. What a mind journey! The lyrics and music carried me away. For me this LP is in the top five LPs of all time. I had two tickets ($7 each) to see King Crimson's concert in Chicago in 1971, but my date couldn't make it. I wanted to be with her and sold my tickets to strangers. Months later she was no longer my girlfriend and I regretted not going to the concert.

One of my absolute favourite albums. Groundbreaking - still in 2007, when I first heard it.

I absolutely love this album, and 21st century Schizoid Man is easily one of my all time favourite songs now The insane guitar, saxophone, drums (Michael Giles goes insane on them, holy damn they're good to listen to) works so goddamn well to create an intense, psychedelic experience

I remember the first time I heard this album I was 15. I was at Taz records (Used record store in Halifax Nova Scotia) and it was playing over the stereo system there. I asked what it was and then went to look through the albums to find it. The artwork just popped out and grabbed me and I thought ok cool. I took it home put it on the old record player we had, plugged in the old 1/4' headphones and let it spin. Right from the first 30 second of 21st century schizoid man I was hooked. To this day it remains one of my all time favorites.
