My first rifle was a .243 and I’ve killed everything from rabbits and fox to deer and 300 pound hogs with it. And I now use a 22-250 and I’ve killed just as much. The only people I know that say they arnt big enough for deer are people who cannot shoot accurately enough to kill anything.

Most of my hunting buddies tell me I should graduate to a larger caliber. They all use larger calibers like 30.06 and 7mm Mag, and call mine a pea-shooter. I sport a Weatherby .243 with Bausch & Lomb scope. It's the darnedest thing that they are always having to track their deer. Shoot mine right between the eyes every time and drop them right there on the spot.

I’ve killed many deer with both. They both work fine. I prefer a neck shot with the 22-250 but the .243 for some reason goes straight through without a tendency to actually break the neck almost as if you’re shooting FMJ’s or something. Cartridge I use now is actually 22-243. Sweetest gun I have.

For many years I utilized a varmint weight Ruger #1 in .22-250 for coyotes. Then as I got older, hunting calling solo, primarily @ night; traveling frequently from location to location I desired both a rifle and a shotgun. With all the loading and unloading each night I chose an H&R 12 gauge single shot and an H&R lightweight synthetic youth model shot .243 Win. . This way I can carry both to my stands. Then my g/f can use the .243 in deer season too. Its zeroed @ 75 yards.

Its always awesome to see how the clay deforms with different rounds. Its one thing to see what they do to animals/humans/ballistics gel - but the clay really paints a great picture for the pressure and force it imparts upon the target plus the density allows the rounds to work pretty good even if full expansion isnt achieved

I actually use the 55 grain Hornady V-max in my 22-250, and it is my understanding that this (being a varmint round) is designed to splinter or shatter on impact, rather than just mushroom and pass right through the animal. I'm certainly no expert, but it is my understanding that they are specifically designed this way to create massive damage inside the game, without damaging the pelt with a huge exit wound. That leaves you with just a "pin hole" entry wound if you are hunting an animal for its pelt... such as a coyote. This is the first time I've ever seen such a clear demonstration of how effective that design actually is-the block of clay illustrates it perfectly. Thank you.

Fun video! Yup, I've shot both deer and prairie dogs with a .243 as well as both deer and prairie dogs with a 22-250. The bullets you used weren't apples to apples because they were each designed with specific performance goals. I'm sure you know that, though. I prefer the 22-250 for rock chucks and prairie dogs over the 243. I prefer the .243 for deer. Heavier bullets for the deer are a good thing. But, in the end, I'd do it with either one for shooting either one, as long as I had the proper bullet for each purpose.

Ive only seen him miss once. That was when a doe was about 10 yards from the stand and constantly snorting at us. He missed the first shot. It ran off and came back around behind us 20 minutes later about the same distance and non stop snorted again. The stand was built on old telephone poles so we were way up, but he took another shot and missed again. This time the doe never even ran so he finally just got mad at that old doe and threw a beer at her before she ran off. But i was always impressed with that 22-250. He used it for coyotes, turkey, everything. Never had a problem with it.

I’ve had both rifles and still have a 22-250 that I use exclusively for Cyotes and it has done a spectacular job and has for years. The .243 worked equally as well on Cyotes, I just preferred the 250 because of a little less recoil.

The smallest rifle I've personally shot a deer with was my 25-06 but I've quite a few friends who've successfully used the. 223/5.56. The 22-250 got a lot more boiler room than a .223. It should do pretty well IMHO.

It is an amazing round and it good enough for me even the largest whitetail deer. I have killed several pigs here in south Texas with my 22-250 and I have over twenty boxes of the Nosler Partitions in my safe in reserve. It makes the 22-250 easily outclass the .243 due to its’ speed and accuracy. If it were the only gun I had and a record book elk was within 200 or so yards I would not hesitate to use it on a high neck shot or to shoot for a double lung!!!!!

Good job. Your clay blocks really show good drama. Remember the .243 is a necked down .308. The .308 is the M14 caliber. Which I carried and loved. .The .243 is a little lite for the mule deer here in Colorado. However the .243 will do the job. Very good demo.

Use my .243 with IMR 4350 & 75 gr VMax's on woodchucks. I let them live another day if less than 100 yrds. Anything else becomes "ground chuck" if I do my part. Handloading really brings out the "fantastic" of this cartridge.

Where I live the question of which to use for deer hunting is answered by the wildlife department. The smallest diameter bullet we can use for big game hunting is .24 cal. which is a shame because every 22-250 I have ever seen can shoot the eyes out of the deer at distance.

@davidcuriel4519
@davidcuriel4519 3 года назад
Just out of curiosity and I am not criticizing your comment...... How many elk have you shot and killed with the .243? And how many elk never got away that you did shoot? I have a .243 but I would be hesitant to use that caliber for elk or even deer in that part of the country where elk primarily live....the west and the far north. The animals are just so much bigger and stronger out there. Even with proper shot placement, a well made 100 grain 6mm caliber bullet like a nosler partition bullet is not going to be as effective as say a good 140 to 160 grain bullet in 7mm, like the 7mm-08 or the 7mm Remington magnum. I have used my 7mm Remington magnum on elk, mule deer, texas whitetail, texas exotics, and big feral hogs. No animals have ever gotten away. Unfortunately I have lost some texas whitetail deer and some feral hogs when I used my .243 that I shot at ranges beyond 200 yards. The .243 is a great varmint round at long ranges. It is also a great deer round at medium ranges in my opinion. But I personally would never shoot an elk with a .243, but that is just me. The shot placement would have to be near perfect every time in order for the animal to not get away and/or suffer before expiring.

I had a Savage 22-250 that I used for varmint hunting and I use to reload my own ammo, and I just loved how accurate my shooting with doing my own reloading. I used Horndy 50 and 55 gr bullets with Varget powder and got to the point where I could tape tunies to my targets and at 300 yards I could knock out the center out of the to tunes. Did the same with my 223, got pictures to prove it. Use to take golf balls and paint them orange, drill holes in them and put string in them and hang them at 200 yards and let them swing and knock them off. Just loved my 22-250 and the 223.
