My guess; he’s aware that, like Top Gun, “Maverick” is a thinly veiled recruitment film subsidized by the Department of Defense to sell the romanticized, jingoistic love affair with war and weaponry that keeps our economy humming and our boys & girls online for the military wood chipper and/or stockpiled for our shoot-first, rationalize second cop factories, our suicide hotlines and PTSD Clinics. Go see All Quiet on The Western Front if you need a bang up war movie that delivers truth.

The Batman did feel derivative of both Se7en and Zodiac, albeit with the camera tech to refine the bleach-bypass look even further. It's not to the level of Joker's "What if Martin Scorsese but comic books?", but definitely sitting in the shadow of another body of work. I really enjoyed it, and I think it looked great (the few times it pushed CGI spectacle a little too far aside), but I'm hugely surprised it might get overlooked in favour of more original films.

Respectfully disagree with your choices of Glass Onion and Babylon being some of the best films of 2022. Glass Onion had a predictable plot and had a ridiculous end result. Characters were poorly written and had no personality even if they were portrayed as rich idiots. Babylon is a realistic take on how modern Hollywood has gone downhill in recent years

How in the WORLD is 'Top Gun: Maverick' (the highest grossing film of 2022) not on this list but 'Pinocchio' makes the cut? I've literally not seen a single bad review of this movie. All the movies on this list (of the ones I've seen) are all solid choices, but Maverick should have definately been on this list.

Pearl is one of the best horror films the year and one of the two films Scorsese listed as his favorites of the year (the other being Tar). When Ti West shot X and the cast/crew became stuck in lockdown on location, they thought "why not make another movie since we're all stuck here anyways?" So they wrote and shot Pearl on the spot. Great filmmaking spirit and the result, a fun horror with the style of the Hollywood Golden Age, was even better than the film they went there to shoot in the first place.

I think that movie does a good job distracting people away from the fact it's just a generic, basic mystery setup and the entire last half is just a long explanation of things we couldn't have known including faked shots. It cheats all the clever things that go into great mysteries and twists in an attempt to appear smarter than it is.

I need to get on Letterboxd as I don't remember all the movies I watched, but one of my favs was Catherine, Called Birdy. Very well done coming of age film set in the middle ages and feeling both ancient and modern at the same time.

Ayo did you say your favorite Damien Chazelle since *Whiplash*? I respect the favorite part but my personal preference is La La Land. I balled my eyes out at the end and I'm still captivated by the composition of Justin Hurwitz. Babylon is of course one of my favorites and can kind of see the polar divide of opinion (but not really). Great list! Going to check everything on the list everywhere... All at once (one monitor at a time on my massive Multimonitor display I built for watching mass amounts of film at a time lol)

From the list in the description, I've seen "Hustle". The Sandman gives an amazing, serious performance, which I love to see, especially knowing him as a comedic actor. The basketball stars did surprising well when it comes to acting, not oscar worthy but for someone who dribbles a ball for a living, it was pretty solid. Storywise, it's a very classic feel-good sports movie about motivation, family struggles, and trying to live the dream. I didn't expect to love this film as much as I did. I've seen it a few times now and it still hits the same. Highly recommend it.

Not necessarily in the 22 best -- but an honorable mention -- check "Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris". A film totally out of place in anything that could have or should have been released to theaters in 2022 or even this century. Total Capra-corn, and if it had been by a lesser cast and crew (and even lower budget than it had) would have been a Hallmark movie -- but the acting, script adaptation, score, cinematography and just overall production was just a perfect little package.

Ryan's favourites never disappoint. I just came back from watching Cha Cha real smooth and idk, I haven't felt like that in years. I'm just in love with Cooper Raif and his ability to drive the narrative of the movie. His acting was genuine and heartfelt. I'd love to see what he has next but I know he's gonna focus on one thing sooner or later bc of the stress and productions getting bigger with his advancement. Thanks just thanks for staying Film Riot. I wish channels like Indy Mogul did survive but I had a great time.

I agree with the vast majority of your list here - well, the ones I've seen so far, anyway (which is most of them)! But - where's "The Batman"...?? No "Amsterdam"?? Not even "Top Gun: Maverick"...?? I was little shocked by those omissions, to be honest!

tbh I think every single film you listed is generic holywood trash with the exception of Amsterdam since I havent watched it. There's not even a good performance, story, set, cinematography etc. So I am a little shocked that a few people keep wondering why they were left of a list of genuinely good movies. Any of those elements listed if not multiple combined were in every movie listed in this video. Like seriously Batman.. That was absolute crap.

@@yeahna Well that's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. We don't have to agree with each other - the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same thing!! But being a long time fan of the original comics, this version of The Batman was the CLOSEST and most faithful version of those original comics put to celluloid to date. And if you despise Hollywood films so much, why watch them?? But then, that's even more reason for you to watch "Amsterdam" as it's a masterpiece in film making and acting, and is as far from a stereotypical blockbuster as you could ask for - but with a stellar Hollywood cast! Believe me, it's more than worth a view...

@@TrigFX nah I don't hate Hollywood films just generic trash from Hollywood which is a lot but not all. I guess I never look at it from a original comic book perspective. I almost feel like batman has been done great multiple times already just feels like we're in an era of no creativity and regurgitating crap and rebooting everything so I do get rather disappointed at "Hollywood" I will suss Amsterdam it looks pretty good. I was more just sharing my opinion which sometimes I feel strongly in hahahaha dunno how they came across to you but no hate to ya ❤️
