In this video we compare the 22 long rifle caliber with the 25 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol). The goal is to see if there is any significant difference in velocity and energy when shooting the 22lr or the 25acp out of a small barreled pocket pistol. Shooting some 22lr CCI Stingers, Norma USA Tac-22 and some 25 auto Remington UMC and an old box of Federal 50 grain.

OK, I got to sit down and watch this, and enjoyed it. I was shocked by how consistent each of the .22LR cartridges were, considering how .22LR is produced. Very impressive. I love to shoot .22LR, but as a carry round I'd still fall back on the centerfire .25ACP. I carried a .25 auto as a backup weapon until my agency "outlawed" it for whatever bureaucratic nonsensical reason the boss came up with. It was a very good gun and I had to let it go in a trade for a "legal" .38 Chief Special. Thanks for the comparison, and I liked the app on your phone.

Thanks Frank! I really enjoyed shooting the 25acp. Just wish the ammo was more available. So far I’ve had to purchase all of mine online.

I have to watch this later, but you're breaking my heart. These look like two fun guns and calibers to compare. Can't wait to get home and watch this.

Classic match up. The downsides of the 22 is 1st & foremost is Reliability of rimfire primers, then less bullet weight & a smaller diameter bullet. The upside with the 22 is less cost of ammo + its more available & more guns available for it. The 25 ACP is no powerhouse by any means but 750-800fps with a 50 gr bullet is better than near 1000 fps or so with the very best 29-32gr 22 cal bullets. If the 22 cal bullet begins to expand it will penetrate even less & this is actually worse as neither caliber is noted for deep penetration.

Well said Frank. Each have their benefits. Personally I have shied away from 22lr for self defense over the last couple of decades. Too many experiences with misfires, as compared to a centerfire. That may be changing now with newer production of 22lr self-defense ammo. But every old round of 25acp I have put scraped up and put through this pistol has fired without issue. I’d carry it with confidence.

The “power” difference between the two is insignificant. I carried the .25 b/c a center fire cartridge is more reliable than a .22 rim fire.

Awesome comparison. I don't have a 25 auto, but wouldn't mind having a little mouse gun like that. I do have a couple of 32 Auto and some little 380's I wonder if it'd be worth comparing these two rounds in the little small pocket pistols.

That would make a great video. Call it the mouse gun showdown! 😄 Pull out the chrono and see how they compare.
@Valorius

There is really no comparison. 380s utterly dominate the pocket pistol market for a reason. Probably 95+% of all pocketpistols sold are in 380.

Great video, man. Try buffalo bore for the .25 ACP. 60 gr hard cast, boasting 850 fps, and 96 or 98 fpe out of these pocket pistols.

What you failed to measure is the 35gr hollow point ammo for .25acp, which typically runs around 900+/- fps out of the short barrel...much like the stingers are considerably faster than the norma ammo you used, the lighter .25acp is near equally faster, although in both calibers at the expense of bullet weight...furthermore, most folks tend to agree in both calibers that penetration is the only game in town, as bullet expansion unlikely at the lower velocities...running regular ball ammo both calibers come close, and sometimes meet the 'FBI' gel test minimum standard (I think too many people put way too much into the gel test standard, but it does give a repeatable measure)...we have carried both calibers, the .22 always in a revolver, which mitigates the reliability issue somewhat...these are not 'gunfighting' calibers, but do work within reason for 'get off me' scenarios...we are seniors, and the smaller, lighter guns of these calibers are a blessing, plus the very low recoil which aids in fast, accurate shooting under duress...so, the .25 Jetfire our current EDC, loaded with any brand okay FMJ, and we don't look for trouble (preamble of rule #1, have a gun, is avoid trouble in the first place)...carry on...
@texmexshoots
@texmexshoots 10 месяцев назад
Well said John. I also agree that using 22lr in a revolver mitigates the reliability issue. Still trust my NAA 22mag. I need to get my hands on some hotter self-defense hollow point 25acp and try this test again.
@JohnPublic-dk7zd
@JohnPublic-dk7zd 10 месяцев назад
@@texmexshoots we love our NAA, chambered .22lr, but it is very rarely carried (cci velocitors loaded)...the .25 SD ammo most likely to be found is the Hornady, we have a box, and in 10 years we'll probably have the same box...I'm pretty sold on fmj for the Jetfire, but then if I need to break out the .45 I'm running fmj out of it, too...perhaps WE put too much emphasis on simple and reliable, that's on us...hmm, kinda like the double barrel we keep loaded, same kind of thinking...

Very very intriguing, especially since you were pushing 1000 with Stingers. I wonder if Federal Punch would do any better, especially since a lot of criticism for Stingers is that they are best only for long barrels and rifles.

Thanks for watching Mike!! I've had many people sing the praises of Stingers through their pistols. Like all 22's, it's always best to test the ammunition you want to use.

Power wise they are about equal when you consider the weight of the bullet. BUT .25 acp hardball FMJ Penetrates hard barriers better than the 22 long rifle in every test I've seen which means it's better for headshots penetrating the skull along with being more reliable
@texmexshoots

Thanks for the info. I expect a good amount of that effect could be due to the 25 using a copper jacketed round vs the typical 22lr that is basically just lead with occasionally a "copper wash". Once that lead warms up, it flattens the moment it hits anything remotely hard.

Hello from Lubbock Texas. I carry a PT-25 Taurus and its a sweet shooting pistol. I may get a HP25 by Phoenix Arms. The PT25 has 2nd strike capability. I was using PMC Bronze 50gr. ammo. I pulled the trigger and nothing, i pulled the trigger again and Boom!. I know you cant do that with rimfire. Ill carry a 25 and 380 all day long.

SAD 😢 Beretta discontinued not only their jet fire 25 but their bobcat 25 also.. I really like the 25 and have a very soft spot for it.. I actually think it's a great round for someone who has problems with recoil but wants a small lightweight reliable pistol to carry daily.. not only someone who has problems with recoil but someone who has problems retracting the slide the Tip-Up barrel makes this a breeze loading and checking the chamber... 25 not being the hammer of Thor but better than their hands for someone who wants a tiny pistol but who is sensitive recoil
@texmexshoots

Hey there Glenmo1. Thanks for watching! I didn't realize they discontinued the Bobcat in 25acp. That is a shame. I agree that the tip-up barrel is a great addition that Beretta uses on some of their smaller pistols and even some of the 80's series.

I get 1130fps avg velocity from 40gr interceptor out of my 4" Sig. Is there a .25 acp round that will match that? .25 has a theoretical advantage cause it's center fire and semi rimmed vs the rimmed rimfire .22LR, but i don't think you can get anything as hot as the hottest 22LR stuff in .25. And no one makes a gun anything like a Sig P322 or any of the really good 22LR high capacity pistols on the market today. I plink fallen tree leaves in the lake behind my house at 150+ yds with my 322 (I have uploaded the videos to prove it). If a person is going pocket pistol, in 2023 it would really be insane to select anything other than a Ruger LCP Max. Thirteen rounds of 380 in a gun that weighs 15oz fully loaded, and comes with excellent factory night sights. If recoil is an issue, a soft shooting flat nose target round like .380 Winchester white box is still in a whole different realm than anything you can get in .25 auto.
@texmexshoots
@texmexshoots 10 месяцев назад
I’ve seen what you can do with that 322! I’m convinced you could shoot the ticks off a hog. 👍 I think the smaller action on the 21a may make it more finicky with its ammo selection. You are also right to point out that the LCP Max is the ultimate pocket pistol, having a higher capacity and getting the better performance of the 380 over the 25 and 32. Hope you are enjoying your weekend!
