If you in Texas that should be no problem. I had gotten them when ammo was hard to find not realizing that they would not fit my regular long rifle gun, of course one got stuck lol. I live and learn. However, I have the Taurus 22 mag and it should work real well at the range. I will carry it as a defense gun some days like I carry my Taurus 605. Neat little gun.
Take a look at North American Arms, they have plenty of 22's long rifle and magnum. I've owned one for 20 years and it is great. Take a look at the NAA-22M-R250, its a 5 shot break top and has a 2'5 inch barrel. NAA builds quality firearms and they are guaranteed for life which says a lot about quality.
I expected a lot more folks to comment, a 22 for self defense, you might as well carry a stick. I am glad to see more people are open minded, and more and more gun and ammo manufacturers are thinking about those calibers. My wife's EDC is a 22LR and my ranch carry is a 22WMR revolver. Keep up the good work.
@@madride858585 A 22lr will punch through a lot more than a lot of people realize. 22WMR obviously even more. A well placed shot with a 22 will be much more effective than a missed shot with a 9mm.
@@benweatherstaff3157 also a better choice for those that may believe in guns for SD, really have no desire to shoot or practice with the weapon. Granted, if you're going to own a gun you need to practice, but that doesn't mean most people will practice enough. Remember my first gun a 22.. then my second gun was a SKS.. that was a completely different experience.
have you seen that kel-tac pistol that holds 30 in the mag ?, + 2 on person , 90 rounds , yea i'd love to have it for protection , do they make wadcutter's for .22's ? , thanks > tom !
this is an excellent caliber for us old-timers that can't handle recoil anymore. Great video, Sir. I think I would go with a 3inch barrel lenght revolver to avoid malfunctions and having to clear the weapon in an emergency, at least a 9 or 10-shot revolver would be just fine, plenty of firepower to ward off any two-legged varmint!
Toby , does that 3" ruger have a 9-10 cylinder? If so that would be great for my wife. I like the Walther, but I am an old timer that still uses a 1911.
I have a 22mag revolver that holds 9. I also carry 2 speed loaders. Those rounds come screaming out of the 4in barrel. I found the federal punch round to work well. Some brass casings seize and are difficult to eject.
I routinely carry .22 Magnum handguns, including a S&W 351C, NAA Mini Revolver with 1 5/8" barrel, and my favorite, a High Standard Derringer from 1970. The Smith is easily accurate enough to be a first rate kit gun and shoots right to the sights. I load all of them with the Speer Gold Dot round. Highest velocity is in the High Standard with it's 3 1/2" barrels. Some loads are running over 1,300 fps in it.
Great video. Concise and to the point. Very informative. This ammo brings the 22WMR to a new level as far as self defense and every day carry options. At scumbag range I don't think you would be too underpowered to the point where it would be of concern. That Walther is huge though.
I have heritage arms 22wmr that also comes with 22lr cylinder.I only own revolvers, and i love the heritage.Very economical gun with 4.5 inch barrel. Thanks for giving the wmr some love.
My usual carry piece is a S&W Airlite 22 mag, a comfortable fit for inside the belt item, so much so it's easy to forget it's in there. After seeing this I'll be picking up some federal punch ammo. Thanks for the demo,
@@madride858585 if you haven't, you should check out the Lucky Gunner channel's series on 'mouse guns'. The older (extremely experienced) man they have speak about the whole (hole) issue speaks to your knee jerk reactions in this thread.
I actually like the thought of the bullet staying in the bad person and not hitting anyone else. Those shorter shots still caused pretty good wound channel.
You wouldn't want 3 shots in the gut, that's for sure!! That's the first thing I thought when I saw the first 2 shots: "that's a belly gun right there. Give the bad guy 3 new belly buttons!"
Do keep in mind you are going to lose at least a tiny bit of speed and penetration when you aren't at point blank and a bit more going through clothing. On the other hand going through clothing should cause expansion to start sooner.
Thanks for the video. I just shot my new PMR30 two days ago and lt's a lot of fun. I used various CCi 40gr rounds. I'll be trying out some punch when I can catch it in stock online.
My bug to my G43 is a .22mag NAA Mini Mag in a pocket holster. I actually shoot that little sucker surprisingly well. It might not knock over the 6" plates on the plate rack at 10 yards but I still hit them every time. Not shabby for a gun with no rear sight.
I just bought a couple North American Arms 22WMR revolvers with the foldable grip holster and I love them. They are great for a back-up CCW or just to throw in the glovebox.
Great test ! I have the Punch LR and I like the ammo , I use a 4” barrel revolver! As of yet I have not found the WMR version !! Your test answered a lot of questions ! Well done !!
ftr, Paul Harrel's test of the .22 LR Punch didn't show that it was any better than a couple of other long standing hi velocity .22's. Surely not enough to justify the extra cost. Not saying it's 'bad'. Just not that much better than other options that are a bit cheaper.
@@xiongfa2152 Paul didn't shoot it into ballistics gel where this round shows how much better it is than all the other 22lr ammo either, not knocking paul but in gel it really is impressive
Wow!! That is very impressive! I know have to see how this ammo compared to the Speer gold dots and the Hornady Critical defense. But love the new options for defensive 22 mag as I am a huge fan of the NAA black widow as just a fun gun, but sometimes to slip in the pocket when doing gardening, getting the mail, walking the dog.
I've been using the 40gr golddot short barrel defense even in my rifles for a long time and on small game is my favorite 22 mag ammo. I'm really curious to see a side by side comparison of the two.
For decades now I've been taking win. 40 gr 22 wmr hollow points and filing down that exposed lead down to copper jacket giving it a near full wadcutter effect works great out of my single six ruger
Just bought a Heritage Barkeep with 2.7" barrel and these look like a pretty good option for that. The expansion doesn't make for a much bigger projectile but better than nothing!
That was great performance, I never expected to see that kind of expansion on a .22mag round, especially through such short barreled guns. Now I'll feel better about those who choose to use a .22mag pistol for self-defense; I never thought it was up to the job, but this is a real game-changer. Thanks for another incredible video!
I have always overlooked the .22 magnum. But, after shooting it in the excellent S&W 351PD I have changed my perspective. In light revolvers it’s easy to carry, and in the 351, accurate and fun. It’s a shame that I don’t see many of the.22 mag j-frame sized revolvers in stores. You kinda have to hunt for them. It’s a good option that many people don’t know about.
im glad gun makers are realizing there is a big market for the 22 magnum. Some of us want a very light recoil but still is able to take out a charging wild boar. in a camping/survival situation, you can have a pistol and a powerful hunting rifle with the same bullet. If you only could pick one caliper to use the rest of your life - 22 Magnum would be the best choice, just for its multiple uses.
Awesome video, I just recently got a Heritage rough rider, I'm gonna buy the 22 wmr cylinder and add it to my carry rotation, there's just something special about shooting a single action cowboy gun!
Since you have now become the 22WMR channel 😜, would you consider doing a comparison video between the Punch ammo and say, the much cheaper, 30 grain varmint ammo at 2200 fps. I'd like to see how it does with shorter barrel lengths. If you don't want to do it, but are aware of tests that are already out here, please direct me to those. Love all your videos. Lots of fun to watch.
for what exactly?? in response to this video? want a 6" or 9" for ccw??? 🤣 just to throw a .22 at someone? grab a rock off the ground and throw it. more power. by alot🤣
Thanks for sharing. I currently use Speer Gold Dot Short barrel out of a 4 inch barrel. This may be another option. Love to a comparison video one day. Again thanks for sharing.
I like you tested with different barrel lengths. I'll be using my 6 1/2 inch Rough Rider - one cylinder 22 Mag, the other cylinder 22LR Punch. Thanks for your testing.
@@joelkeller5993 works well in my pmr30 but from what I understand all of these pistols are a little different as far as what they like. I have 2 of them but I've only tried the punch in my newer one. The pmr 30 dosen't seem to be as bad as the internet would have you believe.
I'm retired law enforcement and have carried PMR30 as well as a 9mm Sig. The PMR30 is a nice lightweight pistol which has a composite body which is nice in the Florida humidity...it doesn't rust when carried inside the waistband. And with 30 rounds I feel very confident with it.
Great tests ! I started with the Federal Punch 3 years ago in .22 LR , so far I like the round and have been comparing it to CCI Stinger and CCI Velocitor! Not the Federal Punch in .22 WMR just yet !
Super video, excellent setup with the ballistic gel /water bottle backup and of course, the high speed cameras. Always liked the idea of the 22mag's extra power, reduced recoil...My preference would be from a 3" or longer barrel. Thanks!! Tim
@@mattfranks4086 I used to have trouble dropping 8 pound jackrabbits with a .22LR rifle with standard old hollow point LR. Found out kind of by accident a CCI Stinger in a Ruger .22 Mark worked much better. I'd tell the story but it gets kind of long. Any rate it was Stingers for me since and that was good 45 years ago.
Got a Walther WMP 2 weeks ago . I'm impressed ! I do custom holsters and belts in leather and have my parts cut out for the holster and low slung belt . Tomorrow I'm gonna start tooling the leather . Going to do a Tombstone theme on the belt with a big Daisy on the holster !
That gun (if its reliable) with this ammo would absolutely suck to get shot at with. looks like an acceptable ammount of damage, and an experienced shooter should be able to put a whole bunch of holes in something, really quickly. I don't think trying to get a ton of energy per round on target is the way to go for defense... a reasonable ammount of damage out of a super controllable platform, and training to keep shooting till the threat stops is the way to go for handguns.
Thanks for the test, I am pleased that I use two of the guns you used for EDC depending on my wardrobe Usually they are my back-ups not my principle EDC.
22 mag is cool, I've always wanted a gun in that caliber. This video taught me so much. Is there a video where you show 22lr hollowpoint in ballistic gelatin?
Thanks for the review and tests. I am looking for a LR / WMR convertible revolver and this ammo looks better all the time, in both cartridges. Assuming the barrel likes them both.
I work for a FFL, get a heritage rough rider for under 200$ (most) come with a .22Lr AND a .22 WMR cylinder. They didn’t even pay me to say this lol. They’re just cool guns to plunk with and cheap
I purchased the limit of (6) boxes, for my Daughter's 22 Compact, and loaded the magazine for a trial! The first shot was perfect, until attempting to eject, then we hit a snag! We did this 15-20 times, before simply placing it back in the box, and reloading with the CCI that I previously had her using. I'm hopeful that the issue is simply a "glitch" on my end, and not something larger?
That is pretty amazing! In fact it reminds me of the old tbbc ! Trophy bonded bear claw. It had a monolithic solid base with deep narrow hollow cavity pre programmed to make cutting petals with a progressively thinning side wall at the ogive area , bonded core, hollow point . Normally profiled as a spire point flat base, with a few roundnose exceptions , 7-30 waters ,.30-30,.32win spcl.and .375 for 38-55win... And made for .224 up to .500. It was known almost revered for reliable expansion, deep penetration and high weight retention. It was in the class of the A- frame, x bullet and tsx, accubond, a-squared, woodleigh weldcore, ect. Does that sound like this bullet to you, after handling? It looks the part from what I see in the video. That Walther is sweet.
There had been some controversy regarding the cutting pedal effect. Some politicians said that it was deadlier but the object behind defense is to stop Mr. Bad-guy from doing bad things. This is especially important when he's strung out on PCP or is extremely angry. Keep in mind that I *don't* have any medical qualifications but would imagine that a larger blood pressure drop from more bleeding would incapacitate someone pretty quick.
I have a Ruger Single Six and it has a 6.5 inch barrel . I like the CCI Maxi Mag better than the Federal Punch , Maxi Mag has a 30 grain jacketed hollow point +v 2200 fps (varmint round ) . We have a ground hog problem and I use these to solve it . At 30 yards they make a small hole going in and a thumb size hole coming out . As a self defence round I think they would work very well . Mags seem to work better in longer barrels . .
For a bullet that is meant to burn up the majority of its powder in a snubose 2inch barrel. I feel like there are limiting returns when shot out of an 16inch rifle. Will it do better? Yes, but it all depends on how long it takes to burn off all the powder effectively limiting the pressure.
Out of a rifle I think that you could expect to see the bullet fail. Because of the bullets construction and the increase in velocity the bullet will probably come apart to quickly and have a lot less penetration. Just MHO.
@@kalin6149 22wmr is more of a rifle round. 9mm is what you described. With 22mag you see great speed gains with length of barrel. 16 to 18" is best. I don't know why you said that but 22wmr and 177hmr are both rifle rounds.
@@jefferp For turkey hunting it is illegal most places I've been. I don't know why, maybe their Game and Fish guys haven't tried it. Or they consider it just another rimfire. It sure works.
@@jefferp My home State allows centerfire rifle( 735 ft/lbs at the muzzle and up) , .357, .41,.44 magnum pistols, bows, crossbows, shotguns, and muzzleloading rifles .45 and bigger for both Spring and Fall Turkey seasons. But not .22 WMR, only 330 ft/lbs muzzle energy.
Glad you can find 22 magnum. It’s almost unheard of where I live. Interesting video. I have a 22 magnum rifle and I am lucky to find ammunition. So I don’t shoot it much.
I would like to see a test of this ammunition in a rifle. I use my 22 magnum Marlin rifle for garden pest control and this looks like ammunition that would work well on groundhogs.
Well now this was a interesting video and I think that the 22 magnum is a good solid round especially with the introduction of the punch 22 magnum, but it's it is still a rimfire and I have always been Leary of using a rimfire to protect my life or others. I could see it as a hideaway or backup gun.
Range time and your own types of testing will absolve any issues you think the cartridge may have. I've had more feed failures with .380HP ammo then I have with any other cartridge I've owned.
@@j.rob.5943 I'm not arguing with you, I've never owned one in a pistol but if I could run 500-1000 rounds through one I'd have a decent idea on just how much I would trust it vs trusting word of mouth. My lcp2 is unreliable with DRT frangibles. First round chambered is literally 50/50 failure to feed. Never had a single hiicup with ball ammo though.
Superb video with the various firearms. A big fan of the WMR. Two boxes of the Punch arrived this afternoon. I also like the Federal Game Shok 50 grain bullets. All the best!!
In a PMR-30, this might be a fairly adequate personal-protection round given the 30rd magazine... 👍🏻 *EDIT - can you do a chronograph on those out of the Walther ?
@LabRat Knatz I used to carry a NINE SHOT .22 Magnum revolver and a box of bullets when rambling in the mountains. It was always ready to fire out an "SOS" if I broke an ankle. Less than nine will not do that.............................elsullo
@Mr. Plinkster I believe the Rugers that you were shooting, was the LCRX models with the exposed hammer. The LCR has a internal hammer thus you can only shoot it double action.
I know Kel-tecs don't have the reputation for quality control of Walthers, but I would like to see what the PMR-30 would do with this ammo. Nice video!
I tried 3 different ammo in my Hi-Standard Derringer (3.5"). The Hornady Crit. Def has a 45gr bullet, like the punch. Velocity was 1085 fps. Did not test expansion. The Punch proves it will expand. Thank you.
Nope the punch proves the punch expends it might give you an idea of what the other ones will do but do you really want to stake anything important on that.
My preferred concealed carry weapon is a stolen pizza hut salt shaker. At close range 5 to 7 feet it can be extremely accurate and can be carried almost anywhere..lol have a great day and keep looking for that better tomorrow
He does advocate the use of a pump shotgun…. So that’s good… Just rack it and discharge it straight up in the air… that’ll do it, no shot out lungs! Lol Let’s go Brandon!
I can start carrying my pmr-30. I carry a full-size frame now, so that wouldn’t be an issue. I use a OWB holster w/extra mag. 61 rounds and at half the weight! Yes, mine is one that doesn’t have feed issues.
