Okay, I had started wondering about this after binging your channel lately. I love your videos and they have been super helpful. I was wondering, do you have ADHD??? I only ask because I am ADHD, and I wasn't diagnosed until my adulthood. So this video speaks to my soul lol.
Maybe consider marketing specifically to the ADHD crowd. I bet a lot of your loyal followers already are. Time blindness, object permanence, organization that works specifically for us... you're covering all of this, and more. Plus, your relatable struggles and failures. In any case, I'm so glad I found you through my permaculture gardening interest.
I completely agree with this. I struggle with all of those things every day. They have certainly tested the limits of love in my marriage too. As I wasn't diagnosed as ADHD till later in my adulthood. I was treated for another 8 years after diagnosis, after I was medicated for a while for ADHD, we realized I am also on the spectrum for autism. My husband is also a late in life diagnosed autistic. So my adhd side does all the thing that stress my hubby out. So any help I can get with these things just makes my life so much better. I have made a ton of progress in the 3 years, but still have a lot of work to do. Anne's videos have been amazingly helpful to me, but this one spoke to my soul lol.
I’m blown away hearing you say that you felt dumb and you were afraid to teach. I’ve learned so much from you and I love the way you teach! Thank you for the wonderful videos.
These are great tips…specifically for people with ADHD. It has nothing to do with being lazy, and everything to do with being neurodivergent. It’s surreal watching this, is as if I’m watching myself explain all the things I do/have done to try to manage myself in a world that isn’t set up for me, except through the lens of a full fledged farmer. Your first tip about dairy animals getting you up in the morning, I literally got chickens for the same reason, and did not install automated doors, so I had to get up, dressed, and go let them out. Thanks for normalizing the need to for good mental health.
I worked a 40-60 hour/week job, commuting 3 hours/day while developing my 10 acre farm, caring for two horses, 3 dogs, and 5 cats and overseeing my mother's care for her last ten years while dementia engulfed her. I learned to do only what needed to be done, when it needed to be done in the best way to do it. I learned to function on minimal sleep, cook bulk recipes when I had time to cook and I asked for help when I needed it. I'm glad to have that phase of life behind me.
That is wonderful. You are inspiring. I have been trying to prepare a part of my yard about 1250sf for a vegetable garden by fixing up the soil with organic matter and setting up a fence. I care for my home, husband and 4 kids while also working full time. Sometimes I get discouraged but I will persevere. With God's help, I will have my vegetable soon. I have been growing my plants in pots since February and some are starting to flower so I want to transplant maybe this weekend.
@@sailorPinata I was, when I retired, a year before my mother passed, I slept about 12 to 18 hours a day for about six months. Thankfully I'm now able to make my health my priority.
My favorite thing about having goat chores once a week (I help on a local farm) was that even when I was fighting a very dark period of life, I had to get up and going on Saturday morning. It also got me out with goats 😊 and on a beautiful farm. 😊 All good for pulling me through and keeping me moving.
I was surprised by what you said about costumes helping us work. It's very true! This is one of those things we always sort of knew that has recently been proven. It helps your mindset and it helps you access associated memories better! You can also use flavors or smells. Leave your chicken books by the chickens for a while, get the smell in the pages, and when you go to your chickens the smell will bring the information you've read closer to the surface. I learned about that from my psyc 101 teacher, but this stuff comes up a lot in what I'd call 2nd tier magic stuff
I wanted a storage box like hers (looks like a photo storage box) but I'm super cheap and it was too much for me. I went to the thrift store and bought old index card boxes, bill/receipt organizers. I have one for flowers, one for cold season planting and one for summer veggies, each organized alphabetically. It doesn't look as nice though 🤣 Just some other ideas for you to think about!
Put Several (3 or 4) carp in the pond to keep the algae out. They are bottom feeders who keep your pond clean, thus eliminating the need for an eletrical aeroator!!! Your welcome!!! BTW, love your videos. I have the very same issues but they did not have a name in the 1960's, oh yes they did, lazy, no ambition.
Instrumental music got me through college. It perfectly occupies the distractible part of my brain. Lots of great advice, but I think more people could do that
For me it doesn't matter if there are lyrics or not. If I'm not familiar with the song the lyrics won't distract more than anything else. Oddly, I'm a songwriter and multi instrumentalist; I am hearing the whole song not focusing on lyrics
I’m happy for you as well as proud that you have a therapist app for your sponsor! (I comment while watching as f you couldn’t tell 😂) Mental health issues should be addressed without a stigma! Thank you for sharing!!!
I am not sure how I haven't found your channel sooner. I never comment on videos but I just had to say that you have helped me. I've been struggling with motivation, purpose and other blah blah blahs, I appreciate your straightforward approach minus the frills that are in so many videos. The pig pen is a great example. Thank you.
The brain dump is a huge help for me. I make drawings, lists, or whatever I need. I am not as good at doing the calendar part although I admit when I do, Iam far more effective. Love your tips. I have learned so much from you this year. Thanks
LOVE THE POST-IT board! With my extreme Adult A.D.H.D. I’ve found so much more productivity with post-its and white boards! ❤❤ I’ve also gotten in the habit of putting things in the way on the way. Pitch fork in compost and all! Love it!😍 Do not disturb is my favorite as well!! As a handyman I have task specific buckets. I look at my list of jobs for a day and load only the related buckets in the morning. I keep general tools in my vehicle at all times. Great video!!!❤
I think I need to try the post-its and white boards method. I just find when I see too many things on the list it overwhelms me and makes me shut down. So I do love the idea of having it so you can cover it if you need too as well. As long as you remember it is back there lol. Also an adult diagnosed AuDHD person. Who has struggled to find the way that works best. I do love the idea of a tool bag for each kind of job and I have been trying to do that. Only issue I have is we only have 1 of certain tools. I would buy extras, but we are on a very fixed budget for now. I am considering getting Chickens for the same reason she got cows. I just don't think I am quite ready for that one yet. Plus I am about to work on building some permaculture beds like she made. I am also going to be preparing for neck surgery again before long. So I will have to put my impulsivity to get chickens on hold for now lol.
@@melsgalleria for this tools that get used on multiple tasks I call them general tools. They stay in one place where I will always have them. I don’t have many duplicates. That gets expensive. Best wishes and blessings to find your path on all that!
I love the moveable whiteboards. I use postits & rearrange them. I use plastic report covers in a 3 ring binder. A stack of whiteboards is even better.
So many good tips here Anne! There are many more I could add but I'll just focus on the most important ones for you personally. I've been watching every video (fully) that you've made over the past few years and from what I see I must say that you've become a more wholesome person, by doing all this that you mentioned. I'll point out three things that I think everyone else could also benefit from: a) You understand the value of a healthy work-life balance b) You're so brave by being vulnerable and open to show your mistakes and "failures" c) You actually enjoy the process of "doing chores" So, just keep going, you're doing GREAT and take it easy dear ♥
Gosh I’m so glad I watched this- really needed that encouragement today. Living on a farm I’m mainly in charge of and attempting to grow in bad soil (just watched that vid- we’ve not lived here long enough for a big transformation yet) and having to go out to find a FT job wondering how to do it all… this morning I was feeling completely overwhelmed and physically ill. Watching you gives me hope that maybe I can too.
Hey Anne, I’m not squeezing any dairy teeters but here late night watching. Have to get the rest of the the garden in tomorrow. Permaculture I’m pumped for! Mental health matters for sure. Looking forward to the brain dump and plans. We mostly work off-grid and it’s a blessing.
I'm so glad I found your channel. You are inspiring and I wanna get my garden (and life) sorted and organized to suit me and my easily overwhelmed brain. Thank you, Anne! Warm summer greatings from Sweden
Anne, your timing is sooo perfect. I used to facilitate workshops on productivity & profit improvement, consulting & such, so these are all truely old truths I "know" ... but this stage in my life is different from those days. Our fallible humanity makes it so unbelievably easy to get way off track when our routines , environment, careers or households change. When we are misdirecting ourselves, even just one degree & a step off course every day and pretty soon we end up going the wrong direction on a one-way street, in a town two counties over! Anyway, your reminders, unique examples & kind heart was exactly what I needed to hear today. God bless you & all those you love! ❤ Wishing you success in your book & all your courses too.
You are such an inspiration and a JOY to follow! You’ve given me and my husband the confidence to plant our own veggie garden, without overthinking it. My husband and I are excited for what we’re calling our “experiment” and are already looking forward to seeing what works and what we can improve on for next year! You have fantastic content ❤ All the best, Anne!
Love all your videos, but this is my favorite so far... Being ADHD, you have to find hacks to get and stay productive. thank you, Anne, for your channel and the book recs!
Great combination of theory and intuition/practice! Looking forward to the book! The 'costume' thing is called enclothed cognition, by the way. It can be a powerful tool in dealing with a number of psychosocial challenges ( breaking with bad habits, dealing with fears and insecurities, etc)
Inspiring! I'm a perfectionist and if I can't do it perfectly I tend to leave it, which leaves a messy house. Tons of your tips are things I learned the hard way! Especially trying to beat my time at a task (make it a game) & the brain dump. Sometimes I just tell myself to be mature and do the task. Then something fun. I've been learning that my garden doesn't have to look perfect. I'm doing a food forest and also harvesting all the weeds, which means we let the weeds grow. 😱. Hubby is coming around on that.
Very valuable advice. I like the one about getting stuff done with minimum fast product rather then perfection. I apply it for little conveniences around house and garden and it makes huge difference. Yes some things will need to be improved upon but i can do that over time
Great information so far. When she got to productive procrastination, I thought of the days when I sold beads on ebay. I would get in the mood to shop. Instead of heading to the stores or online shopping for myself, I would head to the bead outlets and buy more product. They were pretty and shiny and fit the mood
I align with everything you are saying. Being organized is how I get things done as well. I am looking forward to the book. Are you going to have online woodworking complete courses that cover basics and progresses to harder projects? I am interested or I will need to move near you when the school opens 😊 Side note: Bluetooth headphones are not good for your brain ❤️ I am happy to see you working with your hand ❤️ Thanks for the video. Keep them coming 😊
I LOVE this video! I have heard these points from countless other content creators in a myriad of other videos, but this video is so concise and practical and all in one. Thank you so much! It all makes so much sense and feels like I can put it into practice right away.
Thank you, your videos are helpful in so many ways. I've been feeling discouraged the past couple days after some small theft on my property and its been hard to find the motivation to keep going. But I know the life I want so eventually I'll get back on track and for now it's ok to take a break and process how I'm feeling ❤
Thankyou for doing the temperature conversions in the bottom left hand corner, it saved a lot of mental calculation for this Aussie brain. When you talk about planting in late May can you also write late Spring, in the bottom left hand corner too please. That too would save brain strain for your viewers on the other side of the world.
Loved this video, far from a Lazy Girl you are! ......(as I have said before) Just Amazing! Dairy farmer, Gardener, Furniture maker, Writer, Goat momma, Donkey Momma, Lama Momma, Musician, You Tuber, Wifey... I suspect there is more, oh yeah Dogs, Cats, and Homesteader...Cant wait for the BOOK! And Anne, Thank You for your honesty about Mental Health challenges and asking for help.❤ You inspire me to no end...daisy
Valuable content while tending to your animals and garden was delightful, it kept my focus, and that is no easy feat! If you haven’t already, consider adding miracle worker to your list of trades! Having numerous skills coupled with poor time mgmt has been a life long struggle, and not mastering any of them due to poor time mgmt takes a mental toll, so thank you for sharing!
I live on a farm and we have raised just about everything through the years. Having said that, you are amazing! I am so impressed. Great job… Great videos. keep it up!
@Anneofalltrades LOVE this video. So many good tips. And when you showed the "in the way on the way" tip it reminded me of a question! I have been a lazy composter for a couple years without much success lol. I love your compost videos, the house with walls and roof and "people" makes so much sense! I just bought a compost thermometer and am excited to start again. I have a two pile setup very similar to yours with pallet squares and I made the "house" with fresh greens inside and used the existing 'not very composted' compost as the walls and roof and floor. MY QUESTION IS how do you add in the barn droppings/coop cleaning daily to your compost pile without allowing it to cool off and slow down? I made a lovely log cabin stack in my compost bin to get things cooking, but now I have one to two 5 gallon buckets each day or so of cleaning. Do I add it on top, mix the whole pile again (😳) or add that to a new pile and use as the beginning of a new "house" compost pile. Help!
That is a great question which I wished I’d addressed in that video, in retrospect: I have multiple piles going most of the time, and often a “soon this will be added to the mega pile” pile that kind of hangs out in the margins. With house compost, I have a five gallon bucket with sawdust that I add all the house compost to for a few weeks (always covering with sawdust to keep smells and bugs out) until I’ve got enough for a new pile.
I bought noise-cancelling earbuds this past year and was surprised at how well they help keep me on task. I didn't realize how much every little sound distracts me.
Thank you, Anne. You’ll never know how immensely helpful this video was for me. Just sent in my info for the cohort. I’ll be 55 in 19 days and still don’t have neurodiverse living figured out. I am grateful for your willingness to share your experiences. Very much looking forward to more vids, the book, hopefully the cohort ❤ Donna Jean (Boston area urban gardener, Lakes Region. NH mini farmer, well, someday a farmer! I am a farmer in my mind. I tell my students I’m going to be a farmer when I grow up 😂). Much appreciation!
This was amazing and perfect! I exhibit ADHD traits and I’ve never been diagnosed. This video was very validating and a lot of new tools I have started using plus some new ones I have never thought of before. Thank you for this. This is perhaps the most important and valuable gardening video for me so far this year.
I found you just recently 😊, I love your personality and energy. Your energy motivates me, being with you in your garden feels like time well spent with a brilliant good friend. Bright blessings for your day..
Fairely new subscriber, been watching the past year or so. Can I just say how wonderful it is to watch those fingers fly on your right hand! God is good! Keep on keeping on!
Love ur donkeys, living vicariously thru you’re awesome farm..I consider myself a lazy gardener as well and hoping to get better at woodworking….great ideas
🤔 You know, it seems like a misnomer or conflict of terms to actually wish someone a Happy Memorial Day. So I will say that I hope you & your family enjoy this special day today. And to remember why we commemorate today in remembrance of our fallen heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy. Have a great day Kiddo 😊.
I have never been so productive as when I am avoiding something I don't want to do. All manner of things get cleaned up, and odd jobs knocked off the list. I have started to have an "avoiding things" list where I put minor todos to pick up in just this situation. I do a few of those, laugh at myself for being so childish, and then go back to avoiding everything and getting nothing done.
Just watched your video about buying 50lbs of Corn Starch. You can use it for body powder especially your feet it's silky smooth. Put it on knots line shoe stings rub it together wait a few minutes then take the knot out with ease. Week that's two hope that helps. I'm sure there are many more.
Hey Anne, wondering where you've been for awhile. Liked this one as it reminds me of all I've done to improve chaos. Too bad you don't get more likes and rewards for watching these. This is one Ill return to.
WOW, WOW,WOW. This the first time I have ever said this after watching a RU-vid video, but that was a lot of fun. Excellent job. I am looking forward to your new adventures.
Love your videos! Honest, real, helpful, informative and engaging! I am windering about your beautiful dark (black?) barn. Is it painted? Looks like it could be charred like the japanese methid.
My grandmother always said if you kept the floors swept, the beds made and the sink empty, nobody will notice the rest. 🫶 She's really not wrong. Im definitely saving this video tho. Im still working on my routine. And staying focused.
I’m very happy to report that, almost 9 months after the injury, I’m almost back to normal- at least a new normal. I’ve lost some permanent feeling and function in my thumb but was very miraculously spared further damage and I’ve regained enough function in both my thumb and forefinger to be able to do all the important things again, some just a little differently than before. I’m thankful for the healing and the forced rest; though it was painful and frustrating at the time, I look back on this season with so much gratitude, the gained perspective and willingness to ask for help when I need it as a result of this whole thing was a very important life lesson. God is good, all the time. He’s sent many angels to help and encourage along the way.
Im going to be teaching horticulture to alot of clients at our state hospital. i have never taught before. i do not know where to start. its going to be challenging to say the least. thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I'm kind of interested in learning how to do woodworking. I think making chairs would be fun. Suggestions on how to learning/ books/cds/videos/etc.? I have a draw knife and am looking for a shaving horse. Great video!
one pushes her/his productivity limits, on and on, turnes robot like, hits the ceiling and finds her/his self in a comfy shrink chair. for the many, if not for the most. thank you for the vid, some useful tips noted down.
