Fascinating to get the authentic story from Peter McAleese. I told my careers adviser in 1969 that I wanted to be a mercenary. He said I need to join the British Army first to have some type of skills to offer. I was in an infantry regiment in 1976 when all this was taking place. All I can say is thank goodness I did'nt see out the rest of my dream. Respect to the guys who went out there.

I left the Army about that time and was told on a number of occasions about someone recruiting over a travel agency in Camberley. I resisted the temptation and glad I did. Callan was killing recruits from the UK too.

I'm myself a survivor of the psychopath Colonel Callan..he put his 9mm pistol in the my head to kill me...it's happened at the palace in São Salvador...what probably stopped him to do it; was that the president of the FNLA Holden Roberto was at that time there and also Madeira ,was a great friend of mine ...I did not feel any fear of him and even told him to shoot calling him a mercenary...I was really lucky no doubt...he made me undress the military clothes and it was in my underwear that I walked out of that place and that very disturbing man

My goodness. I remember the trial happening at the time ; I was 11 years old, and being shocked by how Gearheart was executed (presumably because he was american). 15 years later I met an ex Para in Plymouth who had fought under Callan and deserted. I was shocked that he had no sympathy for his fellow Brits. He gave me a knowing look and those executed got what they deserved. Obviously I do not know the ins and outs of it as you do. It seems Callan was totally unhinged but at least he took full blame and tried to protect his fellow accused and take the full blame. I have great sympathy for your grave loss. I cannot imagine anyone of sound mind turning their guns on their own men; especially a Para as your Dad was. The 4 that were executed by the Angolans were John Derek Barker, Callan, Andrew McKenzie and Daniel Gearheart.

Well well...I don't know exactly what went down on 'Bloody Sunday'... I was on the Circuit with an Ex 1 Para guy who was there and he said that they were definitely fired on first from a high rise building. I had heard of 'Colonel Callan' but did not know much of anything about it. Interesting... because from what I've been reading, Costas Georgiou was 1 Para and was present on 'Bloody Sunday', he is referred to as UNK 180 in investigation documents regarding that day, he fired 26 rounds and was directly connected to the killing of four people.

Interesting, I've watched this one twice Rusty to try and get a handle of what was going on. I found some information on Costas Georgiou, really interesting and I believe Peter could have been in danger from that guy. Apparently he likes post offices, there seems be be a kind off "black market" for soldiers where they are hired to do the dirty work for governents wordwide. This is obviously well know in certain circles, but in civi street it's not. It makes me wonder about the rules of engagement and the potential for people like the "Colonel" to commit murder

Copeland was 3 para, who were the 14 men who were murdered by Callan and Copeland, were they all British.. what was Copelands back ground and age etc.. you said Peter that these ex soldiers corrupted themselves due to the corrupt leadership of Callan, it sounds like Callan saw you as his equal Peter and would have murdered you if he could have, but your natural instinct outsmarted Callan and was his downfall in the end.. I remember this episode of the Angolan war played out on the world media stage,, Callan was no coward or Walter mitty as you say, and his final redemption of sorts was to fall on his sword in court and take full responsibility of his actions and try to save his co-defendants from execution.. the young lad of 20 who only got off the plane, as well as the American Gearhart were the real victims in all of this.. the recruiter in the UK was a total coward

A mercenary is a cold calculating killer there is no sentiment just a well paid job. and killing is in there make up and without a second thought they kill who has to be killed and move on to there next assignment. a an ordinary soldier will do his duty. they have a conscience mercenaries are not allowed the luxury of a conscience or they are as good as dead.cold hard cash is there mentor.

I get it that Callan had balls but what made him fearful. I was surprised Peter saying he made him feel uncomfortable taking in to consideration Peter is a trained sas soldier. I can't u derstand how Callan had so much power and executing other ex soldiers and other soldiers letting it happen.
@michaeldonald4532
@michaeldonald4532 3 года назад
Callan was a genuine nut job, capable of pulling out a pistol and shooting a fellow soldier in the blink of an eye over any slight. Callan was threatened by Peter simply by his reputation of being a good soldier, and a leader of men, that alone is enough for Callan to shoot him in the back.. also Callans murderous rampage on prisoners, as well as his executing the 17 year old in the ranks. means this guy cant be reasoned with, and is likely to shoot in the heat of an argument, one of the men could have shot Callan, but not many soldiers are psychopathic like Callan, to do that in the heat of a moment, one has to live with onself afterwards, so this is why they stood back and did nothing.. most of the soldiers reruited from London were not up for the task..
@carloshannon8346
@carloshannon8346 3 года назад
Read his book and that should answer your question. Aye Peter was ex Regiment but he was flown into Angola on a whims notice. Pecking orders and loyalties already established, he was only there 3 months not a lot of time to establish yourself. Then the massacre happened and the rest is history. No doubt a lot of the ex Army lads would have liked to put an end to Callan but constant fear of reprisals and the Cubans knocking on the door on top of food and water shortages would not have been good for morale. A perfect storm of fuck ups went in Callan and Copelands favour

Have a read about how psychopaths, who all have narcissistic behaviours, manipulate others. Then you will understand. They are skilled at bending people to their will, while other folks know to stay clear. Callan/Georgiou appeared to fit the bill.

I truly believe Callan and all the British boys that headed to Angola were somehow riding the wave of success left over from Colonel Mike Hoare in the Congo. Ok not so much the Katanga succession in 61 but the Simba rebellion in 64 with Tshombe was a great success against a well trained and equipped enemy. Callan believed he could echo that success. Sadly, he did not have the experience and wherewithal that Mad Mike had and by the mid 70's those troops had already rotated throw Soviet and Cuban training camps and could use the heavy and advanced weapons in the Soviet arsenal. Callan had small arms and broken jeeps half the time. As a man, lets face it. He was a nasty bastard and a bully boy. Should have been slotted the first chance the boys had. c'est la vie, Also the CIA was bank rolling Hoare. That always helps lol.
@afroliciouspresents3603

It seems that Callan was nothing more than a common thug. What's interesting is that, for various reasons, other men submitted to his will. What does that say about them? It's fascinating stuff. The dynamics seem similar to Hitler, David Koresh, Charles Manson, etc. They are charismatic, even magnetic, but only on the surface. Beneath, there is nothing.
