I’m afraid that I’ll pull the pan and find nothing then add too much rtv on reapplication and then have the issue lol
@boostcontrolledperformance1523
Thin 2-3mm wide strip around the pan is all you need. You’ll be fine!

I’ll be sure to have the shop check this next time I have mine serviced.
@boostcontrolledperformance1523
Based on what some are seeing, it’s a good peace of mind.

I wonder if there is aftermarket conversion from rtv to gasket setup. Kinda hope subaru addresses this design but... I don't know... Compared to other manufacturers, subaru often seem... Lacking in R&D engineering personnel or are lazy. I'm more surprised how this RTV issue wasn't in the lessons learned section from FA20 engines, esp. With 86/BRZ issues. I guess they went all out on intake valve spring issues, but I definitely do remember this being an issue for the BRZ owners back then as well. Subarues in general, are great and I'll always love them. I just wish they had a bit more finesse in their engineering. That's all. The VB WRX is definitely there, but still fell short a few.

Thinking about this issue and not having to drop the pan, then reseal it with rtv, which could add more to the pan again. What about draining the oil first and then using a shop vac to suction out everything in the pan? Maybe use one of the smaller accessories to really get a good suction on the drain hole.
@boostcontrolledperformance1523
That is just paranoia. These pans have been sealed by RTV for over 20 years and there are no issues when you apply it correctly. Many other brand do the same. It just seems that the FA engines (because they use RTV on almost every gasketed surface) had some excessive RTV issues. In our opinion, it doesn't seem as bad as people were making it out to be.

I do see that there wasn't a whole lot of RTV in the pan overall, but would you still say that is a normal ammount of RTV for a 1,000-mile engine? I would personally expect that after a good bit more than that but I'm a Nissan tech primarily so I'm not sure what is normal for Subaru's

I wonder if build date could affect this issue, maybe earlier builds saw more RTV? Just speculation as there isn't enough data to suggest otherwise
@boostcontrolledperformance1523
Definitely a possibility. Over time I’m sure more info will surface.

@@boostcontrolledperformance1523 What is the build date on yours? I just bought mine and it has a 12/22 build date.

Ridiculous process to remove an oil pan. The previous generation 2.0 DIT FA doesn’t have this issue. How in the heck does increasing the displacement and changing the turbocharger control precipitate this new design.

@@boostcontrolledperformance1523 cool! Later builds seem better with the RTV issue. Mine is 12/22.

Subaru has fallen so much this last 10-15 years. I used to love their cars so much and have owned two over the years.

is anyone making a gasket for these oil pans yet?
@boostcontrolledperformance1523

Subaru and other manufactures have been using RTV for many years, it's not an issue 99% of the time.
@Rabbit14
@Rabbit14 Год назад
Couldn't you just snake a snap on camera into the oil pan and see?!
@boostcontrolledperformance1523
Ideally yes; however, all it takes is a little oil on the camera to impede visibility. It's also very tough to navigate all the way into the pickup tube from the drain hole.

Not even a year old and the brand new subies already have issues.
@8JFJK8

What issues? That little bit of RTV? That isnt enough to have any effect. It gets caught in the pan and pickup, doesnt go to the engine.
@boostcontrolledperformance1523
We’d consider this a non-issue; at least on our car.
