If you are thinking of working for a nonprofit or social enterprise organization, OR starting a nonprofit and wondering what types of positions you might need in the future, this video outlines several job and career paths in the nonprofit sector.
I have hired my fair share of employees for the 501c3 nonprofit I started many years ago, and have seen many job opportunity descriptions for hundreds of other nonprofits at this point! If you’re exploring a career in nonprofits or starting a nonprofit organization yourself, you might want to keep these things in mind for when it is time for you to hire your own team.

Very helpful. Thank you. I just graduated with an MPA degree and haven't done much in my job search. I currently work full time and it's been a challenge to find an appropriate time to search for jobs, much less knowing what titles seemed interesting to me. Thank you.

Hi! Thank you for all that insight. I am about to finish my Political Science BA and Global Studies minor. Do you recommend any website to look for a job on non-profits that would maybe give an internship or entry-level job in the NYC area? I am trying to navigate this world now and I have been struggling to find any help

For city specific, you might want to consider checking out the landscape of nonprofits in your area. I recommend seeing if NYC has a chapter of Young Nonprofit Professionals - they always share great job opps! Also check out New York Cares in your area, they'll have a network of organizations they partner with.

Hello! I'm not sure of the rules around that. A job in a nonprofit is just like any job legally though, so I wonder if the same rules apply for other jobs?

So far, every job at a non-profit is about profit. They all work together to support the guy who actually delivers the bag of potatoes.

I am not sure I agree with that perspective. :) The fact is, managing a nonprofit and its programs often involves a lot of work people don't see or understand, but that doesn't mean it's not necessary. Example: Food Bank. Food Bank needs a building to store all the food, trucks for food deliveries to pantries, etc. That stuff doesn't magically appear or stay maintained. Someone has to raise millions of dollars. Someone has to handle insurance and operations (if the organization fails an audit or falls out of compliance, it can't deliver food!), etc. etc. Creating social change is often WAY more complex than people see, and we need to work to help people understand the true costs of it so society can stop under-funding the work.

@@AmberMelanieSmith Thanks. I realized after I watched your other videos that helping people really is important to you. It's a safe assumption that not all non-profits are the same. Wikipedia says that nonprofits are held to their missions. I stopped at a non-profit for job help yesterday, and then read about the mission...and realized that my job conversations went outside of their narrow scope.....so it helps to read the mission..which is probably something that happens where what is needed is outside of the mission...so it probably helps to have referrals to other non-profits to point people to. Wikipedia also says that money in access of the non-profits mission doesn't go to individuals. Then I Googled a list of local non-profits, local hospitals and colleges are the most common, which are notoriously you know....so the bottom line is that "non-profit" is a stereotype.
