Came across this video randomly. I haven’t commented on a video in like 3 years, and this is an old ass account. But this dude can play. His chops are incredibly clean and I just wanna throw out there that he’s a really impressive drummer. Good on him.

24 has a nice warm sound, but that may be in part because of the unported head. Nice comparison! You can really hear the short sustain of birch; the sound arrives then quickly disappears.

I love the 24s for the sound and looks. I hate being 6 foot tall, reason why is, everyone tells me at every gig “your kit looks small” I play with the standard sizes (22x18 12x8 and 16x16)

Good video thanks. I wonder how the 24 would sound with the hole in the reso. Really no comparison. If the 22 had no port and the 24 did, you'd get more boom from the 22 and more attack from the 24,
@ErikGunnarEdlund
@ErikGunnarEdlund 4 года назад
Yeah, I know, that's unfortunate and I don't have the 22 any more. There are other nuances to listen for as well, which I tried to catch with the room mic. For sure, it would be nice to do an even more scientific test one day, but I think the 24 is a different beast anyway, at least feeling wise.
@michaellozano4578

I've heard that 24s don't need ports because the size is too large for the air to travel through to make a difference but I really never tried it in recording. My 24 is mad boomy when I tune the resonant head as tight as possible. Very loud unique sound, but that boom makes it harder to go faster or do Bonham style triplets on the foot. But maybe I just suck. Anyways, my 24 Ludwig Acrylic sounds way sexier than my 22 Tama wood kick, but it's harder to use and stay on beat for me.
@ErikGunnarEdlund

@@michaellozano4578 LOL, I'm sure you don't suck! Actually, I think even Bonham's kick wouldn't sound that great if heard up close. Anyway, I think you're on to something: 24's should be used for a reason. (Btw, I'm pretty drunk right now, so excuse any bad spelling or grammar, lol)

@@ErikGunnarEdlund I've read in a few places that Led Zeppelin 1 (first album) was recorded on Bonham's green Slingerland kit with a 22" bass drum and he got into the larger sizes when they started playing arenas (and also b/c of Vinnie Appice). Now that you've had your 24 for awhile are you still glad you got rid of the 22"? I've been thinking of buying a 24 myself (hence why I'm here). I think tuned right (and with no port) they are simply deeper and more boomier. 22" and especially 20 are more focused. I was at an outdoor party last year and the house kit had a 24". I was able to hear it from the front while other bands played and it just sounded so damn good.
@ErikGunnarEdlund
@ErikGunnarEdlund 2 года назад
@@oldowl4290 Interesting info! Hm, good question. Since the toms sound so good, it would've been cool to also have the 22" kick for "normal" gigs, but I already have so many 20" and 22" bass drums (Maple Custom, Absolutes, Phoenix, Gretsch, etc etc), so I haven't really missed it. I've only gigged the above kit once since the recording of the video, at a small club a couple of weeks ago. The (still unported) 24" did feel a bit boomy and I was worried that the sound guy would hate it, but he loved the sound of it. I wasn't really used to it, since I've mostly practiced on 20" and 22' kicks lately. But again, you could port it and muffle it and... but I've simply decided that this is my "big rock kit" and I really love it for what it is. I personally wouldn't have a 24 as my only kick, but, just wow... what a thunderous sound and feel!

Thank you for the wonderful video and performance! May I ask you a few questions about the sound making of the 24inch Bass drum? I'm also trying to buy a YAMAHA Recording custom 24 x 14inch bass drum. Is Reso head using Remo Powerstroke 4 Coated? Do you have mute again? If the Butter head is Remo Powerstroke 3 Coated and the Reso head is Remo Powerstroke 4 Coated, should I mute it? And is mute such as Felt strip effective for playing tight sounds? If possible, I don't want to make a hole in the Reso head. I'm sorry for the long question. I look forward to your reply.
@ErikGunnarEdlund
@ErikGunnarEdlund 4 месяца назад
Hi and thanks a lot! The bass drum comes with Coated Powerstroke 3 as batter head and resonance head is Powerstroke 3 Smooth White (I think). That's what's used in the video above. However, that was not appreciated by a lot of sound engineers (a little bit too open/boomy) and it was not very practical for normal pop/rock situations. I now use it with two light fleece blankets inside, still unported. It sounds really good! I have not tried it with Powerstroke 4 or felt strips. Either or could work, or maybe in combination. I recommend you to try it with the original heads first, then add felt strips or blankets. If you're not happy, or if you don't want to muffle, you could experiment with different reso heads. Good luck on your mission and keep on drumming!

@@rainsong7327 Yeah, there is definitely a noticeable difference. I keep hearing unintended "flams" in pretty much every video featuring a 24" bass drum. Since I don't bury the beater into the head, I personally don't experience that so much, but I do feel that it calls for a different kind of playing, since it takes longer for it to breath. You can hear it in the above video (at around 2:04). The double strokes are not as clear as with the 22". But then again, that could be helped to an extent with muffling, or maybe by porting the front head. Or simply by getting used to playing it, I guess, haha!

Its always more difficult to hear the attack and tone of a drum when crash and rides are being used. You tended to use the ride when hitting the 24" so I didn't get as good of a sense of the 24" as i did of the 22." What heads were you using? Were they PS 3? Thank you so much for the kind words and for commenting! I know, I find it frustrating myself when I watch comparison videos (be it cymbals, or drums) and the playing isn't consistent. Both sound very punchy and musical, your drum sound is nice man. I preferred the 22 in this clip, but it was very close. It sounded like the fundamental was a little less pronounced on the 24”, which is very common. I notice often when recording 22-26 inch kick drums the fundamental can get lost, especially with deeper shells. The note is definitely singing on both however and sounds nice, you have the technique to bring it out. I had a drummer bring in a 22x20 (which I didn’t even know was a thing) a couple of years back and it sounded dead no matter what he did, until we tuned it quite a bit higher. You need to have a heavy foot to drive a large drum and he didn’t. He wanted a big sound, hence an enormous drum, but unfortunately it backfired a little. Because he hadn’t recorded with it this far, he didn’t realise, although the drum was very punchy, it had no fundamental at all, just beater noise and overtones, On a side note, I recently got a kit for my little project studio, it’s one of those micro kits, a sonor with jazz in mind. Now you can’t make the 8” tom sound anything but, an 8” Tom. However, it has a 16” kick that can be tuned be very low and it sounds deep, punchy and huge. I’ll see if I can dig up a review that has decent audio. Sorry, a bit of tangent there, but I guessed people may considering shell sizes and thought this might be interesting. Anyways, Great sound man and you have some serious chops too. I’ll be back. I do love the recording custom, it’s harmonically very rich and can be left to ring (sounds lush in these headphones) you do it justice.

Correct! I have now muffled the 24", so it's way more controlled and sounds more like a 22". However, if both were unported... the 24" would sound so much bigger.

Sure, I have four kits with 20" bass drum. It was my favorite size back in the days. Mostly play 22" these days, but the house kit at the last venue had a 20" and it felt tight and nice.

@@powerinformation Yeah, I have tried it, but only in music stores. I might give it a try, since I prefer somewhat longer sticks. I totally understand that SD10 feels massive, since both AJ5 and SJS are thin!

@ErikGunnarEdlund
@ErikGunnarEdlund 4 года назад
I guess the 22" is a versatile compromise that simply became the standard size. 24" and 18" are considered niche products for drummers with a specific taste. Might also be practical reasons (harder to play, harder to fit in a car etc). But who knows... all that may change.
@shannonedens7854
@shannonedens7854 4 года назад
Because it sucks hauling a 24 to bar gigs, and they are too big for most small spaces. I had a 24 on my last kit, and I rarely used it. I ended up using a 20 most of the time. The 24 did sound good though!
@jkben7415
@jkben7415 2 года назад
The drums are not set up the same for a real comparison. Large hole port on the 22 ...no port on the 24. That is a big sound difference right there. I learned nothing from this video per the 22 - 24 difference. apple to oranges not scientific enough for me.
@biodigitaljazz1
@biodigitaljazz1 2 года назад
Here's your science. If there's less surface area for the resonant head to resonate, ie a port hole, it will lose some of the boom and become slightly more thuddier - more pronounced attack and less sustain. Tighter and rounder tone. This will also be achieved by going to a 16 depth instead of a 14. This is a pretty decent video. Being rude accomplishes nothing.
@scottleacox7516
@scottleacox7516 11 месяцев назад
For some reason, that is the standard. 22 and smaller get ported, 24 and up do not.
