.22 vs .25 Comparison Test | Which Is the Best Caliber for Airguns/Airgun Hunting ....???

Hey Hunter Nation! Today I'm going to give the pros and cons of both .22 caliber airguns and .25 caliber airguns. I will test both .22 and .25 cal pellets to test which one is better for your airgun. I will show you which one is good for hunting and which one is not. Will the popular .22(5.5mm) pellet be more powerful or will the .25(6.35mm) pellet be better? Today I will help you choose which pellet is best for your air rifle! Let me know in the comments bellow which caliber is you prefer!

I used to have a Sam Yang Big Bore 909, .45 caliber PCP air rifle… I used .454 caliber lead roundballs. Very accurate, high velocity, & the roundball engaged the riflings very well.

At the same energy, the smaller caliber will penetrate more because of its smaller surface area and faster velocity. Depends on the pellet but the heavier pellet can retain its energy a bit farther but it’s not enough to convince me to go with the .22 if we’re taking same energy. At full power though, the .25 wins hands down

Also, the smaller caliber penetration doesnt hold up when you’re shooting something like poly mags with a fine tip. .25 wins again!

@@edgarlombera7066even in slugs it’s not close I mean honestly especially if you have a regulated pcp it’s not close if you can allow yourself to push a heavy slug to speeds lighter pellets reach

I own both. It would be hard to choose but one of the biggest bottom lines is knockdown power and accuracy and .25 has them both. My .25 is the Hatsan Torpedo 155 Vortex with under lever cocking. For what it is its very powerful. But my all around favorite airgun is my Daisy powerline 822 .22 cal. Not nearly as powerful but its still my favorite.

Yeah it’s a pretty tough choice. I like 25 cal at longer ranges but I also really enjoy plinking with a 22 cal air rifle

22 imo. Velocity being the same It drops varmint better for the wrong reasons. My 25 passes thru smaller stuff without dumping energy inside 50 yards. Pellet construction and 25 being choked may have some impact. Both polymags both within 100fps of each other.

That could be the problem… the polymag expands better in higher velocity, dumping energy on target much better. If it’s passing thru then it’s not expanding, you’re not using the .25 the way it should be. What’s guns are you using?

??? That’s crazy how the pellets are intact. I recovered some lead .22 & .25 pellets from shooting through 5/16” fiberglass & they were smashed flat into shrapnel.

.25 isnt longer distance as compared to .22 with the same amount of power. This is because with the same amount of power the .22 would have much higher velocity therefore much higher range. But you are right in a way as technically if a .25 and .22 had the same velocity the .25 would go farther or at least be more accurate at longer ranges but would require much more power.

Hold the phone. Because the 25 is heavier by a slim margin, it can resist breezes better. A heavier slow projectile will carry more energy to further distance.

The .25 shines just because it give you a bigger margin of error where as a .22 you have to be more precise especially with a heart and long shot. Past 50yds the .25 is overall the better choice if you’re considering longer range kills because of the energy it retains. But all of this is only true if we’re talking about a PCP air rifles, if it were break barrels, the .22 will be better.

@@HunterTom The lighter the projectile the more accurate at the closer distance. The heavier the projectile the more accurate the further the distance. It all comes down to the overall or specific need.

This pcp .25 cal is so loud haha I only have .177 cal pellet rifles since I dont have a PAL yet (canada 495 fps limits .22 cant shoot much anyway) but those toys sure do push me to get my liscense

Air Force Condor .22 vs Air Force Condor .25 both set for max power is a better test. Same gun but different calibers. The larger pellet not penetrating as far means it will dump all it's energy into the animal your shooting instead of wasting it on a pass thru.

I wonder how an projectile from an 25-06 , 6.5mm and/or 25acp would do from these airguns ; if it does pretty descent damage with great yardage and accuracy i might would buy one in .25 or .30 or whatever else calibers do they make air rifles in ?

My guess: those bullets won't make it down the barrel. They are oversized and compressed to the diameter of the barrel, and the airgun wouldn't have the power to overcome the friction. Pellets are soft lead and shaped in a way to easily squish a little. Same with slugs. That would be my guess. Plus, they weigh 140gr compared to like 40 tops. I'm not a doctor, but I'd say don't do it.

tough choice, i have a .22 diana stormrider and the pellets are fairly cheap while heavier pellets like the H&n Baracuda are plenty powerful. i also have a .25 and a .30 cal as well. I have more .22 ammo than anything but from what i see the .25 is quickly becomming the new .22 as big bore becomes more popular

i would say 22 im a fan of fps when your looking at both put it this way..... one chevy truck has 397hp the other 402 hp the 397hp truck is 25k the 402 hp truck is 29k lol is paying 4k more worth a hardly noticeable 5 hp increase no its not 22 will hit its target faster 25 harder ill take the cheetah over a lion anyday

You should have come up with something better, at least shoot them into ballistics gel or something similar if your doing a hunting type comparison and use a better pellet what people are using now like the JSB Hades.

Yeah it’d be better if I was using two Air Force condors. And also something like the hades plus ballistic gel. Although, it was more of a fun test than an experimental one. I might try it in the future if I do get two condors or a .22 barrel for my condor

If you shot somebody in the temple with a .177 cal or the eye youd need to be within 25 yards probably. Anywhere else tho even point blank and no. To make this ALOT shorter, the cheapest handgun would be better for home defense.

Here's your answer. You don't want to kill, you want to stop an attacker from doing what they're doing. A pcp .22 or .25 will get the vast majority of attackers to stop and find another activity.
