my SAKO has a 16 twist and vol is 3720 fps and not much presure and the grouping is the same as what ya got there and I use the same bullet, nice to see folks still useing the great 222 REM alot of fun, shoot straight and good hunting,GOD bless.
hello cavedweller 1959 love your videos iuse remington 722 my first hi-powered rifle in .222 love it still hunt hogs 52gr.blistic tip love shoot when it gets windy out .243 savage . p.s. keep up the good informative videos their great.
Thanks, I love the 222, I'm getting a Light Varmint 21 inch match grade barrel for my Savage....I also remember with great fondness looking through my father's Herter's catalogue, and presently have a Herter's Stocked 30-06 my father owned.
A fantastic Rifle, I have one and I love it! So accurate and yes it can be used for hunting Deer, down to rabbits! A great example of good British engineering!
Nice rifle. I have a barreled action of a remington 788 in 222 I'd like to get stocked and scoped. The bore is beautiful so I think Once I get her built she'll shoot fantasic.
I'm jealous when I was in m My teens I had a brno 222 I loved during hunting season it was allwayse with me I would still have it if it wasn't lost in a truck fire I still have fond memories of that gun they don't come arround often
Fine rifle and a good video everybody buys 223 now but I hope that 222 will do IT for me. Just bought a brno fox in 222 a used one. Maybee the 1:12 twist is better with the 55 grain bullets I think my is a 1:14.
BSA CF2 one of the finest well made rifles, .222Rem is adequate for varmints plinking and cheap to run but if you want a barrel burner ear buster get a 22-250 Rem or 243 Win shooting 55gn bullets just shy of 220 Swift speeds
I have 222 rem win model 70, and leupold scope 3x9 x40 and reloading with 55 gr bullet gmx hornady, for deer and pigs and javeline too. Tamaulipas México.
I have a BSA MONARCH .243 . mine is a tack drive, second projectile in the first hole.the best part with these early BSA is you can adjust the trigger down to firing on bolt closing . not a good idea but you can get them light ..
My dad's friend has a Rem 700 in .222 that looks like its from the same era. Nice wood monte carlo stock with that black plastic at the end of the forearm with the white binding. Has an old Leupold on it. Heavy varmint barrel, set up as a bipod as a p dog gun. Shoots very nicely. I used to drool over it as a kid, it was the first bolt gun I saw with a scope a bipod and I thought it was just about the coolest thing I had ever seen.
I have my Remington 700 triple 2. It is a crazy accurate rifle. It shoots way better than me. Shoots sub MOA with factory rounds. From my Benchmaster rifle rest and hand loads it shoots through the same hole at 100. I try to shoot from a cold barrel between shots if at the range to hopefully extend barrel life. I am excruciatingly slow. Hunting is different and may need follow up shots with a hot barrel. Thanks for sharing.
A short time after this video was made, I rescoped with a 6x18 Meopta. After zeroing 1" high @ 100 yards, The first 3 shots made a nice little clover leaf group. Now I just need time. Thanks for Watching.
I don't shoot hot loads in mine that would further reduce barrel life. I knew a fellow that had another model Remington in triple 2 with a detachable box mag. He was a ranch hand on a ranch here in FL. He shot hot loads in his and let the brass lay. He regularly took deer with it. I don't think the hot loads were any advantage for taking deer but that is what he thought and did probably trying to squeeze out as much range from the cartridge as he could get out of it. Lots of folks take deer with a 223 and there is not a lot of difference between a triple 2 and a 223 except the triple 2 is more accurate and has a little less range. I don't use mine for deer but I could if I had to.
ShoulderRollJason You will not be sorry. Triple 2 is the most accurate right out of the box even with factory loads. Its even better with handloads. You will want to load for it since factory ammo is scarce. I hope more folks start to realize its accuracy and the round becomes more popular so more factory ammo is made for it.
Nice video, I use to reload and will return to it, searching for 222 to buy found your vid, previously, decades back before life got busy ,shot a xp100 really accurate & cheap fun have a savage 223 bvss single shot I like, but way heavy , really want to sell the High recoil stuff I have and buy a 222 or even a 221fb not necessarily in that order
This group size was limited by the scope, It's more of a big game hunting rifle scope. Large thick X hairs. Right now it's topped with a Meopta 6-18x50, Can easely cut that group in half.
I owned a Savage340D in 222 Remington I took everything from javelinas to whitetails and rabbits in between no complaints I hope someday to get another I know Savage don't make them anymore but I heard of Sako and Tikka that's chambering the 222 I'd like to get one someday
I feel your pain. I had a 788 in 308 that was an absolute tack driver. It was handed down to me from my father., the first center fire rifle I ever shot. It was stolen from me about 10 years ago.
I gust acquired the Remington.222 mag from an 80 year ol man who I payed him with tile install I haven’t shot it yet but I will on my next day of look very promising from what I hear I’ll have to change the scope though it has a classic Wever scope
CD thanks much I have been working on my 222 and getting that 80 plus FPS. difference in velocity wasn’t sure what was up have a very accurate load with 20 gr. H4198 and 50 gr vmax..cases are neck turned .
80 fps sounds like a lot but if you get good accuracy, I wouldn't worry about it. I have never used 4198, but I wonder how full is the case with a 20gr charge?? A general rule of thumb is your best results will come with a case that is 90%+ full of powder.
Strange isn't it, back in the day there were a lot of .222s out in the world. Now you seldom see used ones in a gun shop or show. Every one has them tucked away in the safe and wont part with them.
Nice shooting cave dweller. I’ve shot a lot of p dogs. I don’t know if I could hit as many as u. Keep up the good work. Enjoy all your episodes. Nice too watch when you can’t get out there.
I have a custom in .222. Sako action, richards microfit stock, shaw barrel. B and L 24 power dot scope. Did not expect the ragged cloverleaf group it fired. Found out that Hornady has a pet load when they try their bullets. It freakin works. Shaw had sloppy chamber and the shoulder was too far forward. My gunsmith buddy knew what to do with those troubles. Keep shootin'.
I guess I am a maverick. Rechamered at CZ527 in 222 Rem to 221 Fireball. Why? I had tons of 221 FB brass. Nothing wrong with 222 Rem other than that most people don't know it is a great round.
@@cavedweller1959 Good plan. Keep the videos coming. We have a similiar approach to varmint hunting. I enjoy your videos, especailly the ones about rebedding rifles.
Yes it is. I knew a fellow that was a ranch hand on the Bush family ranch in Florida. He had a camo colored stock Remington 788 in triple 2 and that is all he used for deer. I shot the rifle and was impressed. It was my first time shooting a triple 2 and he loaded his hand loads hot but went beyond by filling the case full of powder. Why I don't know. Any round has a maximum pressure threshold and extra powder is just wasted. No more velocity or range can be gained by overloading a case beyond that threshold but he thought different wanting to squeeze out more than the round was capable of. Anyway I liked the rifle and the round so that led to me getting my own triple 2 in a Remington 700 BDL. This was back in the late 80s or early 90s. The triple 2 is very capable of taking deer and has taken a lot of them. Shot placement is the key though with the right bullet types. With the accuracy of the triple 2 that degree of pinpoint accuracy is not a problem so long as the shooter does their part.
I think the deuce is a fairly forgiving round, It will work with a lot of different powders. With this barrel, I have settled on 23gr of Benchmark & a 50gr V-Max for dog shooting. With a 1-14" twist, the 40gr V-Max hold a tighter group, but I've killed grass rats out close to 500 yards with the 50gr.
I've had a half a dozen rifles in 222 Remington: Model 700s, Sako Deluxes with custom barrel, Anschutz Model 64, 2 Sako Finnbears etc. If you're going to put a custom barrel on a 222 Rem, a 1:12" twist is advisable or even slight faster. Because of the lower velocity, you're limited to 50 grain jacketed varmint bullets for top accuracy with factory 1:14" twists. A 1:14" twist is mediocre even with 55 or 60 grain jacketed bullets, and it won't fire any of the 50 grain monolithic/e-bullets like Barnes accurately either. Better still, just get a 223 Remington. It comes with a 1:12" twist or better. I've had a half a dozen of them too, and they were all just as accurate as the 222 Rem. In fact, the most inaccurate gun of the dozen was the Anschutz in 222 Remington. The vaunted match 64 action had a single recoil lug in the rear - which was a terrible design for anything bigger than a 22 Hornet.
If I was to live long enough to need to re-barrel the 222, I would go with the 1-12"twist. Same for the 22-250, Hornady claims the 250 will not stabilize the 53gr V-Max with a 1-14" twist. I have two 22-250s, one will shoot the 53gr and one will not. It's a crap shoot with the 1-14.
You Sir I’ve noticed from careful analysis of a significant amount of your commentary to fellow firearm enthusiasts here on YT - you prefer to project yourself as some sort of authority absolute I would like to point out for all of CDs and many other persons working hard to kindly share their knowledge and experience with our colleagues - that your autocratic, autocratic, authoritarian ‘power and control’ originated philosophies do not resonate and truly ‘hold water’ with genuine persons able to consider and think themselves A polite consideration would be for you to keep your fucking unsolicited opinions to yourself Sir And thereby prevent the vast majority of those us who prefer to foster a positive, open-minded and encouraging atmosphere toward our fellow firearm enthusiasts from missing out on the respected expertise of guys like CD1959 being tainted by non-collaborative self appointed authoritarians such as your fucking self Best to you CD from a long time reader of your YT material from sunny Tasmania Australia
@@tonypurton3135 A polite consideration would be for you to criticize the content of what I said. But of course, you can't. Which is why you resort to insult and derision. RU-vid Comments don't require solicitation. Sir!
@@willbranson3216 I own an Anschutz 1532 in .222 Rem and an Anschutz 1432 in .22 Hornet. Both are glass bledded and both have custom trigger jobs. Every bullet with the .222 Rem will be touching on paper at 100 yards. Penny sized groups with a fixed-4 Weaver scope. The .22 Hornet is almost just as accurate. My uncle who needed money at the time sold them to me. The 222 Rem was starting to get a little heavy for him but he wants the Hornet back someday. Some of the most accurate rifles I've ever known! Maybe you got a bad one.
@@daynknight6654 Well, good for you. You're a better man than me. And good for me because I followed my gunsmith's advice, and dumped it for a Sako Deluxe in 222 Rem. Looked a lot better and shot better too. And didn't have to send it back to Germany for warranty service. (I'm not kidding!)
first elk I ever dropped in it's tracks was with a 222. I tell the story at work and nobody believes me. (OH Well) Most of them say there is no such thing as a 222. also WTF!
government deer shooters in New Zealand used them in the 1960s most would go back to the hut each night, say they shot at 7 or 8 deer & got none.. but when they learnt to head ,neck shoot they got plenty of tails on there belt .My mate stuck with the BSA .303 S.M.L.E as it had a 10 shot mag & all huts had army surplus ammo ..
Great video. Is the 222 remington cartridge so much louder than the 22 hornet? I was thinking of changing but the 222 rem is so accurate it seems a shame to change it. I also tried20 grains of H4895 with a 45 grain Sierra hornet bullet at 2510fps. My first four shots were half an inch wide and one flyer 0.7 inch above the other three at 85 yards(long paces)So it is almost a hornet anyway.I am using a CZ527 which I got in 1997, I think. How time flies!
+Rod Mac No one said you could only have just one, I have both and I will never part with ether of them again. I just mounted a Meopta 6x18 on my .222, 3 shot groups at .260" -- .300" Prairie rats beware. Been slow getting anything out on my hornet but I am going with the 35gr. V-MAX at just over 3000fps-- same load I used when I had a CZ 527 at 2980fps.
+cavedweller1959 Not quite the case in the UK. If it overlaps then it is a no go! I I tend to keep my 222 below 3000 fps and it is great for fox and barrel life is not an issue. I just wondered if the 22 hornet was a good deal quieter than the 222 rem. If so, then I could fit a moderator. I feel that 3000 fps is best for every caliber, and increase bullet weight if you are after bigger game.I was shooting with my back against a fence stab and the group was 0 .45 horizontal by 0.7 inch high. so not too bad for practical shooting purposes. Sorry you sold your cz527 you made a great job of bedding that action.
+Rod Mac I run my hornet on less than 1/2 the powder as the .222 so it is a lot quieter. I tend to agree with your less than 3000 fps statement With one exception, My coyote rifle, I Mostly use a 22-250 with a hornady 55gr. V-MAX at 3500 fps. On Close range, called in shots, I have never had a exit hole to sew shut and that extra 500 fps is worth gold when they hang up at 400+ yards on the open prairie. I shot the barrel out of this rifle with 50 & 55gr SX hornady bullets at around 2700-2800 fps, Took over 1/2 my life to do it and I never once had a critter complain the round was too slow. Thanks For Watching. P.S. Our red fox is an import from your world, Thanks--I no longer shoot them, So good looking and fun to watch.
+cavedweller1959 I can totally understand why you shoot coyotes. They seem to be very aggressive. I don't shoot so many foxes either. They are very beautiful to see especially if they are fiery looking depending on the sunlight and pelt condition.Lucky if I shoot more than a couple per year! Still the shepherds hate them generally. I reckon at 400 yards + you would need the extra speed from your 22/250.
The dove tail on the BSA action is a 19mm, It's European, go figure. Warne makes rings for the CZ 550--19mm--they will have a lug on the bottom of 1 ring that fits into a notch cut into the top of the CZ action for recoil control. Clamp the ring in a vice & file the lug off, it's soft and easy to file. Mine are for a 30mm scope tube, they are medium height and I have maybe 3/16" between the scope and barrel. Excellent set up. link to Optics Planet--------www.opticsplanet.com/s/19mm-rings Thanks for Watching
cavedweller1959 Thank you! Hope you’re enjoying that sweet rifle. Mine is also chambered in 222 Rem, and was built by my father-in-law. It’s a pleasure to shoot.
This rifle had a 24", This new one is 22". Round the size of the .222 & .223 holding approx.. 23-27 grains of powder, your going to get 99% of it's speed from a 20-22" pipe. Most tests on barrel length I have ever read about only show a 25-30 FPS increase per inch after your optimum length.
