My Story:
When my big sister, Carrie, was diagnosed with BRCA1 breast cancer we learned she had a specific variant only found in Ashkenazi Jewish people. This was shocking news for my sisters and I who are the children of an Evangelical Pastor. Our father, James, was obsessed with Israel and Jewish culture after studying in Israel for a year in college. My father was adopted and had no idea what his ethnicity was. He would have been thrilled to find out he had Jewish heritage, unfortunately at the time we made this discovery he was already in the advance stages of early onset dementia. I set out to find his biological family and learn how much Jewish Ancestry we actually had. As I dig in to my father’s past, I also reflect upon my conservative evangelical upbringing and why I chose to leave the church. Subscribe to my channel for updates on my journey as I unravel the story!

The price has risen as of today (20th of May, 2023) to $69 / £59. Shame, I was thinking about giving it a try!

I added 23andMe subscription. They updated reports every couple days, I think it worths the price.

Celine I just upgraded to the health portion so what do you think about the actual subscription and is it per month or yearly

If you metabolize a drug faster you might need to take it more often than someone else. Or pick a drug that doesn't go so fast. Think a med that's supposed to last 4 hours for you it might only last 2 hours.

I had previously been confused about what I was missing out on. I didn't feel like reading about it on 23andMe because I knew it would be a marketing pitch. You convinced me not to subscribe. I somewhat enjoy researching my genealogy (using other free sites), but I feel I've found the easy-to-find details and researching further seems like it requires quite a bit of effort. Thanks Tommy. I'll check out more of your stuff because I liked this video and we share a love for the 2022 NLCS Champions!!!

I have the same medication metabolism and it’s actually a bad thing usually. It means the medication breaks down faster in your body. For example, mine affects morphine so if I am ever injured and need pain meds, it means that I need more frequent than other people and the pain comes back faster than someone with normal metabolism. With mental health meds it can mean you need a higher or extended release dose because it will leave your system faster. I haven’t done the 23&me, I did a gene sight test a few years ago with my dr to determine which meds I should be on, and my results were that there are very few that work for me lmao

I just sent in my test kit less than a month ago. The email I've been getting from 23&Me now makes it seem like I won't get to see my results until I subscribe to their yearly subscription. So far I haven't clicked that button, and I'm confused about whether I'll actually get to see my results without subscribing to a yearly plan or not. Right now it doesn't look like it, and that, to me, is a ripoff.

They use to include the filter by ethnicity & by haplogroup. They also use to have an Ashkenazi Jewish filter that included everyone that opted in with the relatives. All these disappeared when they redid the user interface about four years ago.

My advice for those who like me already have a 23 & Me account---don't go for the '+' option, all it does is raise 'anxiety' levels etc. Just have regular physicals checkups with your GP, and maintain a healthy life style and live your life, without driving yourself crazy worrying about "what ifs"!

You don’t feel the effects of the drugs faster, you process them faster. Like it a drug took an average person 10 hours to reduce to trace levels it might only take you like 8. That’s probably what they mean by metabolize. Not neasicarly uptake, but breakdown and removal

I've been considering getting the 23&me health dna kit, mainly to find out if I have mutations that increase my risk of breast cancer. I saw in previous videos you actually have this yourself and wondered if it brought you peace knowing? Or more stress? I'm not sure if I should know or be blissfully unaware
@TommyGrimes
@TommyGrimes 3 года назад
Hey there! While I am at a lesser risk than my sisters, I think it is better to know and make your health care provider aware. Especially with BRCA1 breast cancer... Both my sisters also have the mutation. Thankfully my sister Carrie caught her cancer early on her own and my other sister preemptively got a double mastectomy. Knowing is better because you can take action early. You may be blissfully unaware until it is too late and the cancer has progressed too far. Or, you take the test and find out you do not have it and have peace of mind that way. I highly recommend you take the test if you think it may be something that runs in your family. Good luck!

Great vid! I'm still on the fence about upgrading to this subscription service and now that's almost a year later, do you think it was worth it? My focus is to find other 1st cousins that I wasn't aware existed (matched w/a 1st cousin in Seattle - led to some interesting convos....). Thanks!

Which one is more in-depth like Carrier Risks, Ancestry + Traits Kit, or Health + Ancestry Kit ?

Being a “rapid metabolizer” from a generic standpoint means for most medications - in that specific liver processing pathway (let me be clear that this test does NOT mean you are a rapid metabolizer of ALL medications out there. In fact, many medications have multiple liver processing pathways) - you can be resistant or require higher doses to be effective. So, that is not necessarily “good” because normal prescribed medicine dosages may be ineffective or less effective. Again, we are talking about medications that the body clears via this specific liver processing pathway. But, to add to the complexity for other medications being a rapid metabolizer actually means you can have increased risks for side effects or toxicity (also of course not good). This happens with medications called “pro-drugs” - ones that the liver has to actually change the drug into its active form. Do note that the 23 and Me pharmacogenetic testing is actually only looking for one liver processing pathway at this time (CYP2C19). And, that is only one of the many. So, it certainly is not a very expansive/comprehensive pharmacogenetic test.

Just got my report. And I can tell you, for $185 CAD... It's incredibly underwhelming. I am not happy... And a subscription is not going to make it better. Imo, the whole thing isn't worth it.

Hey I really wanna get a DNA test but don't have money to throw on multiple, I wanna learn about my ancestry but also my health, I was thinking about the 200$ 23&me option that includes the subscription but I see a lot of people saying ancestry DNA is better, what do you suggest?
@TommyGrimes

Both are great. I prefer 23&Me for health. Ancestry has a larger database of users. Both constantly refine their algorithms for determining ethnicity. Hope that helps!

No, it’s not worth it. They are sucking up more of your hard earned money for no better reasons. Once they are done with your report with the results from your Saliva, what else can you get, unless 23&me can trigger the total change of your genes, your lifestyle, your eating habit, your diet, your mood, what else can result in different numbers from a new report, using more of your saliva? The only benefit I can think of is ti raise your blood pressure, your anxiety to know more problems than you know.
