A 23-year-old woman will end her life on Wednesday under South Australia’s voluntary assisted dying laws.
Lily Thai’s decision comes after suffering excruciating pain throughout most of her young life from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and an autoimmune disease.

Everyone should have the legal right to end their life when faced in medical situations like this. If you are no longer able to care for yourself, you lose almost all of yourself. Some people have never had to watch a loved one suffer and it truly shows, how selfish people are. Prayers for her, her family and friends. *Hugs* P.s. I was a hospice nurse for awhile. I have also watched many Loved ones in pain. I feel differently than most. (Was a hospice nurse is the key)

As much as I agree, I think it should only be for terminal illnesses or very rare cases. The push in Canada resulted in depression being a valid reason to do this. Once that passed, it became the number one cause of death for young adults 18-25. There needs to be strict limits.

@@steveatkinson85 not everyone is terminal. By the way only adults who are terminally physical and mentally ill in Canada have the opportunity for assisted dying. The poor do not qualify for assisted suicide and only if all treatments including psychedelic therapy do not help the veteran with PTSD does that veteran have the chance for assisted dying (if the PTSD is severe enough to qualify). The treatment is suggested when need be but is not actively encouraged, the government just allows you the choice to whether or not you want to end your life if you have severe mental and or physical issues.
@njsmkmmsthatsit3518
@njsmkmmsthatsit3518 Год назад
I have one of the diseases that causes her pain, yet it's not terminal so I cannot have access to this. It's extremely hard to get adequate pain relief because so much of the body is involved. It's most likely the AAG which has a broad life expectancy of 6-9 years from when it's diagnosed The AAG is certainly not as painful as EDS on it's own. This girl is dieing from the AAG, not the pain.

I have ehlers danlos. Please don’t spread misinformation, ehlers danlos can be very mild to very severe. There are multiple types. It is not usually a death sentence unless you have complications with the vascular type. But I can 100% understand how the pain would drive someone to do this. I am lucky to have milder hEDS (hypermobile EDS) that just gives me chronic joint pain and some other symptoms, yay me🥲 prayers to her and her family💖
@POTSiePurpleZebra
@POTSiePurpleZebra Год назад
A death sentence no. Can you die from it yes! It was a combination of her EDS and autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy(a rare form of Dysautonomia that is a known comorbiditie of EDS and can be caused by EDS) the ganglionopathy was causing her organ failure. She would have died a slow painful death. People don't take EDS seriously enough. Here I am with Dysautonomia, deformed hips, using crutches and a wheelchair for the rest of my life, and with a brain slump all due to my EDS. And yes the brain slump can kill me at any moment and it is caused by my EDS. Dont spread misinformation

@@POTSiePurpleZebra I have EDS 3 and POTS as well, plus several other things. What is killing Lily is the AAG it has a very loose lifespan of 6-9 years after diagnosis. Yes complications from EDS, as well as the drugs you take to help with the pain, as well as many of the proceedures to help you live with EDS can kill you but in this case it's more likely the AAG. I'm Australian too and know you can only get access to this if you have a terminal illness with 6 months or less left to live.

This law is so open to abuse . Especially on elderly people in expensive medical expenses as family members can easily guilt them into ending things early instead of using up their inheritance.
@MrTigga2008
@MrTigga2008 Год назад
Agreed - but this case there is no "cure" for her condition and she is deteriorating and likely to suffer more. Cost is just one of the issues - what about her own pain, loneliness and quality of life. She looks to have spent most of her life in hospitals and on medication. I am sure her family members love her and want her to be at peace. Euthanasia , with conditions, is a kinder option.

@@MrTigga2008 I feel sorry for her and if she wants to end her life , then that’s her choice and she should find a way to do that herself . However ,no law should be passed that can be abused as much as this one can be .

@MrTigga2008 Год назад
@@goodlookingman4489 All laws are open to abuse. Im not suggesting that this law will not suffer the same. There are people who would need access to the medical facilities/ medication that is unavailable/restricted. This is why there is "black market" for euthanasia (and other) drugs. Its a difficult issue.

We have free health care in Australia so cost isn't relevant. Also Lily is dieing from the AAG anyway and like any other terminal disease in some states in Australia when the person has 6 months or less to live they are able to have access to this treatment.
