In this video I help my brother install a 230V system up in his builders van.
Being a builder, having 230V in his van is an absolute luxury and allows him to not only charge power tools batteries but also enables him to use a microwave giving him a hot dinner through the winter months.
It's a simple set up which anyone can easily install in their own van. Here's the equipment used in this video (with the exception of one of the fuses which i won't be recommending):

We tested it with the microwave on full power and it was pulling 32A on the 12V side.. its a 120Ah battery (-45% efficiency factor), thats about 2hrs but we will see 😅 I think he will end up running the van too when the microwave is going and is looking at getting another battery just some extra capacity 👌🏻 Hope you're having a decent Christmas mate 👊🏻🎅

Bit of a late reply here, but in my previous work van I had a "run lock" fitted, so if the battery's were dropping I could safely run the engine for a while to charge them up. I got an auto spark to fit it so I'm not sure how easy it is to fit, but it was fairly inexpensive to buy. You simply flick a switch which keeps the van running and allows you to remove the keys, and if the handbrake is released the engine stops.

@@redactedcomment709 not if it was inexpensive too but, I think it's probably just a relay that essentially hotwires the ignition but only if it's started with the key first, then the relay is switched off with the same switch that turns your handbrake light off.

This is just the video I need! Top man! I may just buy everything in the description. You mention on another comment about running the van when the microwave is on. Do you reckon there would be any problems connecting the inverter to the starter battery with no leisure battery and then running a microwave? My next problem will be fending off other builders trying to use my microwave!
@BejamVan
@BejamVan 3 года назад
Hey man, haha cheers.. its still going strong in his van 👍🏻 The microwave does draw a fair bit of power, so if you're using it for 4 or 5 minutes defo just worth running the van as it's some extra juice from the alternator. The issue you might have running it directly from the starter battery is that starter batteries are designed for a very quick heavy discharge and take a few miles of driving to fully recharge back to full capacity. Leisure batteries are designed for a longer slower discharge, so better for generally running things from for a longer period. You can buy decent batteries that will do both but the last thing you want is to run your starter battery down enough to not start the van 😅 The split charge relay separates the batteries and protects that from happening 👌🏻 I hope that helped dude and best of luck 🤙🏻

@@igorchuchro4991 Hey man, yeah the voltage does drop when the microwave is running.. this is because of the significant load being applied to the battery. Depends on the ratings dude.. I think most hoovers are around 1500-2000W so may need a slightly bigger system with regards to battery and inverter size to cope with the loads for longer. Would also be worth getting panels for the roof to keep the batteries charged. It's all possible though man 🤘

Hi How would you set up a mobile tire change van with 1500w inverter powering 1500 w air compressor + 1050w tire changing machine ? 24 gallons air compressor gets full in aroud 4 minutes which is enough to fill 1-2 tires , meaning air compressor will have to be filled 2 -4 times per car . Tire changing machine will probably work for 8 minutes per car. 120 ah battery should fill air compressor and still have about 75 ah left after it. Once 1 car is done this way then van will idle for 10 minute while packing tools and then travel to next car for about 20 minutes + can idle for another 10 minute while getting tools out for the next car. Wonder how fast can van's alternatot recharge battery while idling and driving for this kind of time intervals. Ford transit 2004 , 2.0 tdci, fifa, 92 kw i think it has 105 a alternator . Where to look for larger alternator if it can be installed ? Thicker cables as well ? Thanks !

Hey mate.. you're going to need a quite set up for this! I woido recommend going with high load lithium batteries and a couple of decent inverters. Would also recommend a decent charging system, preferably a 230V charger to fully restore the batteries once you are home. Solar would be good but you'd be using a lot of power over a few hours in the night. I could work it out but take a bit of time do a good job on it.

So live feed to inverter comes from van battery not alternator
@BejamVan

Hey Les.. the live feed wants to come from the leisure battery really as last thing you want is it running your starter battery down. Then just charge the leisure battery from a split charge relay linked to the starter battery... you don't want to do it from the alternator as it measures the starter battery voltage too prioritise it. I hope that makes sense mate. Give me another message if you get stuck 👍🏻

Hey Rob, happy new year to you too mate. Its funny you ask as I've found the edges of the bed gets cold in comparison to the rest of the mattress but its not damp or mouldy (yet 😅). I think putting the holes in the board may have helped as it allows the mattress to breath.. also the garage area is heated, so I imagine being heated both underside and on top of the mattress helps. To be honest mate, there's lots of bits and pieces i would do differently, mainly with the layout but with regards to the bed, i would make it smaller and maybe use pine slats instead of ply as a base and also space the mattress a couple inches away from the walls as that's where it gets cold. I think if the mattress has space to breath its all good. I hope that helps in some way mate 👍🏻 Have a great 2021 😁

Hi there, How many charges of a drill battery would this set up do roughly. Rgds
@BejamVan
@BejamVan 2 года назад
Hi Alistair, it depends on the batteries you're charging and the charger.. Have a look at your battery chargers and see what the Amperage or Wattage (if its in Watts, divide the Wattage by 230V and that will give you the Amperage). The system in this video is effectively a 60A per hour system (due to battery efficiency) so.. you have 60A for one hour to play with before your battery dies. If your chargers are 10A for example, you can run them constantly for 6 hours before the battery dies. Therefore with these 20min chargers that's about 18 batteries before having to recharge or go for a drive. I hope that helps mate but again it dowa depend on your chargers 👍🏻

Any advice for the cheapest/easiest way to get what I have to work? Can I get a second battery and charge both through the relay? Do i just have to get a replacement inverter? Ahhhh I do apologise Anthony.. it looks like Amazon have changed the page for the inverter 🤦🏼‍♂️ previously you could select options with 12v or 24v but now it's only the 24v showing. I am sorry mate, I'll get this changed!! You could buy another battery and connect them in series to give you 24v but I'm not sure of the best way to charge them.. you could then connect the relay in parallel to both batteries but I'll need to double check that this is possible. Another option for charging is buy a small 24v solar set up from somewhere like Bimble Solar.. my solar does more than the split charge relay. I do apologise again mate 😒

@@BejamVan Thanks for the super quick response. I just didn't think about what I was buying. Solar isn't an option as it's my work van and the boss wouldn't want that. @BejamVan
@BejamVan 2 года назад
Hello mate, sorry for the late response.. I've been useless at replying recently. The fuse rating is to protect the cable rather than the appliance and its good to apply diversity. So.. you can rate your cable to the max load of the inverter or you can rate it to the expected average rating of the appliance or equipment you are plugging into it. So your 3000W inverter should need a 250A fuse and perhaps a 50+mm CSA cable which is huge 😅 but depending on what you want to run you could scale it back, as long as the fuse is smaller than the current rating of the cable. In my brothers van in this video, we ended up uprating the cable and installing a 100A fuse recently, as his microwave running for 6mins overloaded the 50A fuse and blew it (which is odd as it's a 500W Microwave [500w÷12v=41.7A] so the 50A should of been fine). I hope that helps dude 👌🏻🤘🏻
@whatyousaidbud

@@BejamVan Thanks mate! That's cleared it up!
