Hi John, love your posts. New to motor homing and am looking into inverters. This has great reviews but as someone else has asked can you confirm that the Krieger models 1100,1500 & 2000W are actually pure sine wave because all the spec sheets etc for these models say they are modified sine wave. There are however excellent reviews out there. Would be great if you could clarify.
Hi John We want to join 2 x 115 ah batteries and wondered what size cable we would need? We watch you all the time but struggle technically and would appreciate any advice you can give ( in simple words for us) I appreciate you may not be able to offer advice especially at this part of you life and I apologise for intruding. Keep up all the good work. Love and kisses to you and Mandy xx
Hi John, great video helped me understand everything well. Just wondering how you're finding the inverter a few months on, im looking to buy one for a van im buying (work van) and want to get something that's good enough to do a few bits and pieces and still last. Also, do you have any info on how to fit leisure batteries? The van im buying is just a panel van, planning on putting the batteries underneath the passenger seats along with the inverter, then setting up several sockets throughout the rear of the van and one in the front. Mainly going to be running drill battery chargers, hoover for clearing up, occasionally a kettle/ microwave and maybe a tv/ games console when were bored/ staying away. Cant believe how hard it is to find something online which explains well!
After i see this video and see its working with coffee machine.. I bought this too.. But now i bought delonghi dolce gusto mini one and its not working.. Why yours its working??
Your videos on electrics are just so damn easily explained to understand. You explain everything in a way how to safely achieve something without feeling like you need a 10 year course in electronics to get something simple up and running.
Great explanation now all I need is to learn about watts, amps and voltage. Thank goodness we are retiring soon. Should have enough time to absorb all of this.
Nice bit of kit that inverter bud 👌👍, the cheap inverters seem to kill batteries too! Nor do they last ! ( I wouldn't class myself as a heavy user of power ). 3 inverters in 5 years in my old "works van" ( one nearly caught on fire ! ), and 3 batteries later ! X that by 200 engineers if they too had the same problem as me 🤔, Now in my "new works van" and inverter No 4 🙄! Well I haven't bothered using it, I just rely on USB ports now mate. And kept the expensive ( ironically 👋🤪👋) german built split charger ( from the old works van ) for the "Gentlemans lounge bus" 🤫😁👌👍👍👍
Love love love this!! Thanks so much, GJ!! This was incredibly useful and informative - and as a teacher I appreciate this even more! Do you have a video / blogpost describing how to wire the AC sockets from the inverter to sockets around the van? I have no idea how this might work... Thanks again!
Great and informative video. I am a newbie and have a (perhaps silly) question, if I use a 2000 W converter in my Peugeot Traveller and have the engine running while I brew a coffee or use the Microwave, do I damage the battery or can it cope with the loads for a short periode of time? thank you very much :)
Just a quick question on you explaining how not to wire dual batteries. Surely it makes no difference either way you wire it up as electricy always travels the path of lease resistance so how you wired it your closest battery is going to take the initial load because current is going to run from earth (chassis/ground) across to you closest battery which has the live terminal linked up has the thick wire (earth lead) has less resistance than the battery. Therfore either way is the right way. I'm not knocking you I love you channel I'm just trying to work it out in my head
Electricity travels from 1 electrode to the other, negative to positive. So it’s crucial how it’s wired to get the flow through the battery bank. It makes a huge difference, if you don’t believe me you can google how Tesla wire up their batteries 👍🏼
Don't have much knowledge on this topic so a question for anyone that knows more than me...I've only had space for a 90ah auxiliary battery on my small camper. What size inverter do you recommend and what size appliances I could connect to that battery/inverter combo?
I'm looking at the same inverter (except for the 110v version) My suggestion would be to take the fuse out and replace it with an in-line Circuit breaker. It's easier to reset a breaker than trying to find a new fuse in case something happens. Cheers from the USA. Awesome Video!
Hi there very well explained and helpful video. I have the same brand inverter but its 1500w. I have a question does the inverter get damaged if stays under no load? Or is there a minimum load that it needs to be on the inverter. My electrician installed the inverter and said do not switch it on if is under no load. Is it a problem if its switched on and there is a small load lets say around 150w. Thanks for the video looking forward for your answer :)
Question, if I wanted to connect a solar cell charger to a double battery setup. Where would I contact the solar charger to on the batteries? (Using your double battery setup)
Great explaination, cant say enough on joining batteries as you explained, I made schoolboy error and my batteries were pants till I spotted mistake. I use 4 x6v and make 2 x12v... nice inverter. Cheers
***PLEASE READ*** Due to some comments on this video I wanted to point out this isn't a product review, so I can't say do this or that as it might be different for other products. I have to be very cautious about what I put in my videos to ensure people don't just do as I do and then not understand what it is they are doing. This is also why I removed links to the products featured as I don't want everyone to just buy this inverter thinking it would be perfect for them, it was bought to power a coffee maker and won't be used for anything else. I also want to point out that using an inverter constantly will drain your batteries and, depending on what you are powering, you might need a solar array to balance your daily inverter demands, and if you have lead based batteries this could mean you significantly reduce their lifetime. This video was 12 days in the making, every detail checked and double checked, however, if you want advice or to ask questions about your own system then please ask me and I'll do my best to answer you.
Hi Gadget John on tour, many thanks for your reply its very kind and I understand regarding recommendations, I only ask as I have just bought a 3KW inverter and seen that people earth them to the chassis, just doesn't sound safe as its metal and conductive and in easy contact
Is there a reason that you decided on a straight inverter rather than an inverter/charger? Do you already have a standalone charger for your house batteries?
Hi, John just watch this blog I have the exact setup as you ie batt, solar panel, victron controller. On your recommendations. I’m interested in this inverter But the blurb on amazon says its a Modified sine wave ?
Hi John, Mandy, Coop. Super video and very instructional. You realise when Mandy finds out you're throwing coffee away that you'll be in the dog house...or is that the Coop house? Stay safe guys and keep up the good work.
Hi John, Thanks for the film, it was great by the way. I'm a little confused as I think you mention that pure sine wave is the better way to go & that's the way you went. Looking at the product it seems to suggest that it isn't a pure sine wave inverter?
Just getting my head round camper electrics. Can I run a full 12v set up (tv fridge, lighting, Chinese heater) and then just use a separate 240v set up for when on site hook up?
That was very well explained.. I use Modified inverter with a surge protected socket £100 cheaper than pure sine.. Never had any problems YET.. Nice to have your opinion on that one please..? haaahaha
Personally I’ve used them for years, but whilst knowing not to plug in sensitive electronics. So I’m ok with them, especially if you’re going to use them for a fridge or microwave. However, I’m sure people wouldn’t know the difference so I thought I’d give both examples and save problems for them in the future.
Yes.. I thought that.. Just wanted to hear your reply.. Haaha. I say, If you got the money go for the Pure.. I only ever turn my inverter on for the Microwave.. Every thing ells is ether 12v or i have 12v adapters for.. Cheers Bud
One thing that confused me... I though having the batteries working together would create 24v?..... like the batteries in my lorry....?..... 🤔 please explain someone! Lol
Hi John Am onsite in German ski place and have access to 10amp EHU. System in 2 x 110amp AGM batteries with usable 110 ah. Also connected in 2000w pure sine wave inverter. We are spending the week using 12v except to Nespresso Coffee machine when we turn on inverter remotely the off again after use. The coffee machine ranges between 500 - 1000w when boiler is active for some reason it will start coffee machine but then it turns itself off. We also have aircon on board which I've tested on heat mode and this runs fine, on inverter as a test, for a short while. Can you think of anything I should check that is amiss. Also On our way here it worked fine when we switched it (inverter) on and brewed a coffee? It's got me thinking? Cheers Chris
I’d use the ehu and not your inverter if you’re on site, your batteries might be low or battery charger not up to the job to supply high amps so the inverter is shutting off due to low power. 👍🏼
Hi John Thank you ever do much for your reply. We have Victron Blue Smart IP22 Acculader 12/30 (1)charger and BM712 FYI - I think what you are saying is that if our batteries are not near full charge they won't support my 2000w inverter. JANETTE who like your better half loves her coffee as do I and we are running tests for our off grid adventures. I really like the way you and Greg have teamed to give an all round package of assistance to us novices. So coffee availability in the future with our off grid is very important. Our next step is installing B to B and then Solar to complete our package. So thanks once again for your input. Cheers Chris & Family
Can my wife run a 1200w hairdryer off a 2000w inverter which is off a 100Ah leisure battery backed up by a 150w solar panel With out ruining the battery ?
Yes, that would work fine 👍🏼 but keep the hairdryer use to a few minutes, your solar panel will take an hour to charge the battery after using that hairdryer for just a minute or two.
Thanks John that will make her very happy we have just got our first van an Adria compact sls slid out and cannot wait to go out in it, Hope we have as much fun as you two.
Have you guys got a Facebook account? I'm recommending your vids whenever I can and would like to mention you too. I'm just remembering this now, because somebody is asking about batteries and I'd like to tag you when recommending this video. 😉
We don’t really use Facebook, I have an account but don’t post anything there. Most people just share our RU-vid channel or a specific video on Facebook.
hi john the Sterling Power BB1230 12v 30amp DC DC charger what settings do you have it on I'm looking for a set up same as yours I'm not very good on this stuf i have the same camper as you I've looked on you tube and they say they is 3 difrent settings any help would be great john cheers keep up the good work
LOL well explained, we occasionally watch your videos together, this got the comment "this is a bit of a blue person video" in relation to blue jobs and pink jobs in the van :-)
If you follow the link in the video it takes you to our website, there you click Our Campervan and choose the Inverter option. You’ll see all the info you’ll need then.
Another great video, thank you John 👍 What is the plug thing called that you mention is handy to plug in appliances at home to test how much power they draw please?
Hi John and mandy I know this is a old video. I used the link to below and ordered the invertor from amazon. It arrived today but they have sent an amercan version . I . Contacted amazon who says they will only be able give me my money back if i return. It to them. . Do you have any ideas where I can purchase a UK version to run my ps4 in my van . Cheers
Does it state UK 3 pin on your order? If so then under UK law you can get it replaced for free, if you made a mistake & ordered the wrong version then are you sure you bought the USA version? They sell a euro version but amazon UK doesn’t sell the USA version. So if you have the euro version then just buy euro to 3 adaptors.
@@johnmandy I went to the link then I went to make and uk version . However they sent the euro version . I did ask for uk version . They lady said they will refund it but now I don't know how to go about getting a uk version . I understand about the plugs but concerned about the voltage as I want to use my ps4 and dont want to damage it . Thank you for your advice . I will just return for a refund for now.
Thank you!!! for this. I’m new to van life and it drives me crazy watching everyone go crazy over inverters and AC outlets. EVERYTHING (almost) in your van life is 12V: your camera batteries, cellphones, laptops, drones, refrigerator, heating system, cooling system, TV, DVD. EVERYTHING. Probably the only exception is toaster or coffee maker. That’s it. Also, the max AC power appliance you can buy is about 1500 watts. 2000 watt inverter is more than enough for your one (maybe two) occasion use AC appliances.
Hmmm my Li-ion battery charger for my Milwaukee power tools needs a 110v outlet so I can make repairs on the road. Hard to repair using a slice of toast while drinking coffee!!
Can you advise on a good quality inverter 500w is ok I think? I just need to be able to charge up my bluetti the small one I think it's around 250watt hour capacity. Cheers David
Hi John, we have a 1200 watt inverter, can we simply swap it out for a larger one ??? We have 2 lithium batteries and lots of solar so I guess it’s ok, but not 100% sure. Many thanks
Thank you so much for this video I was going to buy an inverter I don't need an inverter now because I am only going to use 12 volts thank you very much for this video
Brilliant. I'm a mechanical engineer but never really understand the sparky hurty stuff, Very well explained thank you. I am trying to set up a split charge relay and have a small inverter I probably wont need now.
Thankkk you soo much, me and my girlfriend are deciding to join the van life. We are buying and starting it next month! She was scared because she wasn’t sure how to set up the battery, she didn’t even want to do it until I could explain what I learned to her. So thanks for this detailed instructions and for posting it on your blog!
Link all negs and pos terminals. Then put all pos loads at one end of the battery and all negs on the opposite end of all linked batteries, so the flow of power has to go through all batteries. 👍🏼
Hi John, could you tell me what size fuse I should install between my batteries and my 2000watt inverter. I keep getting different answers. Thank you in advance.
Using the ohms law calculation of volts, watts and amps from this video you can work out what fuse to use. 12v and 2000watts means ??? Amps 👍🏼 In the video I show you how to work this out
I’m a little confused. You speak about the issues with modified sine wave inverters, yet the inverter you use is just that. Is it because it is purely for the coffee machine and not electronic equipment?
Very good video that has helped ease anxieties about fitting an inverter. I wanted to print out your blog of this video but it doesn't seem possible from your website or am I doing something wrong?
Hi John, the link on your site takes me to the inverter on Amazon but it not a pure sine wave as you describe in the video, it is described as a modified sine wave which you have described as not very good. Can you clarify if the link is incorrect or if the description on Amazon is not right. Thanks John.
I am so grateful to have found your channel. This explanation was so easy to understand. Very informative and has helped me a lot in making choices for my power needs.
Hi John just watched your inverter and thought that’s the one for me but on advert it says modified is that the same as yours as you said pure sime is better?
Hey John, so when connecting solar panels or battery chargers, do you connect the incoming power to those same two terminals? So solar power positive to the same as all the outgoings, and solar negative to the grounded terminal. Thanks
