The project Galaxy and WorldRazer series has been great. I've said several times how much I like families of ships. There are also some great designs that are more unique. Even with a variety of layouts, sizes and roles, these ships have a shared aesthetic, design philosophy and even components. Whether they are experimental or simply a different design choice, the nacelles are an interesting element rather than being a miniaturised Galaxy nacelle.

Gotta say she grew on me while I worked on her. Probably gonna destroy her in some animation at some point

I think the key difference between the Springfield and the Oberth is that they didn't lace the ship with tricobalt charges.

The Springfield is a terrific design, id take that over an Oberth or even a California class.

Families on ships are a very appealing idea for maintaining crew morale. But I would have thought that keeping them away from any Frontier or conflicts would be a priority.

There is something charming about this ship

With families on board the Galaxy Class it would have been better served as a luxury liner and not meant for deep space exploration while carryjng families, personal and officers. All and all, despite the classes failure, it was still a great class and had earned its place at the Fleet Museum.

Definitely one of the more oddest Wolf 359 ships. It's cool that it was called "U.S.S. Chekov" though. I'll need to get the rest of Starcraft's Wolf 359 kits. Great job with this video.

I love the Springfield class. Its a really cool looking ship. I like the two necks design and the torpedo/shuttlebay pod. Its a shame that they didn't use any of the wolf 359 ships. Its okay if you remove some ships like the challenger, Niagara or freedom classes. But the rest of them were okay and i love them.

if it wasn't for the borg cube making starfleet look i don't know. incompetent? with making different ships from Galaxy class schematics i believe the story of the Dominion War would've been very different. it was still fantastic during some of the engagement scenes where a lone Galaxy was holding its own and providing some firing support or taking punishment for other ships to move in and have a chance.

Great video! At first glance, it seems like the under slung portion with the deflector dish is the “mission specific module” and the part at the rear of the saucer is main engineering (and/or shuttle bay). I’d love to see a version of this class with no under slung bit - it would be almost like a Galaxy/NX mashup! Wonder why it couldn’t be retrofitted in such a way instead of completely decommissioned? 🤔 Excellent video, Triangulum, and great looking model, Vortex!

Another channel I follow absolutely hates this ship, but I've always loved it. There's just something quirky and endearing about it.

There are lots who like to lay the blame on the Springfield and her design that caused her failure in the Battle of Worf 359. But the fact is that this vessel was never designed to meet such a challenge. Much like her predecessor the Oberth, she was met to carry on research duties.

This is what happens when you don’t include a bowling alley in your starship design.

They took their design ques from a ship that was made of pure explodium.

The Oberth's (and Springfield's) lack of survivability was a feature, not a bug. It was part of the reason that Starfleet was so stable and not a threat to the civilian government, unlike its counterparts in the Klingon and Romulan Empires. With Starfleet's advanced predictive behavioural science, troublemakers could be detected and assigned to Oberths..... and removed by accident, while Starfleet _kept its hands clean._ In the Klingon Empire unless there was a war on which could be used to send hotheads off to their glorious deaths, they gradually became unstable. And as for the Romulans they had a culture in which assassinating crewmembers was acceptable. Look at what happened when the Oberth was retired - There was a coup attempt by some Starfleet personnel, with them staging a false flag Dominion attack on Earth's power systems [Paradise Lost]. That never would have happened if the Oberth was still in service. It was no coincidence that ensign Riker was originally assigned to a Oberth, his fixation with sexually harassing chairs had been identified as an issue. It's only because his proving that his other qualities were enough reason to overlook this problem, that he wasn't assigned to another Oberth after the Pegasus incident. The Oberth and the Springfield classes kept Starfleet safe from itself. They provided HR with an ultimate tool.

Let's be honest, the design team for this class had way to much Romulan Ale during its design phase.

I don't think Project Galaxy was a failure, just an evolution that needed fine tuning. And yeah, bringing families onboard, not the greatest idea.

It occurs to me there actually is technically at least one more Galaxy Project design from sort of canon, and around 2 more Trek fan film productions, - The Galaxy-X from All Good things (sometimes called Devron or Entente Class), - The Fan series Hidden Frontier had one ship that was a Galaxy class variant with instead of a third warp nacelle had a Nebula Combat dome . I cannot recall the class name though, it only had brief showings IIRC. - The Fan series Odyssey (A Hidden Frontier Sequel/Spinoff) that had a modified Phalanx class called Allegiance class that only real difference was differing nacelles.

The Springfields weren't IMO any worse they the other Galaxy project ships including the Nebula and Galaxy. If they could upgrade Excelsiors with weapons and defenses to still be combat effective in the Dominion War, see the USS Lakota for proof they could do so, I can't see any logical that all the project Galaxy classes couldn't receive similar refits. It would probably be easier in fact due to the newer designs coming with more advanced shield generators, warp cores, and other base systems.

Starfleet should of moved all of the smaller galaxy fleet back to near the klingon federation parders where there was much needed second contacted missions were still needed to be do even in war. Most of the galaxy fleet could of been upgraded over a lot of time and reactivated when it was timw for starflwet to go exploring again with major upgrades. I am sure bajor would pf been happier working with the galaxy fimly ahip more then being forcex to build 60 year old ambassador class ship by 2380??

This class of ship wasn't named after the place "springfield" where Homer J Simpson lived but rather by an Admiral that found a spring, in a field..... Maybe....

I love you videos, but in this case I cannot help but to fully disagree with your premises that Project Galaxy was a failure, the embarking family was foolish, or that Project Galaxy was the product of hubris. Starfleet responded appropriately to conditions then extant to allow technology to continue to improve the lives of its officers and crew as they continue the core mission of Starfleet, namely exploration. All of the ships across the project were adequately prepared to meet the foes then known to exist, and no one could have foreseen the Borg, or that Q would accelerate the meeting between the Borg and the Alpha Quadrant species.

Ugh - just not a fan of most project galaxy ships. Even this one. The ideas are good and we see that when these are modernized into a Soverign style or 25th century style in Star Trek: Online. But these galaxy style frigates and destroyers. Just hate them. I know it is not your fault at all. The models you use and the lore is superb. But I mean - can't the designers scale a font on the ship? The fonts on galaxy and nebula are small and sort of nice. But like this and New Orleans and the others - its like the whole ship is a registry name.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. The Galaxy class was a success ........ for it's mission profile of exploration. But not defense. Now a Galaxy class backed up by a warship like the Sovereign class would be better selection. The hubris is Starfleet's bipolar mentality that one ship class can do both war and peace.

I just hate the look of this ship personally and most of the project designs. Love the Galaxy, the Nebula and the New Orleans but the rest no.

So if Wolf 359 didn't happened then project Galaxy would have been successful?

I dislike all ships in the galaxy class family gross
