Certainly an improvement to that “old” technology. I remember the single string weed eaters, then the 2 string models where you had to wind one clockwise and the other counter clockwise and you needed an extra set of hands to keep it from uncoiling. Those were the good ol’ weren’t they 😳. Great video! Love stihl stuff.

I was thinking back on how many different string trimmers I've used prior to this Stihl. It was a lot! I think there was a Poulan, a Homelite, a Craftsman, and an Echo. Some lasted longer than others, but all let me down. And I felt like I was ALWAYS working on them to try to get them to work right/better. I do like the new AutoCut trimmer head. It gave me some trouble right off the bat - it wasn't releasing new string like it should. I had to take it all apart and I saw that the string was actually wound too tight on the top part of the spool. I fixed it and it's been working great since then. You're absolutely right though - all those different string trimmer head designs. I even tried one of those As Seen on TV string trimmer head replacements that had individual cut pieces of line, and plastic sawtooth blades. That thing was junk!

Thanks to everyone who let me know about the missing audio when I first released this. I think I fixed the issue. :)

Love my Stihl.... it is an FS85 with bicycle handles. I use a brush blade, tree blade, a string head. (I also have a power scythe head for trimming steep banks below my feet and brushy areas where I need a good clean cut.) The trimmer has had 20 years of moderately hard use. All that I have done to it is replace the sparkplug, primer bulb and lube the shaft every spring. I upgraded the string feeder head to the Auto-Cut last year. I like it better too. For string, Husqvarna has one called Plytanium. It is much tougher and lasts longer. Best of all, it came with a little string cutter. All that you do is bend the string and touch it with the cutter. It cuts cleanly with no burr. You can pick one up at the hardware store for about a buck. Good demo, thanx.

I'm definitely going to look for one of those string cutters! Thanks for the tip.

@@PurpleCollarLife they are flat and just a bit bigger than a Memory Stick. There's a V groove in one end with a razor blade. You just touch the string where it is bent and it pops apart.

Nice to see the fifteen year old trimmer still performing flawlessly. I would consider replacing the head just a wear item. Have a good weekend Chad!

I totally agree, Richie. I'd say the trimmer head is a wear item - and once every 15 years is impressive. Before the Stihl trimmer, I think I replaced entire trimmers every 2-3 years. :)

The Stihl trimmer has sure been dependable for you over the years. Easy replacement of the new string head! Cheers!

That’s a great idea. You can keep an extra length of string in your pocket when running the trimmer. Then you don’t need to run back to the truck to put new line in the head.

Nice job. Also always a good idea to use the correct diameter trimmer string so it does not bind up, which I have done in the past.

I always had the problem of tangled string and broken line....or line that would get sucked back up into the trimmer head. It's certainly easier now with the two way feed. (Line coming out on opposite sides of the head) Thanks for sharing Chad!

The new steel head is going to wear out on the bump feed because it's way thinner than the original you will see!
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 2 года назад
I'm sure hoping that's not the case - but I guess we'll see. I use the bump feed probably more than some people since we mow so many different properties. Thanks for watching and commenting! I can tell you that the original head certainly did a great job.

@@PurpleCollarLife there's a man on the website that showed a different method to extend the life of your bump head to put a bolt on the end of it. He was in lawn and landscaping I can't remember what article it was but check it out.
