Thanks for stopping by to check out some great sewing tools from Amazon. While you're shopping for tech gear and starting your holiday shopping, be sure to pick up a few things from your sewing room!
Hello dear, I just happened to see your video. It is wonderful. I lost everything in a tornado and at 71 it’s hard to remember all that I had accumulated. This was perfect. I’m gearing up to offer free sewing classes to low income mothers (or fathers). God has truly blessed me and I want to share. Thank you so much for these pointers.
I am so sorry to hear about your losses due to the tornado. It must be difficult to get everything back in order for sewing and other areas of your life. I'm glad you're able to share your sewing knowledge with others during this difficult time. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Hi Crystal! I have been sewing for over 50 years and loved this video. I stumbled onto it as a recommended video and now I am your subscriber. I have used many of the items you recommend but I also learned some things. Love your presentation style and will watch more videos. Happy Sewing!
Oh, thank you so much for the lovely comments Diane. I am flattered that you found the video helpful, especially coming from someone with your extensive sewing experience. I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. Thanks for subscribing and welcome to the channel!
All BERNINA’s love schmetz needles just as much as they love coats and guttermann threads. Magnetic pin dishes are fantastic and also a telescopic magnets to help pick up pins I may drop on the floor. Large ziplock freezer food bags are brilliant to keep all of the notions I need for each project together. such a great post for anyone that loves to sew 🥰🤗
Yes, my Bernina loves those Shmetz needles, I tried the Klasse and it hated it. I think those are best for Babylocks and Brothers. I use magnetic pincushions all the time and they are a lifesaver. I definitely want to get one of those telescopic magnets too. I remember my sewing teaching using one to pick up all the pins after class. Thanks for watching today. Happy Sewing!
Sometimes older books have the best info! I was one when this book was published, but the information in it is invaluable. (Girl, I'm 45!) Thanks for watching Judith!
The Readers Digest book is top notch. Two different colleges I went to for sewing, used this book as their text book. Highly recommended for for beginners to advanced sewers.
So glad you showed the Taylor’s ham, my mom had one and I’ve been trying to remember the name of it. Hers has been long gone over 50 years now and I think I need one! Thank you
They are becoming so difficult to find these days. I'm glad they are still being made. Hope you get one in your sewing space soon! Thanks for watching!
Tailers sausage and clapper are used for sleeves and cuffs also as well as ham in everyday ironing. I made mine using wool and cotton and over an inner lining of muslin stuffed with sand. I also have a tailors kidney. That belonged to my Mom so it's just for show. But I remember my Mom ironing my Dad's military uniform using all 4. She also ironed and starched all her fabric after washing before sewing. She said it made it easier to control the fabric in the machine. And to keep it aligned.
Glad you enjoyed the video. A tailor's clapper is amazing. I don't know how it does its magic, but it's an amazing tool. I think you'll love having one in your sewing arsenal. Thanks for watching!
Your website came up and the content was of interest to me so I watched it. I used to have most of the sewing notions that you showed here but I lost most of them when they were all stolen from me. I will have to rebuy most of these and some new ones like the ham holder. I really enjoyed your video and I have subscribed to your channel. I will tell you that I rarely ever subscribe to a website that quickly but I really like you. I look forward to more of your videos. Thank you
Thanks for checking out the channel, Carol. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your sewing notions. I know you were absolutely devastated!! I know it will take a while to get everything back in order and I wish you the best of luck with restoring your sewing supplies. Thanks for subscribing to the channel! 😊
Hi Crystal. I recently made a tailor's ham and sausage set. Wool was too expensive so I used a medium weight canvas for the outside fabric. Been wanting a tailor's ham for many, many years but didn't want to shell out the money. I found several RU-vid videos on how to make a pattern and the ham and sausages, so I finally went for it. A huge bag of pet pine bedding was around $7. So very, very please with how easy they were to make and how well they came out!!! Thank you for letting everyone know about theses items, and especially the ham holder - something I've never heard of but will look into I could really use one or maybe I could even make a wooden one.... hmmm. 😀 🌷
Your tailor's hame and sausage set sound amazing! I've seen a few tutorials on them as well and I love the look of a customized sewing tool. I'm sure yours means even more to you since you made it yourself. I think you'd enjoy using a tailor's ham holder. It's such a useful tool. Thanks for checking out my video. 😊 ❤️
I've been sewing quilts and doll clothes for years but have been wanting to start sewing my own clothes. Like you, I always have to get clothes altered because I have short arms and legs, and am high busted. Impossible to find sleeveless tops that fit in the arm holes and don't show cleavage. I am so glad I stumbled onto your program today. Going to purchase the books. Wish there was a sewing class near by. Thanks so much for the information today. Very helpful.
Thanks for checking out the video Dollie. Since you've been quilting and sewing doll clothes, I'm sure you'll get the hang of garment sewing in no time! You'll be sewing up on your clothes that fit your unique figure. I think you'll enjoy these sewing books for your journey. Thanks for checking out the video!
That's a great idea for pattern weights, Linda. I've made some with washers and fabric scraps, but duct tape would certainly be a lot faster to make! Happy New Year!
This is such an awesome video! I'm a complete beginner so seeing you demonstrate some of the tools was super super helpful. Thank you so very much! You have no idea how much I learned from this :-)
Thanks, Crystal, for all the suggestions. I’ve been sewing for more years than you’ve been alive and still picked up some ideas! I too, ALWAYS have music and podcasts playing in my craft room/office! Keep up the great posts!! ❤️
Thank you! I’ve been sewing a long time but I learned some things from your video. I Iike the sheer pressing cloth! I’m so glad you recommended the Frixion pens for marking. I LOVE those and use them all the time!
So at first I was like “ I KnOw HoW tO uSe A TaIiLoRs HaM aNd RoLl!” Then I continued to watch and realized I don’t know shiizzzzz thank you for sharing how you use these items I will definitely purchase a ham holder and glass pins GENIUS!!!
You're welcome, Melissa. I'm happy to share what I know. You'll love the glasshead pins and ham holder the are such workhorses in my sewing room. Take care girl!
Thanks for sharing this. Really liked the pressing ham demonstration. I may need to invest in a holder for mine. I didn’t even know such a thing was made. Thank you!
The funniest thing just happened! At about the 25 minute point you talk about the Alexa Dot and ask to listen to a podcast - as an example. I have a Dot under my computer soooo, all of a sudden, my Alexa Dot is playing a podcast! Too funny, apparently you have Alexa superpowers. BTW, I have almost all the same sewing tools. Great video, I'm going to check out your channel now.
Thank you for sharing your favorites! Your explanation of the tailor’s ham was fascinating and I learned a lot! 🤯 So many amazing sewing tools that I didn’t know I needed! Excellent demos, great presentation, and wonderful video 🥰
Hi Crystal, I'm glad I've found your channel I've very much enjoyed this video because I love learning and you shared good information. Thanks God Bless
I want everything you listed. I do have the Kai scissors and those are super sharp. Your sewing project list is amazing. Thank you for sharing. I’m going to purchase the rulers and maybe a another pair of scissors.
Thanks Faith. Those Kai's are definitely sharp! I think you'll enjoy these tools in your sewing space. I love all of these items immensely. I'm so glad you like the worksheets. I love taking planning sheets with me when I go fabric shopping, even if it is online these days. Thanks for checking out the video. Have a great weekend!
I loved your video I thought It really wouldn’t be useful for me since I stopped doing garment sewing But it was a refresher for me and and I still enjoy hearing what’s new or improved in the sewing world I still sew but I am more into the artistic side and quilting side again very good video .
Thanks Shirley. I'm glad you found the video helpful. I hope you can use some of these tools in your quilting. I want to take up quilting a bit one of these days. I still have finished a jelly roll quilt I started a few years ago. Thanks for watching!
Ha, I made my own 'Ham'... but I call it 'Sausage' because it's a mini size to use when making dolls clothes. Thank you so much for your great info & ideas ie. the glass pins x
You are so welcome! A mini sausage sounds so useful for doll clothes. I've only made a few pillow case dresses for my daughter's dolls when she was in to American Girl dolls, but I can see how a this too would come in handy for more intricate sewing. I think you'll love using glass head pins! Thanks for watching.
❤️ the ham holder, had no idea there was such a thing! Your favorite sewing tools & notions are the same as mine, except your recommendations on French curve rulers. I’m going to order the rulers & maybe a book. Thanks for sharing. I took a quick look at your video options, & seems like your style & mine are very similar. Thanks again, I subscribed.
You are so welcome! I think you'll love those rulers and any one of these books. Styling garments is just as fun as creating them. Thanks for tuning in to the video today!
I have the cookery version of the Readers Digest book from 1978. It is one of the first books I bought when I got my first house years ago and I love it. You have a really beautiful energy btw and I have subscribed (and I don’t even sew!) ❤
I really loved your video! Very helpful and informative, especially for those of us who are newer to sewing ☺. I got a giggle when I saw your Reader's Digest book from 1976, I have the same one sitting here. Just thought it was funny how the universe does that 😁 lots of love ❤ ~Stef
Enjoyed the video. In fact I already own almost everything you mentioned, because you mentioned very useful tools. . Of course I have been sewing from many decades, so I would have stuff :-). I have never seen a ham holder before and I can remember many times, I could used one. It is just so much fun trying to hold a ham in your bare hands while using a HOT iron nearby. I have k ow about the simplex guage too, and I am going to add it to my wish list for Christmas
Glad I could share some more cool sewing tools to add to your arsenal. That ham holder has saved me from burning myself on many occasions and I just love that simflex gauge. It is so useful. Thanks for checking out the channel. Happy Sewing!
Hi Just found your channel. You are very advanced compared to me I’m just getting started sewing. So glad I found you I really like the way you explain things. I subscribed look forward to learning a lot from you
Been wanting to get a button gage. Always seem to reposition front buttons, at times adding more, ~~ taking out those gaps at the beast. And it's time to replace the seam rippers--most of mine aren't too sharp anymore and I truly need enough of those hiding little things!
Those button gauges are so useful. I always have to shorten patterns and readjust the buttons to make the garment fit correctly. I'm a big advocate for relacing seam rippers. I have busted holes in a few items using an old seam ripper. It really does make a difference. Thanks for stopping by the channel!
Thanks for all the great information. I am very brand new to sewing a I am also taking online lessons due to COVID. I haven't begun garment sewing yet, but I cannot wait to get to that level.
You're welcome, Tracy. You'll be there in no time. Just start with something easy like an elastic waist skirt or the Learn to Sew Patterns from McCall's. You'll be making and styling your own wardrobe before you know it. Thanks for stopping by the channel!
Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't tried metal head pins. I also have piece of scrap muslin that I use along with the sheer press cloth as well. Thanks for checking out the video!
Love this vlog Crystal!! I just created my entire Christmas list from this video 🤣. I live by my chaco liners. They are my absolute faves! However, the wheels are starting to get a lil stiff. Have you had any issues with yours? Thanks for sharing!! 😁
Thanks, Georgette. I've had one of the chaco- liners get a little stiff. I just thought it was me! 😂I still love them when they work correctly. I still love them though. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Found your video while surfing. Good info for all levels of sewing. Enjoyed video and look forward to more. The books are something I never considered and I am going to buy a couple of them. God"s blessing to you.
I'm so glad you found me. These books are great. They have a ton of valuable information. I think you'd love these in your sewing space. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your knowlege. I Like it so much all you have shared us 🙏😍. I am Mexican. I wang ask about if The book about fitness Real people, and the mothers book too. Could I find It translated in spanish?
Hi, Laura. I didn't see these books on Amazon with a Spanish translation. Here's an older book from Singer with a Spanish Translation. amzn.to/2ZcPvSK and this is a more modern one on sewing techniques that you may find helpful amzn.to/30JJ1v5 Thanks for watching. 😊❤️
Hi Debbie, I don't have a video on bias tapes, but my friend Karina at Lifting Pins and Needles has a great tutorial. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vFzOm4dcOC0.html
Thank you . I just started sewing I have a singer 201 E single stitch I just bought a roller cutter and was thinking of making a shirt for my 1st project. I've done some patches and hems. Any suggestions? This weekend
Hi Brendon. Congrats on starting your sewing journey. You might want to start with some of the Learn to Sew Patterns. They tend to have very detailed instructions for beginners. This one from McCall's might work well for you since there isn't a button placket or yoke on it. somethingdelightful.com/m6972. You could even start with the pants as a warm up. Good luck to you!
The pins aren't really necessary with the ham and sleeve roll, in fact, as seen they can be a detriment; if you use them, stick them in away from where the steam and pressure is applied. Another really handy pressing tool is the Tailor's Point ( www.amazon.com/Jacksons-Woodworks-Tailors-Point-Clapper/dp/B01H08RUHU ). Very often the point and clapper are combined in one tool. The clapper is used to flatten seams that cannot be pressed, like leather, vinyl, pleather, or very thick wool. The reason it's called a clapper is because you clap--beat--the seam with it. I use the Crayola washable markers (either Ultra-Clean or Dry Erase) to mark washable fabrics. The ink washes right out. I'd be careful on silk, though. Frixion markers can turn white on some fabrics and not wash out.
Thanks for the tips. I'll move the pins further away from the seam next time. I have a Dritz pointer that I use too, but the clapper portion is missing in action. I prefer the Jackson's version more anyway. I'll have to try the Crayola markers. I can borrow some from my kiddos. Thanks for watching the video. Happy Sewing!
Ghingher dress maker shears are the best. I also have their 5" embroidery scissors, very handy for snipping thread. Karen Kay Buckley makes small scissors with serrated blades great for cutting dog ears. That's not quite the way I learned to use a ham in home ec. At home we used the rounded end of the well padded ironing board. Enjoyed this video. Thanks for posting. Virginia
LOL I'm a complete newbie to sewing - starting from zero, meaning just learning basic terms.. so imagine what I felt like when reading "scissors.. great for cutting dog ears" :-D :-D
@nwperson. Dog ears result when you sew two triangles together, The tips of which hang out beyond the edge. Occurs very often when piecing quilt tops. Wish I could draw you a picture. I don't remember dogears being much of a problem in garment making. Virginia
