Cameras can move in several different ways. Most movements either rotate or move directionally along a 3 dimensional axis. But some movements involve the camera lens or free motion.
This video takes a look at all the different ways a cinematographer can move a camera. There are roughly 24 different movements explained. Once you understand these different movements, you can be more in synch with your director of photography when acting in a film.
Thanks to Scott Lawrence for being my on camera model for this video.

I am noticing that very helpful videos to me have a lot of subscribers, but few comments or likes. Clearly there are many selfish, unaware, or over worked people out there. Thank you this was helpful.

The best video I've seen on this subject. Can I ask - what would you call a shot where it's a little like clock's hands. a) the depth stays the same b) the camera is fixed left/right. Doesn't move from the center. c) moves in a circular motion clockwise so the height/left right position changes, but there is no turn left and right. And maybe this doesn't have a simple name. But I see this in stock footage and want to know what you'd call it.

Thanks. From what you describe I think it would be a spin shot but instead of spinning on the Y axis (vertical) it spins on the z axis (front/back). So if a camera rotates on the y axis its like being on a merry go round you see the world spinning around from side to side in one direction. If the camera spins on the x axis it would look like you were in an invisible tire rolling down a hill the sky would rotate to the bottom of the screen and the ground would come back around the top. When the camera spins on the z axis, it would look like a the world was spiraling around you like a laundry dryer the left side would rise up as the right side lowered and then you'd be upside down and then back again. Kind of like looking at a spiral that is rotating on a turn table from above.

I recommend a 3 axis gimbal for handheld shots and if you want something smoother, I recommend a camera slider. A lot depends on what camera you are using. If it's a phone camera, you have lots of cheaper options for gimbals, like the Hohem isteady: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4L-pSTUkBrk.html. Or many others as well. For sliders, I recommend GVM products. Like this one: amzn.to/3maKghg. They work with a variety of cameras (and phones). There are various versions of sliders that come with all sorts of fancy timers, etc. The next step up for large film productions would be a full dolly set up. But those are expensive and take several people to operate. You can rig up your own dolly systems by just getting a child's wagon and putting a tripod on it and rolling it along a smooth surface. Or you can buy pvc pipes to lay down a track. If you don't know where to start, I'd play around with a gimbal first.

@@1panomotion847 I don't have any experience with that dolly so don't know for sure. Also I suppose it would depend on your budget and how often you think you'd use it. It looks like a decent dolly.
