I HOPE MY SINGING DIDN'T BREAK YOUR EARS. Whenever I visit Osaka I always feel like my time there was too short - and this time was no exception. If there’s somewhere in Osaka you recommend visiting, let us know below! Sorry this one took longer to edit than usual folks! There was quite a lot of footage to edit it down from. We may only have had one evening in Osaka, but we were able to pack a lot in! Please LIKE the video if you did enjoy it guys! It means a lot, given all the time spent editing each video! I’ll give up an update on the cycle after the next video as I don’t want to confuse anyone, suffice to say, we filmed a heck of a lot of awesome videos. I took on criticisms from viewers and have stepped back from doing more "vlogging style" of videos route and have reverted back to making better edited videos (which basically just means that there are voiceovers).
Gotta check all this out when I go to Japan in June! 😍 So amazing! Your videos are getting so ridiculously well edited now. It's more like I'm watching a mini movie than a RU-vid video. The quality is just so good.😲
I just realized, this is the area that sotenbori in the Yakuza games is based on. It's on my list of places to visit in japan. The camera in the opening pan is about where Majima's apartment was in 0 was.
@@sherinodak7 Osaka is great. I can only compare it to Tokyo and Kyoto, but out of those three it's my clear favorite. Like Chris said, the people are quite laid back compared to their counterparts across the country. The food is amazing (and cheap!). Even if you only speak two words of Japanese, as long as you have a phone with Google Translate, you can have long and interesting talks with the locals. One tip: Do not limit yourself to just Dotonbori/Amerikamura. They're fun places to hang out, but still quite tourist-y areas. Some days I would just go to a train station, pick a local line and head to a random part of the city, and no matter where I went I found cool sights, good food and drink, and amazing people. Sadly, as you will be too young to drink, you'll definitely miss out on some of the funnest of the fun ;)
@@AbroadinJapan Please do a movie already! All your vids are just screaming with your passion for film making and your desire to make your own movie! TAKE MY MONEY!
@@AbroadinJapan indeed, Hong Kong in the rain is pure blade runner. I haven’t been to Osaka yet but I’ve been to Sapporo 3 times and central Susukino gives off a similar vibe, as you’ve said yourself in your video with Natsuki.
@@leedsalex cool, I’d like to visit Taipei. Always hear good things about Taiwan. Except from the Chinese government. Shanghai doesn’t really have the same cityscape for immersion. There are skyscrapers with huge neon lights, but they’re seen from the bund across the river at a small distance. Still a cool city to check out, though.
Aww I don't know much about the U.K. (I am from America's soggy Pacific Northwest if that gives me any cred...) BUT I was the Pearly Queen of Lambeth in my high school musical haha this channel is always a good time.
My last holiday in Japan, first 3 days in Tokyo... everyone tight lipped and strait faced. Cramped hotel room, nobody talking on the metro, lining up on the left side of the escalator and looking extremely hurried in a fashionably way. Fourth day, Osaka. After getting of the escalator on the right side, and greeted by a police officer casually asking me in broken English if I had a fun business trip, I spotted a couple making out on the metro without a care in the world. I knew I was in Osaka, and felt at home
Me right now. Spent 3 days in Tokyo before Kyoto and Osaka. Then noticed Chris uploaded a video about Osaka! And lol I thought I was the only one that noticed the change on the escalator!
my experience with tokyo was that people are more stressed but there are still plenty of friendly japanese people!! ♡ definitely more colorful and eccentric artist types out about in shibuya at night for example :) was so fun to people watch
I prefer Osaka to Tokyo. There is just so much to see and to do. I love the architecture. The people are incredible and the public transportation is efficient. It is fun because the locals are fun and chill.
@@tomsfruitstand6821 so you live in a continent? That's cool! And you speak American? New dialect mix Spanish, Portuguese and English? That's interesting
@@tomsfruitstand6821 you're a cittizen of united states of america, you live in the united states of america, and you speak ENGLISH there i fixed it for you save that in your tiny brain lol
It’s wild that “kid” skating in the main shots is actually a skater from who is in his 40’s, from the Osaka Daggers!!!!!!!!!!! (A famous skate clique in Osaka)
I know this isn't relevant to this video at all (I haven't watched it), but I just had to post it somewhere, and maybe it'll be seen? I just discovered this channel, and I'm watching this video "don't get fat in Japan," and early on in the video the host goes on to explain how a cat would double his subscriber base, but he can't have a cat. So he pulls out a plush cat. Plays with it a bit, and then sets it behind him to be forgotten. About 4 minutes later my little guy comes in (4 years old). He takes one look at the screen, and loudly exclaims "That guy has a cat!" It caught me off guard, because I was so into the message of the video and all the creative b-roll that I totally forgot there was a cat back there. It was just so surreal for the host to make those comments about the cat and to see it realized right in front of me. That cat video was 2 years old, so I didn't want to respond to it, but it was just a surreal moment that I had to write it down somewhere.
@@AbroadinJapan is that so?? oh well i'm jusy happy when you upload a video that dark humor and the british accent fits perfectly along with your face, not complaining about when you post videos just a "meme" comment
@@AbroadinJapan Out of curiosity, now that you've finished the cycle, are you back in the UK? Amazing video, by the way, these are always worth the wait.
Abroad in Japan the more comprehensively edited videos are better than daily less edited vids! I want all of this cycle, but as long as it takes for each day to be awesome !
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley USAGE: The standard English plural of octopus is octopuses. However, the word octopus comes from Greek, and the Greek plural form is octopodes. Modern usage of octopodes is so infrequent that many people mistakenly create the erroneous plural form octopi, formed according to rules for Latin plurals.
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley yeah octopi is acceptable though not quite right. The term for a word like that is hypercorrect, meaning it fits and works and is acceptable but does not follow the rules exactly. It is an interesting one and I am glad you bought it up.
One day we will get a video with Chris, Pete, Sharla, Natsuki and Risottoro in one video and I will die that very instant as a fulfilled and happy man.
We visited Japan for the 2nd time in October 2019, I was literally in Osaka 2 years ago today. It was thanks to this video that we included it on our trip. The takoyaki was amazing! I loved the bright lights of Dotonbori 😍 I can't wait for Japan to open again.
You're looking fitter with each vid Chris. Glad you're still enjoying yourself. My family and I touch down in Kansai next Sunday for 34 nights on a holiday extending from Hiroshima to Hakodate. Stay safe on the road mate.
I left America for the first time in February and went to visit friends in Osaka for a month. Such an amazing experience. The hospitality is AMAZING. Definitely going back again. Very nostalgic watching this video. Amazing experience for sure! mecha kakoii!!!!
I second Sharlas comment, one of your best videos yet! I've been enjoying your journey across Japan and I respect the fact that you present your videos as is, not refraining from swearing, indulging the whims of weird radio hosts, as well as showcasing the country of Japan in an entertaining and educating way. Thanks so much for all that
"Drinking in public is strange but quite normal in Japan." As a German I cannot relate to this. If not in a pub, club or at home, where else should you drink alcohol if not in public???
I love Blade runner, but the start of the video immediately made me think of Ghost in the shell, especially with those riverboats and large buildings on each signs with display windows, even though that is mostly based on Hong Kong.
Man this takes me back. When I visited Japan back in May, my tour group and I pretty much drank strong zero every night. Cheaper than regular sapporo or kirin beer but will knock you out quickly. Favorite was the lemon-lime. For any one reading, whatever you do, avoid the passion fruit.
Besides, statistically, 28 years means he's about one third of the way to the grave already. Respect his age! (Don't hate me for saying that, I'm closer to two thirds...)
Its a completely different experience rewatching my favorite abroad in japan videos when I'm actually on-site to experience the best of what chris has to recommend
After seeing Sharmander's raw footage from this day and then seeing yours you definitely get an idea of how much different life looks with stylish edits, music, and high production value. Great work!
I love these types of videos where you just hang around with friends and show around the city and the natives and just hang around. The editing is amazing btw. Your videos are like small documentaries for me. I always know the're gonna be good quality and good content.
I was eating with classmates in Osaka, emptied 2x250 ml 25% Sake and 3 x half a Liter of something i am not realy sure what was because they kept ordering drinks, I was still fine after xD
@@killerpalkia Sake translate to alcohol so every drink containing alcohol is sake, Japanese sake (Rice vine) is basically sake made in traditional japan way and has as you said 15-20%. but they definitely make alcohol in japan with higher percentage.
Chris this is my second RU-vid comment in over a decade. I stumbled upon your channel last month and I seriously just cant get enough! You are such an inspiration to me you can't even imagine. Thanks for all the videos (and podcasts). Take care
Does anyone else smile and like the video before watching it because you know it's gonna be a damn good video like always? -Thank you for not being on rewind this year.
I agree. Pete sorta looks like Rutger Hauer...if you tilt your head to the side and squint a little bit.😋 Great video! I'll miss the "Journey Across Japan" series when it's officially over. Is it officially over?😘
I'm currently rewatching the Journey Across Japan series and just got to this, man what a legendary video! Has to be the best of the series which is really saying something, although I'm sure me being a huge Yakuza fan is a big part of why I love this video so much 😄 It's always made me want to desperately visit Osaka!
Osaka was the first city in Japan I visited and I will never forget it. I was often asked to visit someone's restaurant and had a chance to chat it up with the locals. The people are way nicer there than they are in Tokyo, that's for damn sure! Wish this video came out in 2012 so I could have done this stuff!
A cool part of Travelling is standing in the same spots you've seen on movies or movies. When I went to Osaka I ended up finding a small park and stat down.. Looked around and remembered that Abroad in Japan was sitting in the same spot, lol. Really cool to see it all in person
@Snicker Bottom Super old comment I know but I just stumbled upon this channel lol Anyway, a chelada is simply beer and tomato juice. And the michelada adds a special sauce/mix to that plus the chamoy on the rim!
Been rewatching JAJ this week, as I’ve been home with the sickness, and I can’t wait to see you and Pete in a video together again. Hope you record your meet-up in the UK! 😃🙌
Initially Chris excited everyone by saying that he'd do daily videos of his cycling trip, but I'm starting to understand Chris' style of work... It seems that he's all about quality and not quantity, so he can't bring himself to hastily put out shoddily or casually made videos. Instead he takes time to edit quality work with the amount of footage he takes during his trip.
Bingo! I honestly can't imagine. Biking 40+ kilometers every day, then getting to your hotel, and editing a video for 3-4 hours at night. I'm sure he's realizing now that he can't stay awake past 10 PM after all that biking and is just running late.
Just came back from Japan and I want to thank Chris for teaching me the word OSUSUME . It has been the single most useful Japanese word I've known so far . That and sumimasen
"I was born in 1990" Wait, what?! You are younger than I thought... I had to pause and take a couple of seconds to collect myself after learning you are younger than me lol
I don't like to call Chris 'privilaged' as that denotes he's been lavished with luck. Rather, I see Chris as an explorer who has had a whole new world open up randomly for a fellow not too arrogant to appreciate it but rather quite open hearted to allow it to unfold. Well done Mr. CHRIS! KEEP ON KEEP'N ON! You are worthy of this. Thank you for being so awesome in your Japan series. I truely hope to meet you sometime. Cheers from British Columbia, Canada.
@@kidicarus5627 not foruch longer. We got the news today (I don't know if you're in the UK or not) that we need to pay €7 instead of getting a visa to travel Europe
Shadoe its not saying something for the education in us and in japan, japanese is almost solely spoken in Japan and english is one of the most widely known languages, obviously they’d learn some english. If Japanese was a more widely spoken language, kids in the US would be taught how to speak some. It’s not like schools in the US offer spanish or french classes...
I studied abroad in Osaka, Japan back in 2019 and my preparation beforehand consisted of mastering how to eat with chopsticks, watching some anime and this video of you Chris. Basically, in 2019 I met a local girl in Osaka, and of course, I asked her if she knew Chris Broad and unsurprisingly she said yes and she got me to the Takoyaki shop in this video. Rewatching it in 2023 got some good memories back. Thank you Chris for your good videos, just got your book today and will have a good time reading it.
When we went to Japan last november we for some reason flew to Kansai and drove to Tokyo, and so my first meal in Japan was takoyaki at a rest stop food court somewhere along the E1A. I had no idea what it was, couldn't read the sign and ordered by taking a picture of the sign with my phone and showing to the ancient lady on the other side of the counter. The taste was unlike anything I had ever eaten before that moment. The were fluffy and soft and I got these two toothpicks to pick them up with. 10/10, will eat again.
