Finally a CMOS sensor camera that can provide as convenient shooting experience with flash as those old CCD cameras used to. It's so freeing never have to care about the flash sync speed while shooting on a bright day. An everage Joe user will never need this, but a videographer or a sports and outdoors portrait photografer will definitely love it. It makes the work so much easier.

Probably up to 1/2000-1/5000-ish all kind of small flashes are fine and need no any tinkering. Cheaper large studio flashes have a long discharge time, some in the range of 2-3 milliseconds, that may pose some problems.

I'm starting to see how these haters are form and coming out of their caves. Sony comes out with a Global Shutter that will advance mirrorless and the camera world forward again. Yet, these haters always comes up with dumb excuses on why its not needed. Because they don't shoot 120 fps, that rolling shutter is good enough and that the a9-iii will do nothing for the camera world. If you don't fudging like it, don't buy it. But you can't ignore the innovation that Sony has accomplished. Yet these haters will say anything to make themselves feel better overall. Even when the camera is not targeting them or their work, they still come up with every excuses to show and bring hate to the a9-iii. No matter what you do and how you do it, a hater is always lurking around ready to bring their emotions to the floor and cry about it.

@Eihei
@Eihei 7 месяцев назад
I wonder if that's true. We need to consider that there really isn't anywhere to go from here - the AF is pretty much perfect and more improvements would be negligible. The only things I can think of are ergonomics and battery life. You could in theory say that A9III is "the last camera you will ever need". With that in mind i have a feeling that all camera manufacturers will use the global shutter to separate the mainstream bodies (like A7 series) from pro-grade, high-speed, flagship bodies(A9 and arguably A1). I doubt we will EVER see global shutter in A7 series. AT BEST we will see stacked sensor, but i wouldn't really count on it. Companies will deliberately segragate their models to maximize their profit. Just thing of how long absolutely trash all cheap Canon DSLR were. Their AF was pretty much useless most of the time.

This is how I understand the Traditional sensor readout speed with mechanical shutter curtains vs Global electronic shutter (I/0 switch). Traditional sensor readout is a small paint brush that paints the sensor extremely quick but one pixel/section at a time as the mechanical shutter curtains opens while the Global shutter is a paint sprayer that covers the entirety of the sensor and spray paints all the pixels at the same time onto the sensor while the traditional sensor just started painting it's first pixel/section.

For me the highlight is the synchro speed with the flash outdoors. It would be great to be able to sync at high speeds with any flash, but something tells me that this will only work at the highest speeds with native Sony flashes. Which may lead the brand to launch a series of outdoor studio flashes. From the brand's point of view that could be the most logical and profitable thing. Those who have flashes from other brands can surely synchronize at high speeds but not the highest.
@kiwimike2330
@kiwimike2330 7 месяцев назад
If you can sync to 1/2000 I’d call the a massive win anything higher I’d consider a bonus. If I have to slap on a 2 stop in full midday sun it’s hardly the end of the universe to still be in sync speed. The biggest problem with HSS isn’t the battery, it’s having to shoot at full power and the recharge time sucks, being able to shoot a stop or two below full power really changes the frame rate and lets the model move and work more freely.

It seems really strange that all Sony flashes would be able to sync with this brand new global shutter, but 3rd party flashes couldn't - unless Sony has held back some magic control technique from the 3rd party manufacturers, I don't see how there's any magic difference between them where Sony flashes would work but others just wouldn't. ISO 100 is traditionally the bottom level ISO for the cleanest image - but what does that mean? That number really means nothing! If 250 is the new 'best', then so be it!! Who cares what the number is!! I also think it's incredible that in a camera that has a global shutter, and 120fps raw, it's the Pre-capture that just might be the best thing it has. As far as introducing new tech, Sony has hit it out of the park yet again. I'm still shooting A-mount Sony, which I still think beats so many other cameras out there, but this might be what finally makes me move up to full mirrorless.

When are people going to realize that this is a good thing for users of other brands, Nikon and Canon in particular? It won't be long before they are also doing global shutters to keep up. Heck, the Z8 and Z9 both have such high processing power and fully electronic shutter that their sensors pretty much do away with these issues anyway. I'd think the natural next step would be global shutter tech. This is a good thing, Nikon and Canon users.

Really this machine has haters? I will questions are expected, like dynamic range and high ISO performance, but that are valid questions based on other global shutter sensors. In any case, unless Stacked sensors get far better than today (like reading 4 times faster) this machine represents the future. I don't find the camera expensive. It's the price of the Canon R3 when introduced, and just 600$ more than the Nikon Z9. Clearly the Nikon has a resolution advantage and pro res but what does the Canon have?. For totally new technology a 10% more than the competitors that don't come even close is cheap.

The in-camera jpegs look more than good enough for me.

How long do you think you’ll be able to shoot 120fps? How much time before the buffer clears? I don’t think tech is quite at doesn’t miss a shot territory because of 120fps.
@duncangroenewald
@duncangroenewald 7 месяцев назад
@@livejames9374 Well I guess you are not familiar with shooting fast action - the main issue is that at 30fps a fast bird moves a long way between each frame - like half a meter. So to catch a frame with "ball on bat" or "bug in mouth" ideally you need a faster frame rate, and 120fps will pretty much guarantee that. As for buffer size - my average sequence duration is less than 2 seconds so with pre-capture than means I can wait until I am certain I have been able to keep the bird in the frame before pressing the shutter - and then capture the past 1 second. So half way through the sequence I press the shutter. And even with the buffer full the camera will keep shooting, it just slows down to around 20fps. The buffer clears in around 11seconds. I have an A1 and this is how it works already. And then if I need longer sequences I can always set the FPS to 60fps rather than 120fps. So all this plus the option of dynamically using BOOST mode is going to be a real game changer for capturing elusive fast action without needing to capture every failed attempt.

I’d imagine for flash shooting, you’d be limited to whatever the flash t.1 time is for your shutter speed if you want the full flash pop, otherwise you’re going to start cutting into the flash output curve, and that will also mess with your white balance because flashes emit most of their blue spectrum at the beginning, and shift towards the red end of the spectrum at the end, so if you’re ending your exposure before the flash has finished discharging, you’ll basically be cutting into that. So basically, with the global shutter, you can control the ambient with your shutter up to the flash t.1 time, and if you exceed that, the camera has some tools to help, but it will vary depending on the flash being used. That’s my take on it.

As a Sony A7iv user and just a Hobbyist Photographer that doesn't really shoot high-speed motion subjects that often I don't really need what this camera offers. Only thing I shoot that is in motion is my dogs. WITH THAT SAID, I can see why certain people are going to be getting this camera no matter what. Cause if you did shoot high-speed motion subjects like sports or wild life its not only worth the 6k cost but probably more than that IMO, not to mention the flash sync capabilities that I dont know anything about but again another must have upgrade. The feature I like the most is being able to switch to 120fps from 24 or 30 just by pressing a button. That is brilliant. you dont really need 120 all the time Also pre capture- isn't that an iPhone feature haha .. super useful

It's not about you needing the a9-iii, its about the a9-iii paving the wave for the next cameras. If you were into photography back in 2013 to today, you would have seen the evolution of Mirrorless cameras and the killing of DSLR. The A9 released back in 2017 set the same roadmap for the A7R-iii, A7-iii, AS-iii, A6600 and A1 with its fast Autofocus, Eye-AF, blackout free EVF and so on. A9-iii is doing the same thing as the next alpha cameras are going to have Global Shutter. Had the A9-iii just been produce with a Rolling Shutter, upgraded 10-bit video and 30 fps burst shot, it would have been pointless to release it. But for Sony to put a GS in the A9-iii changes everything and thus all future Sony cameras will likely get the GS treatment too.

@@harryvuemedia5106 do you think they will release a new version of the A1 soon? And definitely with GS...
@harryvuemedia5106
@harryvuemedia5106 7 месяцев назад
@@puckhead1221 No, not soon. Likely early 2025 for the A1-ii. Sony needs to take their time with the A1-ii to ensure it inherits everything great about the a9-iii and add more if possible. I do think the A1-ii will have a 50 mp Global Shutter that will likely be cap at 30 or 60 fps. If the A1-ii ends up having a Rolling shutter, then its a huge letdown and no reason to get it anymore. But knowing Sony, they will give all of their future cameras Global Shutters now. Think about it? A7IV is Sony's perfect hybrid. A7RV is sony's perfect resolution. A9-ii is Sony's perfect sports. A1 is Sony's perfect flagship. What do you do next to make them even better than the last model? Global Shutter!! Canon and Nikon will follow Sony' in the next 5 years. If Canon's R1 doesn't have a global shutter, then for sure the R1-ii will have it. I for one would love to have a global shutter for video recording. It makes handheld even more steadier to record on top of the ibis that is there already. Global Shutter is the future and its here.

Its a great tech for sure, but i wonder if they can better better dynamic range with more development. Base ISO of 250 isn't great for night shoot or landscape, just buy the camera that suits your shooting style. For sports, this camera will be awesome.

Problem with global shutter sync is that you depend on t0.1 times. Yes, 1/26000 is possible , but at the absolute lowest power , which is about 1Ws.
@Benayahu223
@Benayahu223 7 месяцев назад
I feel like this is the first iteration of global shutter. With only 24mb file, max. I am praying that the A1 mark II will incorporate this tech, with at least 50+ MB files and a lower ISO. For the price, I can't justify it, being that I just purchased the A7R5. Plus, the shutter speed sync issues will still exist, because you need to have an extreme high power light to go above 1/16,000.

You said it Manny: "is there going to be a Dynamic Range hit?" That I believe is what people are saying is the reason why (going back to what you said earlier in this video) that Netflix movies you saw have the light banding (and slanted images from rolling shutter). Companies that have cinema cameras with and without global shutters often choose to use the ones without because it has more dynamic range. I don't know this as fact, but that is what I recently saw somewhere on the web. Any thoughts on this?

The only "Hate" I have ever had for SONY camera bodies is that I WISH they would make a body for those of us with LARGE hands...Case in point, my 1DXMK3 body BARELY meets my size requirements! One time SONY...just try it one freaking time!

In this tech right now iso 250 at least 12-13 stop of dynamic range on screen. Thats more than an enough for sports

No hating from me. The catch with the new A9III is the low megapixels, but it will be a great camera for sports and press photographers who does not need the best possible image quality, they only need to get the moment they want frozen to an image, I reckon the A9II is the best ever sports and press camera. Maybe some photographers also will use it for action bird and wildlife photography. I only very rarely use flash and I never do videos, so I do not need the Sony A9III, I need a Sony A7RVI with 93 megapixel or a Hasselblad X3D with 157 megapixel.

awesome heads up on the camera.. 120 fps is awesome to have but will only make sense to people who have the jobs where the shot speaks alot of words who are always on the hunt for the top picture. this camera will be insane at Olympics when competing for the gold... stil interested in the canon r1 , Sony just letting the other manufactures know that if they dont step up in the future sony will own most of the market with cameras, but for now sony likes the competition as it keeps everyone buying and trying. we all know sony is not here to be the most richest it here to push the other manufactures to things that they would of never try.

Nobody says it really : the fact of the fullframe globalshutter CUPPLED WITH the the pre-capturing function. That is going to be THE "unfair", killing feature to those who dont switch to this camera. Now the mere way /attitude to photographe will be/is completely different ! : You can now methodically frame each sports player and half-press the shutter all along, You press fully for a 'décisif' shot and/but know you can now photograph the next player, do them all, you know you have a decisif looking photo from each player wile all the other press photographers struggle to have one décisif shot... In sports those images are re-used in publicity etc so they cannot afford to have competing photographers using the a9iii - that is the aspect I find nobody seem to want to say. This pre-shooting on this high level.

It's a niche-camera for an entirely othe reason. (!). Had they made it identical, but with 40MP, that would have canibtalized A7RV and A1 - despite not their 60 or 50 MP. It's its 24MP that keeps it niche. Purposely.

Glad to hear you saying that rolling shutter is already solved by stacked sensors. Curious about sync speed with and without wires. Disappointed by Sony having no fast focusing camera in the low to prosumer range where Nikon have the Z8 and Canon R6 and R5 (soon R5ii).

I'm a reality Cam op/DP and has done some Netflix reality shows. Most of those and most reality shows across all networks are on fx9/Fs7/fx3/a7s3 and here and there C300 Mk 2 or 3 but mostly Sony and one of the bigger shows I've done has been on Venice.

I am still using my A7r lll. and I think 42mp is like a perfect amount of Mp. Maybe I don't need 42 all the time. but I feel like if I get less than 42. I am going backwards in quality. and I don't feel the need to get an A7r V for the extra 61mp. even though I would like the focusing improvements. and I don't need 120 fps so the new A9lll isn't really interesting me even though the global shutter is cool. to Me the A1 ll when it comes out might be the camera that finally makes me get a new camera. but I am starting to get pissed at Sony because they dumb down 3rd party glass. limiting it to 15 fps. not allowing it to have focus breathing compensation. not allowing the new Sigma 70/200 f2.8 to use the Sony Teleconverter even though it fits on the lens. and I feel like Sony owes allot to 3rd party glass manufactures because the high quality 3rd party glass options at lower prices is what is making allot of Canon and Nikon Shooters switch to Sony. and I don't think Sony should keep doing these restrictions in there software on 3rd party glass just to keep people buying there Sony glass. and I really don't think it will effect Sony glass sales that much to lift the restrictions in there software. I think the A9lll with the 120 fps pushed me over the edge. even though I'm not looking to buy the camera. because its a $6000 dollar camera and it shoots 120 fps. but with 3rd party glass only 15 fps. I think when the A9 shot 20 fps. it didn't matter much that 3rd party glass was capped at 15 fps. but with the A9lll I think it does matter. they should at leas lift the cap for the A9lll to 60fps for 3rd party glass. even if the glass itself can't keep up. it should be up to the user. not artificially capped. as far as the global sensor. I am wondering if it is going to be put in other cameras. or if the A9lll is going to be it. or maybe they will make the A7S4 a global shutter camera for video. but I don't really see this sensor going into cheaper cameras right now. but maybe in a few years. and other than the next A1. I will be keeping my eyes open to see how good the next Canon R5 ll is going to be. if Sony is going to dumb down 3rd party glass. and push me to buy the GM glass. then maybe I will just spend the Money for the L glass. or go back to Nikon and buy that beautiful new Plena 135 lens. I'm still weighing my options. I don't feel like I need to be loyal to one camera brand. even though Sony was the company to give me a mirrorless full frame camera. which I wanted even before I bought my Canon 5Dlll many years ago. after trying the first Olympus OMD EM5 in 2012. but I have owned Nikon, Canon and Sony. so which ever company gives me what I am looking for. and also doesn't intentionally limit their products I am going to go to that company.

As a video shooter who travels and does documentary style work internationally, its huge from me not to have to worry about flicker or banding w the global shutter walking thru cities where the lighting is random neon or LED or florescent etc. plus no wobble or artifacts for rolling shutter. That’s the main thing I care about.

What I have always liked about the A9 was it being a special tool for special applications. The first A9 was revolutionary in its electronic shutter burst rate with its stacked sensor as well. Had drawbacks as well, but the sports photographer did not care about it not having picture profiles or similar. The A9 III is another advancement of camera technology and I think it is awesome to see a new step forward in technology.
@nickwilliams7867

I do think there is room now in Sonys Stacked line up for a third camera. Something to compete with the Z8 in price let's call it an A8 with 33MP stacked sensor 30fps, in the body of the A9III, no mechanical shutter with flash in silent. There are many wedding and event photographers who can not afford two $6000 cameras along with many amateur bird and wildlife photographs who again, $6000 is just too much. As you said, this is a niche camera and I'm not sure niche cameras will be a top seller.

I don’t know why this camera gets hate. It’s an Olympics camera, just like all the famous sports cameras (A9 series, Nikon D6, Canon 1D etc). So yea of course it’s expensive. Global shutter is wild and as that ages and trickles down that’s going to bid farewell to the mechanical shutter.

Sounds like a nice base for an a1 II 😊.. Although I feel like the global shutter may stay as an “a9 feature only”for a couple more years.. it’s the one feature that separates it and will really answer that question for the last few years of “what’s the use of an a9 now that the a1 is out?

The thing I find funny about haters is honestly who gives the f B popular photography Bobby down the block hates your camera. Bobby can go f off lol. Maybe there are some photo circles where everybody's sitting around you know gigging on each other's cameras and saying yo your brand sucks your brand sucks Maybe that exists somewhere but not in my reality.
