Great video. I'm a tenor but always admired basses. Can instantly tell a bass by the speaking voice lol.

Great lesson and demonstration! I think you see singers singing with a big open mouth in their middle register because they are trying to add more emphasis, when they are lyrical singers, singing dramatic repertoire. They are trying to create a bigger sound that they don’t have naturally. You see it very often with lyric baritones singing repertoire for dramatic baritones, or with baritones trying to sing bass repertoire. Or with lyric tenors singing dramatic tenor repertoire, and of course light sopranos trying to sing dramatic roles.

you are quite right. A large open mouth in the middle register looses focus and indeed, an attempt to make the voice sound darker, This is incorrect.

I find my larynx rises as soon as i sing any note, even low notes. I am some form of light baritone, and my highest note is stuck at E flat sadly.

try and start off with s relaxed Yawn position ....keeping this as you go higher. It takes quite a bit of practice.
