Michael Trimble Vocal Method "The Only Correct OPEN THROAT" 

This man is the last of the great teachers of singing in the bel canto vocal style. He is the only teacher in the world today who teaches singers to sing from the neck down instead of from the neck up. He teaches breathing as the solution to every problem that can happen vocally to a singer. He teaches that actions in the throat, such as opening the throat or raising the soft palate, must only occur as reactions to breathing and never as movements that are independent of the inhalation process. He studied only with professional singers who had long careers as performers of major operatic roles in the largest theaters in the world. His teachers were mack harrell, who switched him from singing as a basso to singing as a tenor. Next was olga ryss. Then he studied with richard tucker, fredreick dahlberg, lauritz melchior, helge rosvaenge, and mario del monaco. He also had a few lessons and a lot of discussions about how to sing with giovavvi martinelli, jussi bjoerling, fritz wunderlich, dame joan sutherland, and countless other famous singers. Trimble is unique in several ways in that he will not reveal who has studied with him, although some of the most famous singers in the world sent hiim students. George london and jerome hines, dame joan sutherland and richard bonynge recomended him as the only teacher who could teach the bel canto method. Dick marzollo, first coach at the metropolitan opera, sent a few singers to trimble to learn how to sing a true legato. Because a trimble tenor student sang so beautifully in his master class in 1979 at juilard, pavarotti sent two tenors to the great maestro. Trimble is now in his eighties and is still teaching full time on skype, having adapted perfectly to a new, modern approach to carrying on the imense, encyclopedic knowledge that makes him without peer the greatest singing teacher since giovanni lamperti.

I am just relieved that I discovered this kind of singing through another professor of singing. This is the only way to do it if you want to be heard above the orchestra and still feel that you have voice and energy to spare. And you could sing like this even with a cold.

Hallelujah ! I teach this from my practice in Cambridge, UK. Admittedly, I came to it later than I would have liked, but it came from a Spanish tenor who knew what he was talking about. You have no idea how difficult a job it is when you are knee high in itty bitty mosquito voices invading choral music in Cambridge, and it's considered good singing ! So very relieved to have found this channel.

Mr. Michael, thank you for the AMAZING lesson. I am a Byzantine Music singer and the open throat is something used even today in the traditional Greek Patriarchal way of singing. I've been really suffering to find to CORRECT way to do it and I must say this lesson is truly beyond any doubt the ONLY way to go.

How refreshing to have found another incredible singing teacher aside from the one that I already have. Thank you Mr. Trimble. If I might just add that for those in Ontario, Canada, Mr. Tom Schilling, who is of the same vintage as Mr Trimble, teaches an almost identical philosophy. I have never sung so freely. If classical singers followed this wonderfully, much more simple and natural technique,, we would have many more beautiful singers with many more individual sounds, which would make watching opera more entertaining. Instead, we get the loud wooly forced sounds of the “new” technique that makes all singers sound the same…I’m afraid often like strained fog horns.

I did all the SP lifting, larynx lowering, forward pinching rubbish you say to avoid. Then i threw it out and worked this out myself. It just FEELS right. Uppy-downy. Vertical yet lifted. It would have been quicker with your help tho.

Really enjoying the practical points and clarity of your instruction! My mother was an opera singer back in the 40s and 50s and taught her 4 children to sing correctly, turned us into a singing group. I now teach and am a recording artist, but as I peruse the varied advisory videos out there, the plethora of tips can lead us away from the basics of singing and into fighting our own voices. Loving what these practical and basic instructions are doing for me as I try them in the moment. Real good stuff! THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOS!!

Great video Michael ! What should we do with all of the Melochi - ites / audiophiles who have never studied , or sang in church ? I love Corelli , Caruso , Del Monaco etc. they never mention Frank Volker , Max Lorenz , Wolfgang Windgassen , or the great Set Svanholm who all had and sang the incredible Seigfried ‘s High C . One mentioned Sergi Lemoshev . They are all frustrated singers , and record collectors .

He is actually right because most teachers would tell their singers to use the “reverse microphone technique” where the sound is all the way in the back with a raise soft pallet and the mouth barely opened and it makes it so hard to sing that way whereas in here that space is actually both in the throat and in the front as well the space in the throat is what really make the resonance! Now how tell your teacher about this as he is opposed to the mouth being open in the front

Yes. This. That soft palate has limits. it is okay for a good, solid, covered F4 like the OOO in Una Furtiva Lagrima but it is dogshit for the C5-B5 in Journey´s Oh, Sherrie! I can rip higher but the soft palate wants to blow out up my nose. Bad deal. I actually sang the F5-F#5 in ´´Dream On´´ driving to town today, not that it sounded like Steve. My uvula was wanting to come out of my nose and I might have cracked the sunroof. I am going to give the T throat thing a try.
