24 Valve Cummins Charging System explained. Overcharging, undercharging, Alternator issues

I'm curious if anyone with this charging problem had it affect the automatic transmission torque converter engage & disengage wile driving, also having this problem intensify in wet weather?

That's what happened to us today. The passenger side battery ended up overheating boiling the sulfuric acid and spewing sulfuric steam. Glad the battery did not blowup. The check gauges warning light came on, then notice the volt meter reading half of what it normally does. Confused and concerned as we continued on, all the while noticing volt gauge gradually dropping until it was slightly above the red line. We were thinking the alternator quit working. So we turned around hoping to get back home on whatever power was left in the battery. We made home to find the passenger side battery spewing sulfur smelling steam/gas. The passenger side battery was very hot. After everything simmered down, we found the passenger side reading 13.2 volts and the driver’s side reading 11.2 volts. We tinkered around which included removing and reinstalling battery cables. Then we started the engine to see what kind of voltage the alternator was putting out. We found both passenger and driver sides measuring 13.5 volts and the dash volt gauge reading where it normally does, i.e., on the center line. So I believe in what you said, in that the driver’s side battery was poorly connected. Thanks!

One huge over charging issue is grid heater relay it will fry everything and have you chasing your tail.

I Have a have a Babe 99 model moral Dodge ram 4 will drive 2500 what a 24 hour comings I'm having a no bus issue quis you clusters dead nothing works except the tank church mission I thought it was bad and replaced the truthe truck's still on the move anyone have ideas?

i had a 92 cummins 12v that has a voltage regulator mounted on the firewall, it was over charging and i replaced the reg but didnt fix the problem , what it ended up being was a bad regulator plug , 1 wire had broken of the 2 and 17 volts killed the single battery.

Diodes, are check valves. They keep the power flowing one way, and don't allow back flow when key is off. Normally in an over charge problem, the cable between the two batteries is usually the culvert.

Ram trucks had a separate voltage regulator until 91.5 or 92 .92 trucks first gen are controlled by the very simple engine Overdrive heater computer so so my 91 Cummins Ram has a regular old fashioned electronic voltage regulator

I have same truck and replaced my alternator and batteries last year, but yesterday I figured out my alternator is not charging. Forums directed me to the PCM. My mechanic is looking into a replacement PCM tomorrow.

Did you move your charge wire from alternator to the driverside battery to the passenger battery?

How about if it's not charging and your gauges are not working on them on the cluster I've already replaced the PCM and alternator and the batteries

If the ground on the PCM is non existent, will it cause an issue? I’m having an undercharge issue on my 98.5 24v, brand new batteries and alternator

dude.. I really appreciate the info! I was told at auto zone... you need to replace your alternator... bad voltage regulator... I put a meter on it. 12.6 on the static battery test, 13.9 on the running check after tightening the grounds
