This video documents the troubleshooting process I went through to repair a Yaesu FT-817ND QRP all-mode HF/VHF/UHF transceiver. The problem was that the unit would not transmit on SSB, AM or CW modes of operation. Transmit on FM, Digital and Packet were fine on all bands, and receive functionality was fine on all bands and modes. The video documents the troubleshooting process, but does not show the bench work (scope and DMM measurements). This repair wouldn't have been possible without the great information from Clint, KA7OEI, and the fantastic information available on his FT-817 resource pages:

Good job, I think you made the correct decision with your approach for this video. It can be quite the challenge going from the block diagram to the schematic then to the PCB to find what you are looking for with the later being the most difficult for me... it is always a big game of where is Waldo. Thanks for doing this kind of thing and keep them coming.

Hi Alan, this video was excellent as it clearly shows the research and detective work to be done to trace down a problem in a modern radio. May be it becomes more clear that a repair can't be argued over a component price which is very low. It is rather more the deep knowledge and experience and labour which make a repair like this possible! And by the way it was absolutely NOT boring! Thanks for sharing and thumps up! 73 Peter

Funny thing is - this rig was sent by the previous owner to Yaesu for repair. They told him that the Main Board needed to be replaced - to the tune of $600. I guess they don't do board level debug anymore.

I know that from ICOM as well. My repair on the IC-7000 with dead receive on UHF was quoted as board replacement for 650€ from ICOM Europe. The fault was a little pre amp IC. So I guess you are right they have obviously stopped board level repair. Most likely to expensive as you need qualified techs. Most funny in Europe is that you can't buy spare parts from ICOM... I think the way you went through the troubleshooting and explanation was great. Sometimes it is just not convenient to show every bit of the repair. Those big schematics are really nice also. Was doing a lot of that at one time. The Amscope I bought is really helping out to see all that tiny stuff. Very nice repair Alan.

There's a lot of value with this video! The steps you took, the fix and having the Sam's printed largely, sure beats printing one small page at a time then taping together, especially at about the same price or so! :)

Google took me to the KA7OEI pages a long time ago as he really has a lot of info on the FT-817. It's good to see such a keen interest in a single radio. Lots to read and think about when playing with this radio. Interesting video but hopefully I won't have to refer to it for my 817 as so far it has been great!

Very impressive. Those rigs including my 817 are very complicated. I lost a final driver but I was afraid to get in to that very tight place and replace it, so I sent it off, so small but yet so complex. W4GSM

Hi Alan, Boring? Not a chance. Seeing parts measured and replaced is X.XX amount of dollars. Things learned from the thought process, circuit description, showing the signal path and communicating with others, “PRICELESS”. Of course you know this. :D) Plus the tips you passed on from this repair. Great video! 73

That's a very impressive schematic! I consider it a piece of art. I've certainly never designed anything that complex, but even with the simple stuff, I tend to separate each block on the schematic and use netlabels to connect them. Oh, and as usual, great video, of course :-)

Another excellent video, my own FT817 has never failed, however a friend has had his fail a few times. We replaced the PA section but it went back to Yaesu when something else went wrong. Sometime later it seemed to have an issue on 80m with strange ALC readings and slumping power output. Over the phone I went through checking the bandpass filters etc with him... still no fault found. In desperation he recorded all of the service menu items and set everything to "average" values found on the internet. Looks like the values must either of got corrupted or perhaps got messed up when it went to the makers for repair.

had similar issue in a 10metre Yaesu rig 19 year ago with a broken wire in the Tx stage. I used a Spectrum analyser to sniff the coils and saw the significant signal drop where the brake in the coil was.

This must have been repair for a friend. Knowing that you have $500k knowledge and spectrum analysers costing $40k it would be cheaper just to buy a new transceiver than to pay for your service. Great diagnostic process showing in-depth understanding of matter in question and preference to using mind rather than solder iron. You impress me again and again Sir.

Most of the real pricey equipment you see in my videos belongs to my employer. The FT-817 was (is) mine. Picked it up from a friend for $40 because it wasn't working. I offered to refund him and give it back since the repair turned out to be so cheap, but he said I could keep it. Still use it a few times a year.

@@w2aew Thank you for the answer. It's good to have an employer that lets you take these toys home. There's some risk involved in operating expansive equipment. When working in Polish Telecom my colleague put an analyzer on a stool, which I did not notice. I almost knocked it down. It cost ca. 500 time my monhly salary. It could have been a small disaster... I do services for friends and family for free and I understand you. Still such knowledge and skills put to commercial use cost money and your friends save some bucks. Very Very Good Alan, was waiting for this one, as A owner of Ft817 and made Mods updates to mine was very interesting as I to heard about the IF can problem and from other users as well, seems a lot of bad Cans ? Yes Clint is a blessing site and lot effort he put into it.Also do same as you on the Drawing sure helps on eye site ah ? lol lol and not having to flip pages lol .Thats Alan good a Good Understanding Video. like always Thanks for the effort 73's Alan

I recently had a power surge on mine and the tech repaired that part of the unit but says the radio receives but won't transmit, trying to figure out 2 things 1. if I reboot the radio will it come back or 2. if there is another component that might be damaged> any suggestions

Logiically i didn't see you shift to either side band transmission therefore the unit may only be transmitting on one side . The question is were both side bands affected originally?

Back when I got into Ham Radio and Electronics Block Diagrams were considered little more than an afterthought. Now with submicro-miniaturization of components and schematic diagrams that take up a hectare of land one is pretty much lost trying to troubleshoot these rigs without a Block Diagram.

I think the video was better the way you did it because you talked through the process without the interruption of doing things to camera. After all, we all know what using a screwdriver and soldering iron looks like! LOL

Any idea what may have caused the problem? Could the radio have been shocked physically as in a fall? Just wondering your thoughts. Great video. Well done. Thanks for sharing!

Not sure - it could have been a vibration or temperature induced failure of a marginal part.

Not a clue. There is no DC current in this path. Must have just been a low quality part, or possibly some latent damage that was bound to fail eventually.

Yes, very invaluable to see the process, no need to see the probing part for me. I do wonder if some other passive that is tied to the coil tap circuit could be out of spec which could have been responsible in creating a threshold rating failure and not just the coil itself failing under fatigue?

According to the schematic, there is no other DC path besides the grounded end - so nothing that could pass an excessive amount of current through it. Just a weird failure.

Perhaps there was something in the manufacturing process that caused the transformer failure. Maybe a roller or guide in the winding machine that kinked or nicked the wire, and vibration over time finished the job. Really odd for a signal transformer with no DC current load to fail. Did you do a postmortem?

No postmortem on the failed device - I destroyed it while removing it.

That was is a really dense schematic, you would have to be careful following the circuit path. That was the first time I saw a smd transformer, looks like a nightmare to align. Was there any component mask on the board at all I would think not. Great to see your techniques for repairing equipment Alan, any review of the new AWG4162 in the future? Cheers.

When you speak of component level checks using a multimeter, do you have to lift a leg of the component? If a component is bad, or maybe even not, I would assume you would be reading circuit resistance via whatever path of least resistance it finds. How do you know you are reading THAT component?

"Do you have to lift a leg on the component?" The answer is, sometimes. It really depends on the component and surrounding circuity. If you're testing a low value resistor and the resistance reading is much higher than the resistor value, then you know the resistor is bad (because surrounding circuitry in parallel with a resistor can't make it look larger!). So, you just have to apply some judgement and common sense, and examine the connected circuitry to estimate the effects, if any.

Great job on troubleshooting. Double sided and stacked boards can be a pain to signal trace. Nice to see I'm not the only one using full size schematics. I got tired of running into town every couple days to get schematics printed so I bit the bullet and bought a used wide format printer last year on ebay. Nice used unit for just under $800. Figure it will pay for itself within 2 years if not less. I also see you use my 2nd favorite mic, the Turner SSB +2. With a little work on the amp board it is a great mic with a pretty flat frequency response. Only thing I put ahead of it is my Heil studio mic.

That old +2 works great on the TS-830S. I use the D104 with a homebrew preamp/EQ on the TS-870S.

Hi Alan, sorry but silly question here: looking at the scale on your wattmeter, it appears that output was actually over 10W, but in each case you say it's just a touch over 5W. It appears that you're dividing by 2? Is that just a known function of that particular meter, or is there something I'm missing? Thanks and 73 de AC2OI.

I'm using a 10W slug, so you have to use the lower scale on the meter, the one that goes to 100, and divide the reading by 10.

Hello there. i watched your video on your FT-817nd repar. i wonder if you can give me some ideas about my FT-817nd. my radios problem is that it has zero modulation on any modeand any band but i have outpot power on am, fm and pkt . i hade modulation for a short time when i changed to front antenna connector but it lasted for a minute .i toke the mainboard out and the modulation came back some sekonds . i havent seen any bad connections on the board . I tell you Dino, It really makes a difference. My eyes are not what they used to be and the microscope works wonders. I had to send my camera back due to a defect, canceled the video I was going to do this week end on the TS-940. I am off for 18 days now so will do some other stuff.

if a modern cpu schematic were to be printed out like that, the sheet would be on the order of square miles

size of features on the order of 10 nm, printed as 1 cm, or 10 mm, means 6 orders of magnitude "magnification", from chip to paper. Side of die (if square), 20 maybe 30 mm long so the side of the sheet would be on the order of 10 km. printed on 80g/m^2 paper, it would weigh thousands of tons.

It is an indicator light for the aftermarket audio DSP unit that is installed in this radio.

Alan, Buddy, Dino, et al, While not as convenient/conventional as Alan's engineering print, I use a screen capture program called SnagIt that allows me the opportunity to screen grab sections of an enlarged schematic. Theoretically, you can enlarge the sections along the paths of interest and work with those on conventional 8x11 sheets of paper. Downside is that it costs $50 but, being a software developer, I expense it. Still in all, the engineering size diagrams are very useful if only they could be stored properly. vy 71/72/73, Bill, k6whp dit dit I

I did the test for USB, as well as tests for AM and CW, I just didn't put it all on video.

awesome video. I hate having to try trace a circuit advertise several pages! I have what I think is an interesting problem if anyone wants to take a stab at it. I run Kenwood ts-480sat in the car. I get interference from traffic lights! I know because when approach a flashing light, from as far as 1000 feet, I can her a buzzing in my receive in time with the light. it's wired in the trunk directly to the battery which is also in the trunk. I've never had this issue with any other radios. any ideas?

I wonder it it has to do with the switching regulators used with the new LED traffic lights? Does the noise blanker help - it's pretty good with buzzing, impulse type noise like this.

why would play around on FM mode my understanding is ssb/usb/lsb are used on an AM carrier

FM is popular on VHF bands. SSB does not have a carrier.

the video framerate, normally it should be 29.97 or 30 images per second. You seem to have a wrong setting in your video editing software. Use either 30, or (if your camera records in more) 50/60 fps. (frames per second).

this is like the 6th video of a Yaesu FT-817 needing repair. I'm sorry,,but I'll NEVER use Yaesu equipment. sorry,,but there JUNK!! I'll only use KENWOOD!! I've bought 2 yaesu's in my time,,BOLTH we're broken right out of the box from the factory. YAESU is the Chevrolet of radios. there engineered broken. THANK GOD I'm a KENWOOD/MOTOROLA man.

I'm mainly a Kenwood guy for my main HF operating (TS870/TS830). I picked up the 817 very cheap because it was broken. I do run a Yaesu FT-857D in my car, and that's been pretty trouble-free (knock wood!).
