The most important part of this video, for me, was where you pointed out that although the capacitor looked fine, the board from a distance looked fine, the acid from the capacitor was already doing serious damage. And Nichicon, being an excellent manufacturer of quality parts, might make one think it was good for that reason alone. Thanks for the very informative, interesting, educational, and enjoyable video!

Yeah that is something one would not think so hopefully it helps to understand the risk of possible damage... Thank you Wayne! 73

In my experience, the bad caps are usually the "blue" ones, and the black ones are usually fine. If there is corrosion on the board, I neutralize any remaining electrolyte (acid) with baking soda and distilled water. I seal any bared traces with conformal coating to prevent oxidation... Keep up the great work...!!!

Thanks for the video. I have a Kenwood TS850 that belonged to my late Father who is SK. It was having alc issues so I had it gone through and recapped. New DC-DC board in the alc circuit. Back to working like new. Didn't think to have 60M opened up as well but not a big deal. I have it set up as a remote station using RemoteHams. 7 band vertical as my antenna. Run 10, 12, 15, 17, 20, 40 and 80M without using the atu. TX frequency limits in play on all bands for users other thanyself. Have it on from 4:30 AM to 8:30 PM 7 days a week. Have a number of others use it from time to time. Works like a champ! One of my favorite all time radios. You can see my Remote in operation on several of my videos. 73 from Canada. Rob, VE3PCP.

Replacing old leaking capacitors seems to be a common practice in repairing any vintage equipment from the 70s? or 80s? I wonder if the manufacturing of capacitors today has reduced or eliminated the chances of leaking electrolytic capacitors given how damaging this issue is to the equipment.
@TRXLab
@TRXLab 2 года назад
Not always there are older units with still good caps. It depend really on the time the caps were produced. Today we still have this issues with cheap caps look how many monitors suffering from bad quality..

Thanks for this video! I have two of these old radios that were my best friends, who passed away a few years ago, and I've been resurrecting the older of the two. First one ( bit newer) was in the same shape as this beauty you just finished! The second one needs a new carrier board, acid from leaking caps everywhere! Seems like if the rig is used often, they stay healthier? Just a guess.

I have had my TS850S for a few months now, and I am very happy with it. But I was told it will not work with 11 meters, so just out of interest I went to 27.781.25 and it keyed up no problems. So I can only assume who ever had it before me had the radio opened up to all bands.

Your carrier board video gave me the confidence to take on the carrier board capacitor project, discovered when the dc-dc board failed. As ugly as what you found, but the job is done (I used multilayer ceramic caps) and it's working fine business, so far at least. Watching this, I realize that I should go back in to swap a few more that *look* ok. I see you've done some, but obviously not all, electrolytics. How do you know which ones should be replaced??

Hi Peter, I bought a TS850S in the early 90s and its display has finally gone off. So after watching your and other RU-vidrs' warnings about different capacitors leaking, I'm getting prepared to go in and start swapping them out. I'd like however to replace as many as possible with tantalum 125 degree. But in your latest video (two years ago) it looked like you were replacing its power board with the same Aluminum Electrolytic type although probably with a higher temperature rating? In short, could I ask should I replace caps with tantalum just on the Local Carrier board but not on the other ones where it looked like you again used Aluminum Electrolytic? Thanks a lot, Rob

Having a radio of that age open, I would also automatically replace the lithium backup battery cell too. (as long as there is no possibility of a volatile DRAM "firmware" memory like the Icom ICR-71A, IC-271, IC-471, IC-1271, IC-745, IC-751/A, receivers! - shame on you ICOM!)

I bought mine new in '94(~) I boxed it up about 20 years ago (moving / world travel) now I'm setting up shack again. I plan on taking a look eventually, but has it been determined the cause of the capacitors to start leaking? is it their age, or time in service (under power), or ?
@franciscolopez3229
@franciscolopez3229 Год назад
For me, I balievd it's both. Because I have seen a video about an old radio still in the box, but the technician who made that video still suggested that it would be safer to replace the old capacitors with new ones even though it still looks nice same as what had been said in this video.

Hello sir, I am Jun from the Philippines. A TS850s is being sold by a friend for 28,000 Philippine peso together with the PS-50 power supply. Everything is in good working condition except for a weak looking display. I have learned from this video and from other videos the common problems that occur with this particular model of Kenwood. My question is, in your honest opinion sir, do you think I should buy it? If ever, it will be my first HF radio. I really would appreciate it very much.

Hello sir,please help me,I have now a TS850 sat,like new,my father passes away some days ago 😢 and now the radio is on my desk.The only problem with the ts850 is that the power output on ssb is weak,70-80 max90w. Why? Such a big radio so small power....I was hoping to have around 120w like my old ts450.even my ft857 is more powerful. Is there a way to make it better? I really like it and I want it but I want to have a little bit more power. Best wishes and Happy Newyear from YO2DA,Voicu from România.
