QC3.0 is the new standard for charger used by many companies, and therefore we get lots of compatible power banks and wall chargers. They deliver up to 12 volts and later up to 20 volts. And the voltage can be adjusted. Sounds like ideal for a Lab or a Mobile power supply. But unfortunately, the standard is proprietary. So let’s hack it using an Arduino Mini or an ATtiny.
The old USB chargers were able to deliver 5 volts and around 2-amperes max. The new QC quick charger chargers provide up to 12 volts and 2A peak. And you can change the voltage on the fly. Sounds interesting and dangerous! I do not want to charge my trusted old iPhone with 12 volts. I assume this would not be accepted as a warranty case by Apple…

In electronics, there is always a better thing on the horizon! The art is to chose what fits best for the moment. PD for me is still too expensive. I think QC3 can be useful for a power supply for the moment.
@TofuInc
@TofuInc 5 лет назад
Things to note here: QC is not a standard, It's a proprietary technology from Qualcomm. QC3.0 and below have no protection for overloading the cable, they just send power. No QC version is USB-IF compliant. On the other hand USB PD is a standard by USB-IF. A 30+ watt USB PD charger can be purchased for less than $20. There are also many manufactures producing USB PD ICs that could be easily integrated into a cheap programmable power supply.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 5 лет назад
In my world, standards can be open or closed, they are still standards if they are accepted by different parties. And a charger never decides how much current flows across a cable. It only offers power. According to Ohm's Law, the resistor of the power sink (e.g. Smartphone) decides on the current (at a constant voltage, which is the case here). No difference to PD here. But maybe I will also do a video on PD in the future. Then we will see the differences.
@TofuInc
@TofuInc 5 лет назад
@@AndreasSpiess A charger can supply more power than a cable can support and if the device can use that much power the cable can become overloaded. With PD they have a chip in the cable that that tells the charger the capability of the cable.

@@donpalmera but then you still need logic to interpret the data, that's a microcontroller, and then you still need the actual dc-dc converter in the qc chip, and the protection circuitry. @@bardenegri21 Your QC charge controller will probably be some sort of 8051 based thing anyway. I brought up that there are cheap usb->uart chips because it shows that stuff is cheap now. Holtek basically sells the same chip with different software for usb->uart, usb->i2c etc. So doing this via USB endpoints that map to your regulator control etc shouldn't be expensive or all that hard. The logic required to make this work isn't going to be in all controllers, so it's not like by being clever, they make it so that you can use all chargers, so people will still have to get QC3 by using only special chargers. EXCELLENT, "Write up", this possibily explains the issue with the LG G4 phone overheating. This occur when I was charging my phone in the car and had "maps" running. It sounds like the QC2 on the device was not able to balance the charge and phones power needs at the same time. It is a known fact the phones could permanently lock up if they got overheated. As hot as mine had gotten several times, I'm suppressed that it didn't. And yes, there is a hack out there to recover the phone if you are able to flow the chip apart and reset it. Good stuff! In your research do you find if VOOC (or dash charge; oneplus and other Chinese manufacturer use it) works the same way? Well, not exactly the same way as they use low voltages and higher amperage to keep the heat away from the phone. Also, I think there is an additional data line in VOOC cables. That said, my initial question wasn't that smart... Still, I know there is an adapter like the last one you shown that converts QC3.0 to VOOC (5V/4A), which is great as there are (?) no VOOC powerbanks on the market or are extremely hard to find - you could just convert a QC3.0 to one. @@AndreasSpiess qualcomm designed this qc3 standard into their mobile handsets CPU. I just don't understand why
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 5 лет назад
Because they wanted to charge their phones faster. Higher voltage means less current. And longer cables can be used

@@AndreasSpiess as I understood lithium batteries you cant charge them above 4.2V? So is this all just for clean high power transfer to the device to then later be regulated down again for charging?

Thank you for making this video. It opens up several interesting paths to explore why several smartphone manufacturers that implemented USB-C, may have battery charge problems that have fried their batteries and internal charging regulator circuit. The Moto Z Play (version 2) comes to mind. They offered a regular charger and "turbo" charging option. Adding to the complexity, they offer a magnetically attached battery pack. The circuit board you made looks very intriguing. Did you make a video how you designed and put it together?

5:10 How can you go from P0 to P1 with d+ and d- shorted together by the charger? Isn't it P0 then P2 and when the charger disconnects the 2 lines it's P1? There's also a difference between what you try to push on whose lines and the result depending on how hard you try (the impedance of the voltage source) if they are shorted together.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 5 лет назад
You have to think without the charger in place. The Smartphone signals. But of course, you are right as soon as the charger is connected you will measure the same voltage on both wires. But as soon as the connection opens you see the difference. If you would supply P2 the charger would open the switch but fortunately would not immediately go to 12V. You always have to go to P1 to switch it into QC mode.
@cmuller1441
@cmuller1441 5 лет назад
@@AndreasSpiess I know that. The question is that you can't go to P1 if the charger is connected and shorts the 2 lines. If you try you will just get in between depending how hard you drive the lines. The problem is then that the charger cannot detect being in P1 before stopping the short because if it sense the 2 lines (connected together) he will always see the same voltage... So the conclusion is that the 2 ways communication is a bit more complex that what you described... I guess with a 4 way oscilloscope with small resistors on the data lines you could probe each side of the wire and see when the charger shorts the lines or not. Anyway it seems to work. I have a few blitzwolf chargers and powerbank and 2 phones that can do high speed charging. One Motorola and one Samsung. The chinese charger can charge both at 9v but the Motorola charger won't charge the samsung fast... So it seems that there are variants in the protocol. Also I think I read the original article some time ago and the guy was not using exactly the voltages he saw when he reverse engeneered the protocol but it was working.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 5 лет назад
As I mentioned, I do not know the exact voltages. I tried the power bank and the Charger and it worked. The guy I had the design from also did some tests, which also worked. That is all I know. And I am sure viewers will come back if it does not work for them ;-)

It's in my "dongle" from ebay that triggers few voltage levels up to 20V(PD) by pressing a button, basically that IC I mentioned + some very small uC like attiny or something.
