On my TS-50 I had the very same problem - an oscillating audio amplifier. After replacing all the electrolytic caps, the fault persisted. Eventually I soldered a 100 nF cap parallel to C124, that cured that nasty sound. Since then, it works like a charm.

Hello Peter, again a great job on your repair work. My TS-50s did easily 180W-PEP. To prevent from overheating finals I made the Fan spinning on low rpms during standby mode and running higher speed with rising temperature while tx. Those radios were solid built to last but many of them had heatsink porblems even untouched / unmodified by the Owner. Happy sunday & 73 de Your Friend Uncle Guenter

As usual, nicely presented video from Peter. However I'm not sure that leaving the TX power about 50% higher than max is acceptable - I hope the owner was told about this in case he was unaware and later on cooked his finals because it was left set far too high. I feel there is a degree of responsibility with the technician to set important things to be as they should - if this rig had been mine I would have been grateful for it to be reset to the factory limit in case it ended up fried because I hadn't been told of its excess wattage.... I wonder what the TX signal was like for harmonics with the settings at 150% of design max... No ham known to me would run a rig set like this, we'd all be happier by far to have factory settings restored to a rig of unknown history - these are super little rigs when in fair order, but they're getting nearer the grave with every year that passes!

Hello Peter, I have to change the leak capacitor on display unit and ask you for your cleaning procedure of the acid on the print. What do you use therfore? Liebe Grüße Mario 73 de OE6FFF

Hi Mario, very often you have to sand off the board clean it with isopropanol alcohol and than you need to put fresh green uv solder mask to the pcb,,, hope that helps.. 73

I have also fixed several TS-50S with same/similar problem. ALWAYS the capacitors have leaked badly. ALL TS-50S are a TIMEBOMB. They WILL fail. For sure

Without watching any further than 1:40 I will take a guess that it is a shorted electrolytic in the audio circuit.

Are there any common failures to look for on the Kenwood TS-2000 radios other than the 455 kHz filters?
