Your idea of using the bath shelf to cook reminded me of an incident from my childhood. Like many folk on housing schemes we never had a car but we were great ones for camping and picnics. We would pack everything into dads rucksack and the things that could be tainted by dads old parifin primus were carefully packed in mums string bag ,and of we'd go to catch the train. Balloch was our favourite place. On this particular day we arrived on the station platform and dad suddenly asked " who brought the kettle?" The younger of my big brothers was at that time employed at the old Buchanan st Station, so he went to the station masters house and his wife let us borrow a kettle. We walked up the side of the loch and found a nice quiet spot and settled down to make a brew and get food on. That was when we discovered the kettle wasnt the only missing item we were minus a frying pan. My oldest brother had gone down to the loch to fill the kettle, we were a lot less worried about things like that back then. He spotted an old electric fire that some stupid person had thrown in the water, in he waded and dragged it out. They stripped it down and dad used the refle tor platebehind th bars to cook the sausages and bacon. Best picnic ever😊

My small story in this vein is the time my dad took us camping but nobody packed bowls. We did, however, have a couple of cantalopes along. Each of us ate a half of a cantalope and then we could have our cerial and milk in our cantalope bowl!

Here in my part of the USA, home improvement stores do carry bottled water, sports drinks and food like chips, meat sticks, candy bars, and the like, usually up near the checkouts. I've even seen hotdog & coffee bars. They know that contractors like my husband make supply runs on their "lunch hour" and having something they can grab saves them a stop.

I have seen similar here in the UK, but I don't think it is at all common - it certainly hasn't been in my experience. Which makes sense as usually less than 2 mins away on foot you will find a supermarket, coffee shop, probably at least one fast food and maybe even a real sit down for lunch time place... The only ones I've ever seen anything like that at were for the UK rather more isolated.
@josephinegibbs3902
@josephinegibbs3902 9 месяцев назад
Why limit the challenge to just the one specialty store when there are most likely stores with food very nearby? How about picking the store you are going to focus on and then setting a radius of, say, a 3 minute walk from that store and you are allowed to shop anywhere else within that radius to round out your supplies? Seems to me this would come closer to mimicking a real emergency or survival scenario. Maybe chose a place you don't know well, verify that there is a shop of your focus kind there, but don't research the surrounding business before going.

14:00 Here's a tip from a handyman. Instead of trying to rip open that little bag like you were, grab one of the nails inside and bend it up into the plastic. Poke a hole using the point of the nail, and slide it out that way. I've done it many times with both nails and screws, and you can slide the nails out the same hole, or back in.

Great job! 😎👍🏾 Get to know the abundance of trees in the area your in. Often you can use a tree's bark to boil up into a broth. Using a knife, cut 4in off the top of your sock, use it as a strainer😉 handheld stapler and bubblewrap go well together, nails not so much, but you made it work.😎 When you know you're going into the bush, try to keep 4 of those emergency foil blankets in your pack. They're great for lining your floor bed (leaves down 1st, then blanket) and making a top cover blanket. For top cover, just staple or duct tape to 4 long sticks. The other 2 non-used emergency blankets are for backup.😉 Last but not least, any structure you build or bring, to shelter you, find a branch that's as thick as your fist. Go back to your tent/shelter. Using the branch, put it up against tent,pushing into the ground hard, walking backwards away from tent about 6-8ft, you're making a trench in the soil. Do this all around the tent/shelter. Doing this is like roof gutters for your home. Rainfall drains away from tent/shelter keeping you optimally dry with no waking up in a puddle of cold water. We all know how THAT starts your day off😝🤣🤪😎👍🏾

Probably best that you didn't have food to cook on the shower shelf. It's likely that the metals used in it aren't food safe. Made to not rust in the shower. I doubt it was galvanized, but many of the rust resistant metal coats they do offgas when heated. Not just zinc

I use a similar knife for making walking sticks etc. You can literally "peel" branches with it! Set the blade on the branch, pull it towards you. Do not lift the blade. Keep it in constant contact. With a little practice, everything you make will be baby smooth! Also you'll have endless kindling! It's super easy!

I know I have nothing on you and have the utmost respect for you, Mike. And just a tiny tip without trying to tell you that you are doing something wrong. When hammering in stakes/posts/anything with a hammer or whatever, hold the post with an underhand grip instead of overhand. That way, if you miss, you will push your hand away. With the overhand grip you tend to tighten the grip if you hit your hand. I learned it from an old farmer and I really like the technique. Thanks for yet another awesome video :)

If you want nails not to split the wood, turn the nail upside down, tap the pointy end once with your hammer or back of the hatchet, which will blunt the point of the nail. This way, when you bang the nail into the wood, the end will smash through the wood fibres, rather than work between them and split the wood. I always tap my nails first. My local B&Q used to have a coffee shop/café until covid and they've not reopened it since, but there are a couple of snack machines at the entrance.
