I think shooting at a set focal length for a day, week, or month (and exclusively at that FL) is helpful and a valuable skill for photographers. If you can do this over, say, the course of the year as a project, it can help you visualize how your camera and lenses will see, and you'll spend less time wondering what is the correct FL for a particular shot because you have will developed the skill and know what each FL can present (roughly) in a given scene. I'm not saying this has to be your primary focus, but if it's something you work on as an annual project, maybe each month you photograph at a different FL and maybe even the same subjects, but at different FLs throughout the year, you can start to develop a mental library of what different FLs do in various scenes...

I don’t know if it’s the nature of who I am but I find myself reaching for 200mm the most almost all the time. Maybe it’s where I live but I find it so much easier to isolate my subject and avoid man made objects/ get tight enough from a distance. 24 is very hard for me in every day use.

Absolutely agree with you in challenging ourselves with restricting focal length. I went out with a 24mm prime and absolutely regretted my decision while shooting with it on top of a hill thought I was missing out on all the details in sky and clouds but was pleasantly surprised to find out later looking at them in Lightroom that I got some really lovely wide shots that I may have never thought of. Thank you for posting such informative and encouraging videos all the time. Will make sure that I tag you on Instagram in the 24mm photos that I took yesterday. Hoping for a quick feedback!!

This feels like a compelling argument in favour of the humble 24-70. There’s always an image to be made in the mid-range. There’s no better single lens for landscape photography IMHO.
@alanmcdade2459
@alanmcdade2459 3 года назад
The 24-70 is probably any thing but not humble. It is big, heavy, expensive. A nifty-fifty is humble.
@jabezhane
@jabezhane 3 года назад
Never seen the attraction of the 24-70 lenses. I've tried a couple and the focal range is 'wide to a little bit closer'. It's why I went with a 24-105 F.4, just has more reach and you still get a nice bit of bokeh at the far end. Works pretty well on APS-C too. However, I've mainly switched to 70-200MM F2.8 over the past two years. Much more usable than you think. It's just the size/weight thats the downside. You get used to it though. Each to their own.

I admire the concept but as soon as I saw 24mm and 200mm I felt that you guys bit off a tough one. I think 28mm v. 135mm would have had a bit easier time, and with the other restrictions (after 9:00, weather, etc.) would have been a little less challenge and a little more fun. But I doubt if many would agree with me. :-)
