I would highly recommend Poison by Chris Wooding. It’s my favorite YA fantasy standalone and it is PERFECT for spooky season. It’s got that dark fairytale vibe I think you would love!

I would highly recommend Picking by Samantha Marchand if you loved Small Favors. It's another standalone YA fantasy with some very spooky elements. It also has a small, isolated village with creepy things in the woods. It reminded me a lot of Small Favors. It's not quite as well written but still very good. Plus, it has a platonic boy-girl friendship if that's something you like.

For YA recommendations: I read Hold Back the Tide by Melinda Salisbury a few years back and really loved it. It's a stand alone historical fantasy/horror set in a Scottish small town, pretty short too, I believe less than 300 pages.

I love all the books by Kristin Cashore - her books Graceling, Fire and maybe Bitterblue are you quite well known, but she has expanded this world with two more semi-connected stories Winterkeep and Seasparrow where the latter is incredibly beautiful. It deals very well with grief and trauma, but the synopsis is a bit of a spoiler. She also has a standalone called Jane Unlimited which has an interesting structure and I don't really know what it would be categorised as genre-wise.

The Winner's Curse is a pretty great ya fantasy trilogy, it is heavily political with no magic. If you enjoy The bridge kingdom or the folk of the air i think you will enjoy it.

Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith. It’s 2 smaller books published together when I got it, Crown Duel & Court Duel. FMC who just keeps doing the best she can with the limited information she has, she’s not perfect at anything or the chosen one, just doing what she thinks is right. The second half/second book is a little romance oriented but that’s not the focus.

I was actually going to suggest Vespertine! I loved that book so much. I obviously need to read more of her work.

I rarely read YA but recently picked up Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim. I loved it, even more than Six Crimson Cranes (maybe because it's inspired by Mulan which is my soft spot). It's a duology tho and I am yet to read the second book, so I can't speak for the whole thing, but the first book was really good imo. I also saw someone in the comments recommending The Traitor's Kiss and I second that. I've read it awhile ago but remember enjoying it alot. Now I'm gonna go give a chance to Warrior of the Wild. It was on my Maybe List for a long time, but I'm convinced now 😁

My favourite, hidden gem Y.A. fantasy standalones of recent years have to be Kelly McWilliam's Mirror girls, and Clara Kumagai's Catfish rolling. Catfish rolling features an interesting world where Japan goes through an earthquake that divides the land into areas where time moves differently, and a protagonist who is dealing with grief from losing her mother, and her father who is experiencing dementia- like symptoms from experimenting in the time zones. Mirror Girls is about two biracial sisters who have to come to terms with their mixed-race identity in 1950s Southern USA, and who are literally haunted and cursed by the ghosts of their past. As I've gotten older, I've been reading less Y.A., but I've come back to reread these two novels, because they are very well written imo.

I recently read A Thousand Steps Into Night by Traci Chee for the first time and I immediately fell in love with it! It's on the shorter side for a fantasy but the world is so immersive it feels longer than it actually is ❤️ A kindle (you can buy physical copies of her longer works) author I love but hardly ever see anyone talk about is Megan Derr and I think two of her (adult) books, Bones of the Lich King and Heart of the Dragonslayer, are a great starting point into her style x P. S. If you want more of an epic fantasy feel, I'd go for Black Magic by Megan Derr ✨

I really enjoyed Long May She Reign and Warrior in the Wild. I liked Sorcery of Thorns too, just not quite as much...Though it is part of a series and I can't remember which book in the series is my favorite. I still have to read A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking but it's definitely on my TBR.

I've got two recs- Year of the Reaper by Maiika Lucer was a really fun story with a medieval setting and The Traitor's Kiss by Erin Beaty was a good YA romance story that is part of a series but I really loved the FMC in it. I believe she is an assistant to a matchmaker.

Jade Fire Gold was supposed to have a sequel. If I remember correctly, there was an issue with the publisher and the sequel will never see the light of day unless the author find another publisher to take over.

Amazing YA Fantasy book series, the Legendborn Cycle. So good. It has themes of belonging, grief, loss and finding your strength and magic. Based on the King Arthur legends, the characters have magic, but it is set present day in our world. Highly recommend. Also "If I have to be Haunted" is a book about a ghost talker, set in our world and a fantasy realm. Fun read.

One of the best books I've read this year was a YA fantasy standalone - In Other Lands by Sarah Reed Brennan. I absolutely adore it! The main character has my entire heart. If you'd enjoy reading about an incredibly funny, mean and nerdy pacifist that goes to the fantastical land with mermaids, harpys and other magical people I'd highly recommend :D it might not be everybodys coup of tea, because it's very character driven and satirical. If you are more into logical stuff and worldbuilding where everything makes sense you might not like it (but I would still recommend you try because I love it so much 😆). Also I've finally read Graceling by Kristin Cashore and loved it as well! It's an older fantasy book with a little bit more of a classical feeling :)

Fanfiction of full metal alchemist you say? As someone who cannot for the life of me get into manga or anime, I’ve tried but I’m useless with visual media, this makes me very curious to actually pick up a far wilder magic!

Suggestion I didn't see in this list: The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill. Darker than I expected, definitely worth reading although I have my criticisms. I don't recommend the audiobook. There's a lot of repeated lines from a particular character and it's a bit grating in audio.

No spoilers but the ending of House of Salt and Sorrows will stay with me forever. That book toed the line beautifully and dipped into horror a bit more than I could handle since I was pregnant at the time. That might be my spooky re-read this year. I also loved The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea and Sorcery of Thorns.

I have a YA Fantasy rec perfect for spooky time! It's a duology by Megan Shepherd called Grim Lovelies and Midnight Beauties. Set in Paris. Witches, goblins, magic spells, animals that turn into humans and vice versa, a race against time, a heist, feud/battle, catacombs and castles, a witchy competition, political/royal intrigue... they are a bit longer but honestly super fast reads.

One of my favorites is the Ascendance Series by Jennifer A. Nielsen. It started out as a trilogy then ended up continuing. I was skeptical at first if the 4th and 5th book would be as good as the first 3. I ended up enjoying them just as much. And one of the few series that for me didn't have the middle book syndrome. ⚔🏹🛡

I thought Vespertine was the best of all Rogerson's books, I think the "religious" aspects turned some off. The story was excellent, I want a sequel.
@giantcupofcoffee
@giantcupofcoffee 4 дня назад
I think it has since been edited, but the initial blurb on Vespertine didn’t mention that she’s a nun, and the cover art doesn’t make that clear. Plus the plot centers around not-obscured-at-all Christian relics. I don’t have a problem with a book like this existing but I definitely felt like I was duped into buying a religious book that I otherwise wouldn’t have bought; the publisher knew what they were doing by not putting a nun or the word “nun” on the cover, ya know? Anyway, I really loved Us In Ruins. Super cute and fast paced.
