Hi Ryan, this is a great list here. Disclaimer: I'm a gal who does CD and SACD. Having vinyl is just because I have cerebral palsy, too impractical with one hand. I don't deny it sounds great but CD and SACD/blu ray audio are much easier for me to deal with. It's always great to see a younger person into jazz, and just promoting the form. At the age of 41, I hardly find people into it. I was lucky enough to have parents into jazz and it was a rare case for a little kid to be attracted to it (and classical) almost from birth. There's a few choices I disagree with and I'll tell you why. "Song For My Father" is indeed a classic, and I love it, but Silver albums I find myself always going back to are "Stylings of Silver", and "The Tokyo Blues". There's just something about the Art Farmer/Mobley front line on "Stylings" that's sublime, and from "No Smokin'" it's just fantastic. "The Tokyo Blues", there's just a vibe created I love. "Sayonara Blues" in particular, the way Horace just cooks on a two chord vamp is great. I'd put "Doin The Thing: Live at the Village Gate" ahead of "Song For My Father" too. For Wayne, this might be unpopular but my favorite "classic" BN from him is "The All Seeing Eye". There's just an atmosphere with texture there that's great. And it swings, it isn't particularly "out" i.e.Cecil "Unit Structures", or "Conquistador", "Free Jazz" by Ornette or Trane's "Ascension" or "Live in Seattle". Herbie I'd put "Empyrean Isles", "Inventions And Dimensions" ahead of "Takin Off" or "Speak Like A Child" or "The Prisoner". I would also not ignore his Columbia output particularly "Flood", "Man Child" "Secrets" "An Evening With HH and Chick Corea" or the VSOP Quintet albums as good starters. For Trane besides your choices I'd add "Traneing In", "Soultrane", "Lush Life" as good starting points. Mobley add "Workout" "No Room For Squares" and "Caddy For Daddy". I had the 63-70 Mobley set from Mosaic (and the 50's one too!) lost both last year in a fire, but the 60's era, when you get to "Dippin'", I gotta be honest, the albums start being a bit routine as great as it is Billy Higgins behind the kit. For my hero Jimmy Smith you must include "The Sermon", "Houseparty", "Cool Blues" and ESPECIALLY both volumes of "Groovin At Smalls" because that album is the past, present and future of the organ rolled into one. I'd also advise you don't sleep on artists now like Joel Ross, Shabaka Hutchins, James Francies, Julian Lage... I think with all these jazz 101 videos on YT, we as a jazz community can forget about jazz TODAY. Don't forget enormously important figures of the past 40 years either like Gary Burton, Chick, Michael Brecker, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Joey DeFrancesco (still trying to process that loss) Chris Potter, the list can go on and on.

Love your picks! Soultrane is definitely in the top 5 for me but every time I recommend it to someone they don’t like it for some reason I think the complexity is still there to some degree but not entirely sure, When making my list I tried to go off of affordability and listening difficulty so for that I didn’t include the all seeing eye(which is an amazing album) just for the fact beginners can’t really listen to it, I chose song for my father since none of those albums have been reissued except further explorations on the tone poet series. Finger poppin is definitely my favorite of his though! I chose taking off because it’s an easy great listen and relatively affordable compared Empyrean Isles which even the reissues for that are a bit expensive, I could’ve went with maiden voyage as well but I know some people don’t like side b since it goes a bit far out, I love all of herbies work though! Thanks for the support! Also I went for more of a vintage approach to my list, definitely wanna make a modern jazz list with the new artists such as Immanuel Wilkins or Brian Blade

@@amanandhismusic Thanks. I can't see how Soultrane is super complex for some listeners because it's just standard hard bop. "The Egg" and "Survival of the Fittest" from Herbie I get, but for me "Empyrean Isles" and ,"Maiden Voyage" are more rewarding. The original version of the album with Stu Martin as drummer I don't think exists tape wise.

Nicely done, young man! I discovered jazz around the time of the “British Invasion” with the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and similar bands consuming much of the radio airtime while I was in high school. Then I enlisted in the US Air Force, and Motown was “the thing.” I eventually met a fellow airman who introduced me to “Kind of Blue”, which led me to John Coltrane, Bill Evans, and other greats. I started listening to and buying jazz records and have quite a collection at 76. Just wish I could remember that fellow’s name who got me started.

I think this is the best video of it's type (i.e., where to start out with jazz records) that I've ever watched. I'm impressed that anyone your age has this depth of knowledge. I have almost all of these albums but it took me many years to get to the level of understanding that you're at already. I'd only add Grant Green, Idle Moments and Dave Brubeck, Time Out (or Time Further Out). And, for some acoustic guitar I'd mention Joe Pass and Django Reinhardt. The guy commenting about "the same old recycled jazz.." is so far off base that it's ridiculous. It's very common for people to want to get into listening to jazz but to be a bit overwhelmed and intimidated, and you've done a fantastic job addressing that here. If someone asks me where to start with jazz I'll just send them a link to this video. Really well done!

Hi Ryan, I enjoyed listening to your choices. Your list is pretty well fixed on a particular time frame in jazz, albeit probably the best one. It's also almost entirely centred on reed and brass players as the main soloists. At least you had Duke playing with Coltrane, on which Duke's playing, especially to his own compositions are inimitable. No Oscar PetersonTrio, or Monk? No vocalists, which give you the sound of the most unique instrument, the voice, complete with lyrics. No Getz, MJQ, Gary Burton, Metheny, Mehldau? Oh well, there's plenty of time for a guy of your age. All the best...... Ps, don't get obsessed with pressings. That's gonna cost you a lot of unnecessary money. Cheers.

I should’ve titled this as a “Modern Jazz” video, I own many vocal jazz albums even had a few I wanted to put on this list but I went in this direction. Many of the artists and groups you named are amazing and I own many of their records but with a list like this I was almost undoubtedly heading into a territory of popularity and widely accepted albums. Maybe I’ll make new videos concerning the different time periods of jazz, there’s just so much it’s overwhelming and thanks for the support as well! It’s greatly appreciated!

Trying to find Lee Morgan III on audio file vinyl and not having much luck. I hope it gets repressed. Same with Gene Ammons. All sold out and not willing to pay that secondary market price. Enjoying your suggestion of Curtis Fuller also. Searching for vinyl. It was so much fun when I first got into this 2016 and you could purchase extreme high quality vinyl for $30. I am trying to not buy so much vinyl, my selection is fairly large. And the more I purchase the less I listen to what I have. And I had a collection of 20 albums it was easy to pick one to listen to. Not the same situation as it grew into the hundreds. Just like with photos, when you have too many none stand out or hold significant sentimental value. Everything gets lost in the shuffle because of the sheer volume. But as I am currently speaking I am thinking about getting 10 or 15 albums from Freddie Hubbard Wayne shorter Jackie McLean Hank Mobley Stanley Turrentine Wayne shorter Lee Morgan and Andrew Hill! But I am considering getting them because with extreme willpower I am withholding my purchase of Miles Davis Kind of Blue uhqr 45 RPM. I have the 33 uhqr. And the mobile Fidelity 45 rpm. And the Legacy 33 RPM Kevin gray cut. Thinking about trying to sell my sealed Marvin Gaye what's going on 45 RPM mobile fidelity to offset purchases. Not sure if there is a demand for it anymore after the Mofi debacle.

Great picks Ryan! I've been a jazz fan (and musician) for over 20 years, but just getting into vinyl this year. It's so interesting to hear this music I've known for decades through a different medium. For some reason I've never listen to the Curtis Fuller album you selected, I'll have to check it out. Since you invited additions, I'd add: - Joe Henderson "Page One" - Art Pepper "Meet the Rhythm Section" - Cannonball Adderley/Bill Evans "Know What I Mean?" - Dexter Gordon "Go" and/or "Dexter Calling" - Charlie Parker With Strings - Horace Silver "The Cape Verdean Blues" (alt. and in my opinion, artistic equal to the more popular Song for My Father... plus I love Woody Shaw) I could "add" about 100 more, but those are a few that fit the criteria of historical value + listenability (can't speak to availability or price).

Great choices. Agreed that Miles’ Prestige work is his peak. Also agreed that 50’s Miles, any Horace Silver or Wayne Shorter are great openers for newbies to jazz. For me it was Maynard Ferguson and Count Basie. The Roulette label Maynard albums are brilliant, on Mosaic. Never could get into Sonny Rollins with that tenor sound-rough. Obviously a fine soloist, but I’d rather hear Dexter. Just my opinion. I play trumpet, and Clifford is for me the greatest jazz soloist, as much as I love Lee Morgan, Miles, and Dizzy. Since you love Clifford with strings you should check out Charlie Parker with Strings if you haven’t heard it.

Great choice ! Do you know the "Prestige Records 24000 series" ? Bob Weinstock, ever resourceful, selected many of his prime recordings for a second issue with a new catalogue number and a new cover, and occasionally an altogether new title to snag the unwary. It is worth noting these pairs as they offer the opportunity to acquire very scarce rare early issues effectively pressed with metal derived from the original master! In a world of “re-issues” these are not the usual fare - they are “vintage reissues” ’60s pressings and can sound very fine." And OJC LPs, but keep in mind : about OJC 270 or 280 was when the mastering changed, from analog to digital. Oh, do you know Nathan Davis ?? you should 🤫; good luck finding original pressings ! Cheers, luca

I have a few in my collection but every time I find one out in the wild their always beat, I do know that they’re crazy affordable plus I know some contain 2 albums instead of one which is amazing considering how much originals go for. Thanks for the info on the OJCs I knew they changed around 300 but I figured it was never consistent, I’ll beware now though! Also I love Nathan Davis I have his Suite for Martin Luther King, definitely want the Hip walk with Carmell Jones tho! Thanks for the support!

@@amanandhismusic We had a Music Matter/Blue Note event at my store some years back. Joe gave a great presentation and history. This was when he was doing the Blue Note reissues on the Music Matters website. (He was still with Audioquest at the time). After his presentation people were milling around and Joe called me over to where he was talking to one of our customers. He asked me if I knew who it was. I said yeah, it's Jerry. It was Jerry Hahn,, the jazz guitarist, who actually recorded at Blue Note. Joe said he was up there talking about it but Jerry did it. It was funny. By the way, another guitarist that Joe knows well and often produces is Anthony Wilson. You're probably familiar with him but if not, my favorite by him is probably Power of Nine. Amazing playing and the least guitar centric album I've ever heard by a guitarist. Great double vinyl LP's. Take care

Did I just sit through 45 minutes and not see one Thelonious Monk album???? You've got good choices, but man, give me a break! Monk's songs have been covered more than any other jazz musician except Duke Ellington. I've written a lot about Monk and as a critic who has heard all his albums, let me recommend a few. His earliest tracks are on Blue Note's The Genius of Modern Music Vol 1 and 2. He hit his stride on Riverside records in the 50's. Got a few to recommend Thelonious Himself, all solo piano and sublime. Last track adds Trane and Wilbur Ware. Then Brilliant Corners and Monk's Music on Riverside show him at his apex with terrific sidemen such as Trane, Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, Ernie Henry, Ray Copeland, and Gigi Gryce.
@amanandhismusic
@amanandhismusic Год назад
I would’ve added an Album by monk especially because I have so many but often times when I recommend his albums to new listeners they don’t like his unfamiliar ideas and the song structures. Trust me I love Monk it’s just I tried to make this video for the new listener. My favorite monk record is definitely Brilliant Corners with Monk’s music close behind.
@willieluncheonette5843
@willieluncheonette5843 Год назад
@@amanandhismusic Recommend Thelonious Himself to them. Everyone knows the melody to the standards he plays so it's easy for them to hear how he is improvising on them. As far as Monk's playing is concerned I never got why he's so difficult. Unlike most jazz musicians he improvises on the melody, not the chord changes so I would think that makes him an easier listen.

I definitely understand, I just tried to base these selections off my personal experiences with recommending jazz records to people I meet and even some of my friends. There’s so many great jazz records out there and frankly it’s a genre I almost strictly collect. I overlooked many records I probably would’ve included in the video if I could do it again. Thanks for highlighting it in the comments though hopefully some new ears might try his music out.

@@amanandhismusic You picked some of fav records and I very much enjoyed your vid. Please don't think I'm trying to push my taste on you. I understand where you're coming from and what you're experienced. There was an aura around Monk from the very beginning, possibly due to very unusual personality and refusal to compromise his music to make it more palatable to the public. But today, he's almost mainstream, isn't he? Hope your viewers who might be "scared" of him will take the plunge. Thanks for your responses!

Kinda Blue and Time Out are obvious picks. Also Moanin by Blakey and Study in Brown by Brown/Roach. Cant stand Coltrane. His tone and phrasing are god awful.
@amanandhismusic
@amanandhismusic 2 месяца назад
Wow, I mean I can’t have a list without Kind of Blue or Time Out, personally I wouldn’t even have time out on the list because I don’t necessarily like it as much as others but given its pivotal role in getting people into jazz I decided to include it. Shocked that you don’t like Coltrane because he’s one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time and has most likely influenced your favorite musician in some element. Coltrane had a great tone that many tried to replicate, his phrasing definitely wasn’t normal or like anyone else but it was by no means bad. His phrasing is almost what he’s popular for, look at his writing and theory. The Coltrane changes might be one of the most influential elements in music.
@baconlatte

@@amanandhismusic By obvious picks, i mean must have for any intro to jazz. I didn't see that you had Time Out on your list. Must have missed it. Coltrane sounded like he was tone deaf. No ear for melody. Innovation is not the same as musicality. You can push boundaries and have a sophisticated approach and still suck.

Silly comment. Go through other people’s jazz favs lists or intros to jazz lists-I guarantee you won’t see that Curtis Fuller album, or that particular Bird album. And probably not the Miles Prestige album. Most people who do a list like this would be including Weather Report, Return to Forever-fusion stuff, then Brubeck’s Time Out, Lee Morgan’s bigger selling albums, not Search for the New Land. This is an original list.
