The Sinatra album sounds gorgeous, and I love the story behind it and the fact that the master tapes were stored hundreds of feet underground somewhere in Pennsylvania!
Michael, this is brilliant, thank you! I would LOVE to see you do a similar video but all electronic albums similar to one of your recent videos featuring Autechre, Burial, etc. A deeper dive into that realm. Also, keen to know your favorite Ambient audiophile recordings. Cheers.
Great video, Michael. Nice of you showing the Frank Sinatra. Impex doesn’t have a single bad pressing, especially the three blind mice ones. Make it a 21 list, with “Misty” :)
Hi Michael. The Kind of Blue UHQR editions will sell out in minutes. I would like to get one but...... I have some of those releases and they are fantastic. Excellent video Michael. Cheers JD
Great video!. Very happy to see that I have got almost all of the LPs that you showed and totally agree that they sound AWESOME!. Thanks so much for the video.
'Time Out' all the way and then Getz for dessert...buttery, silky chocolate gorgeousness! .... supreme & ballads for a nightcap (Grant Green 'Sunday mornin' is my weekend essential)
Hi Mike I’m from the Uk been watching your videos for around 3 months enjoying your shows I have 3 x rumours fleetwoodmac vinyl one is double 45 TPS around 5 years old audiophile vinyl but I have just received the us palace keven gray unbelievable you are costing a lot of money please keep it up 👍
Micheal as always all great great Jazz records that I have in my collection except for a few....Byrd in flight is amazing !!!...will be ordering the Frank Sinatra, Helen Merrill, and Dave brubeck Time Out 45 rpm....the Blue Note Classic series are great sounding especially if you are using tube equipment....be safe enjoy....Ed in New York....😎🗽🎶🎵☕🍷🍸🥂🥃
By the way, Michel Legrand's niece Victoria Legrand is the lead singer of indie duo Beach House. They are my favourite band I have to say. Crazy good dream pop
That's really interesting Cheers for the info! Love learning of family connections like this. I recently found out that Flying Lotus is Alice Coltrane's grand nephew
Cassette tapes are also recommended when starting an audiophile collection. To get the best out of the good well kept, undamaged cassettes, you need clean and demagnetized and lubricated tape path and Dol y NR OFF! Good cassettes sound like you are in a studio or concert hall. Big ,gutsy, full sound.
Who loves music, loves music in all formats! But I think your comment is perfect in a section directed to the "cassette". It is heading to the world of "vinyl" without making comparisons. In my case I have a collection in all formats! Tape, Vinyl, Cassetta & CD. Love music. ❤👍
Excellent suggestions. I wonder however where you acquire some of the US pressings as the likes of Analogue Productions can be a real challenge to source in Europe.
I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful show. I enjoy your insightful and educational channel. Your love of music of a vast range of genres comes through. We share that in common, as I go through many music moods throughout the day. I enjoy that you have a very relaxing style as well. A pleasure to subscribe!
Great vid thanks! I haven't heard of Ron Jefferson before so will check him out. My addition - "Jazz at The Pawnshop" blew me away the first time I heard it. Recorded Live in 1976.
Good to see you mentioned the Ron Jefferson Choir album. I found the original mono pressing years ago for €0,50 at a local market. It sure is a different kind of jazz. Sometimes I wonder why this great album isn't mentioned more often.
Once again, an awesome selection Michael. My Herbie Hancock pick would be Takin Off. I personally find it a little more accessible than Inventions and Dimensions, but we are talking marginally. I still have to pick up the Impex Sinatra pressing. My favorite Impex release so far is Legrand Jazz. On the tone poet side, Byrd in Flight is such a great recording.
Hi , I think I saw an Elvis album in one of your videos , have you had time to listen to it ? Did it sound good ? I have Elvis is back (1960) in many pressings (the most audiophile Elvis record ? ), Do you have it ? 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Michael - thank you very much for the excellent recommendations. Please could you kindly reveal where you get your excellent vinyl shelving from. I love how thin the shelves are! What are they made from? Thanks very much - Nick
Please tell me if there is a better sounding Mono recording than the Impex Sinatra because I would have to get it. Plus the booklet it comes with was very informative. Also, the Carole King Tapestry Mofi is done but they are releasing it as a One-Step preorders are live on their website.
I'm always looking for the absolute best sound I can get! But if it's not quite audiophile quality, it doesn't bother me too much! I don't want "perfection" , I want great sound, and the two don't necessarily go hand n hand!
A great selection, every one. I was going to suggest something from Bill Evans, but then realized there aren't any affordable audiophile versions of Waltz for Debby, or Sunday at the Village Vanguard, or much else really. Thanks for the video!
The Analog Productions "Bill Evans At The Montreux" on 45 is worth every penny, and I'm guessing that the more affordable 33-1/3 version is also very well done (and it's available). Not an audiophile-specific release, but the OJC Waltz for Debby is very good. I was happy enough with it that I posted a needle drop but unfortunately it was blocked by RU-vid. At any rate it's definitely worth getting.
As he said, they are in a video dedicated to them. Unfortunately, it is a very small company and they are in very high demand. They will not have more for a few months though. I believe the site is Vinyl Storage Solutions.
If anyone wants a good sounding A Love Supreme, for not much money, try to find Wally Traugott's repressing from 1995. It has the word WALLY handwritten in the runout. It is the most extreme example I have found (as a beginner) of an LP being unquestionably superior to even the latest CD versions - which is odd for such a prestigious album. Why would MCA not be bothered to press a better CD?
Oh by the way, two further points about the WALLY pressing of A Love Supreme. I encountered a thread on a forum - maybe the Hoffman forum? - in which it was debated whether this version of ALS is all-analogue or not. It is! And we know it is all analogue because halfway through the debate someone actually emailed Michael Cuscuna himself and received a definitive response. Ain't the internet something? The second point: The WALLY pressing was mentioned by Michael Fremer in one of his articles, describing it as superior to the CD. So there is that. So if you want a really good ALL ANALOGUE pressing of A Love Supreme for not much money, get the 1995 repress!
I just sold a huge collection 4,000 plus to a dealer in the United States. They were taking up way too much space. I kept about 300 gems. Anything I want to listen to is on Spotify, RU-vid and other sites. I don't think this vinyl craze will last. It will go out just like hockey cards and Beanie Babies. I just think that the prices of vinyl are way too high. Records are not artifacts from the Ming Dynasty. Paying what equates roughly to a weekly grocery order doesn't make any sense.
