I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video, I will tell you what happened on the 822 day of the war.
Day 822: May 25
Today, there are a lot of updates from the Kharkiv direction.
The most interesting developments come from the Vovchansk area. Here, Russian forces conducted strikes on bridges over the Siversky-Donets and Vovcha rivers in hopes of improving their chance of degrading Ukrainian ground lines of communication and quickly seizing Vovchansk.
The most critical Russian strike targeted the Siversky-Donets Dam bridge near Stary Saltiv. For this operation, Russians used a Kh-Thirty-Eight air-to-surface missile with a two-hundred-and-fifty-kilogram high-explosive warhead. Kh-Thirty-Eight has a forty-kilometer range, while the bridge is only twenty-five kilometers from the Russian border, making it very vulnerable. Ukrainian air defenses had no time to react to the missile launch because it was launched too close to the target, leaving no time for interception. The footage of the strike on the bridge was recorded by an Orlan-Thirty reconnaissance drone, which was likely assigned to report on the success of the strike and correct the strike if needed.
This bridge is the most crucial supply line connecting the group of forces in Kharkiv with other Ukrainians defending both Vovchansk and Kupiansk. If we look at road links and the region's geography, we can see that this section of the Siversky-Donets River is fifty kilometers long and had only four river crossings.
With the bridge near Rubizhne being destroyed during the first Kharkiv offensive, and with the bridge near Buhrovatka being too close to the frontline to be used for relocation of substantial forces, Ukrainians were left only with the bridge on the Pechenihy dam as the only remaining Ukrainian ground line of communication to Vovchansk and Kupiansk.
Such developments led to a considerable increase of the supply shoulder, as the route through Stary Saltiv was only seventy-eight kilometers long, while the route through Pechenihy is one hundred and twenty kilometers long, increasing the time needed for relocation almost by two times.
The key idea behind destroying all the bridges north of the Pechenihy dam was to quickly isolate the battlefield east of the river by preventing Ukrainian forces in Kharkiv from supporting Ukrainian forces defending against ongoing Russian attacks near Vovchansk. The rapid degradation of Ukrainian ground lines of communication was meant to facilitate a rapid seizure of Vovchansk, while inflicting minimal damage to the town.
The Russian military command likely chose the seizure of Vovchansk as one of the key tactical objectives of the first phase of the offensive operation in northern Kharkiv Oblast, since Vovchansk is the largest settlement immediately on the border that would provide Russian forces a staging ground close to the Russian rear to prepare for and launch the second phase of the Russian offensive operation.
In order to preserve the town for later use, Russian forces attempted to take it by conducting an encirclement operation instead of a head-on assault. In order to set conditions for the encirclement operation, Russian forces tried to isolate the battlefield even more by destroying another bridge near Tykhe. The destruction of this bridge prevented Ukrainian forces from maneuvering along the border and crushing the flanks of the advancing Russian forces east of Vovchansk.
At first glance, the bridge's destruction seems like a self-sabotage for further Russian efforts, but Russian armored vehicles, including BMPs and BTRs, are amphibious and can be used for assaults across the narrow Vovcha River. Such Russian armored assaults do not guarantee success but would improve over current pure infantry assaults across the river.
The main objective of the encircling forces was to establish control over the small forest east of the southern part of the town. Geolocated footage showed repeated artillery strikes on Ukrainian positions there as part of artillery preparation ahead of the storming operation.
Unfortunately for Russians, the Russian assaults near Tikhe brought no results since assault groups must move for up to five kilometers from the border across open fields to reach the village. Because of this exposure, many pieces of Russian equipment were hunted and destroyed by Ukrainian...

I think you're mistaken on the numbers. The Russians deployed 80,000 men to the northern border, of which 50,000 crossed into Kharkiv. The depletion comes from the staggering rates of attrition suffered by the Russians, losing nearly 1000 men killed or wounded each day since the start of the offensive. Nearly a third of the infantry that crossed the border since the start of the offensive has been wiped out, and reinforcements are having to be pulled from other directions, primarily Kherson and Zaporizhia, in order to make up for these losses.
@PeterLawton

I think RfU is referring only to the Vovchansk area, not the whole new frontline of the broader Kharkiv area.
@andersjjensen

Having 50,000 in Belgorod does not mean having 50,000 infantry soldiers in Belgorod. It means having 50,000 artillerists, medics, mechanics, logisticians, cooks, officers, NCOs and infanterists in Belgorod. Being able to do a land assault with 10% of your force is very reasonable in NATO parlance, so that Russia (who is notoriously infantry heavy) can muster 8,000 (16%) with some rotation capability seems plausible to me.
@DawudSandstorm2
@DawudSandstorm2 Месяц назад

The reason why the plane wasn't intercepted is because the US and Germany forbid Ukrainians shooting down targets over Russian airspace. That is why interception rates of missiles targeting Kharkiv is so low and why the plane was even able to get close enough to launch the missile. It's part of the policy forbidding the use of Western weapons on Russian soil, and its utter insanity that Russia can freely drop bombs onto civilian and military targets without fear of being shot down. The destruction of Vovchansk would've been impossible without this policy, and if it were Anchorage(an American town in Alaska within range of Russian airstrikes) being bombed I imagine standards would be different.

Ryan Macbeth did a short vid on Russian vs US logistics. Russians ship everything in boxes.There are countless videos of haphazardly stacked boxes in Russian positions in Ukraine. The US use forklifts and load everything on pallets. The difference in efficiency is staggering. The Russians load their MLRS systems by assembling the rockets on site and then manually loading each one into a tube. The US drop a cage loaded with rockets onto the ground and the launcher uses it's onboard winch/crane to pick it up. The US can supply their forces anywhere in the World with luxuries Russians can't get on their own doorstep. That anyone thinks Russia is a serious threat to the US is baffling. Putin knows this and it's why he invests so much in his efforts to undermine the will of European allies and prevent the political decision to get serious in Ukraine.

I am as surprised and confused as you say. They have been able to try to avoid the counterattack of the Ukrainian Forces Strengthened by the arrival of Western material in other places on the front. But the number of those mobilized by the Kremlin, without the minimum training and sufficient means, launching them in waves regardless of the cost, also has its limitations and if for a few months it has helped Ukraine withdraw from some places, in my opinion, It has been due to a lack of material and giving up small portions of land in exchange for causing serious losses to the Kremlin. But this has ended, at least for a year, and now with Western aid, much of it already in Europe, which remains to come, and in addition to its own production of ammunition there are two Countries whose reserves allow it to sell it to a second NATO and EEC countries, which in turn are sending them to Ukraine. China is clear for different reasons that it is not going to get involved in the mess of sending it to the Kremlin, North Korea must already be at the limits of its possibilities, and the machinery of the Russian Federation, no matter how much it is said, does not have the capacity , the means and the money, to replace what you are spending. While Correa del Sur and India do have these reserves, the manufacture of Projectiles has skyrocketed in the West, which, although late, has more modern factories and sufficient economy, without being left without reserves. And it is the Artillery that stops and stops the Russian waves, along with better and more AA defense systems and long-range precision projectiles... Until now, the transportation and storage infrastructure has been in favor of the Kremlin, being more or less safe away from the Front, but its days are numbered. The only thing within Vladimir Putin's logic is to wait for an attack on the Russian border to justify the use of tactical nuclear weapons; but that would be the Beginning of the End for the Army of the Russian Federation… But as he says; Time to Time, how infallible and impartial; He will pass sentence. An affectionate greeting for sharing his work and comments. 🇪🇸🙂👍👌 💪

Good points generally, but the one doubtful part of your comment seems to be the willingness of China "to get involved in the mess." I would not be wise for Xi to weigh in on the side of ruzzia in that manner, but he is not immune from committing blunders....which is why the Chinese economy is in turmoil right now. He is fully capable of making things worse for his personal fief of 1.4 billion people.

It was an obvious Objekt, which brings to my mind the posibility of useing moving Ponton Bridges. Not giving the enemy the chance to disrupt these critical logistical lines. Sinking bridges under water and retrieving them when they are needed. You can take the Initiative in this area of the border ...moving bridge segments, would be harder to forsee or target.

The most consistent Russian weakness is the the absence of feedback from soldiers on the ground on the frontline, both to military planners and to those controlling the air-power: they put in an effective airstrike against an apparently obvious target in support of a plan which was oblivious to the nature of the ground between their troops and their objective. This is in effect the outcome of a caste system in the Russian military, in which no-one *ever* listens to the views or observations of the "lower castes". It is interesting that it is mainly the Hindi-speaking news channels that support the Russian effort internationally, because it is a matter of faith with them that the caste system is a good idea!
@Comm.DavidPorter
@Comm.DavidPorter Месяц назад
Hmmm - I hadn't thought of that connection. Early on, I stopped watching Hindustani Times or whatever it's called, and other outlets from India, because they essentially mimic the muscovite propaganda. I thought that this stemmed from India's historic reliance on ruzzian weapons, from the times when the US and Pakistan were tight... but you provided another reason for resonance between the lying Kremlin regime and New Delhi.
@matthewspencer972
@matthewspencer972 Месяц назад
@@Comm.DavidPorter Putin's own _personal_ weakness is that he lets his own propaganda machine paint him into corners he *and his successors* can't negotiate their way out of. General Leopoldo Galtieri did not actually invent the propaganda narrative that led him to invade the Falklands, but once there were two generations of Argentine citizens raised with that narrative in their school textbooks and atlases, it's very hard to see how he might have done anything else. What Putin is doing now, is not so much ensuring his own survival as hanging the millstone of his territorial narrative around the neck of anyone who might depose and dispose of him. This is why "peace through negotiation" isn't going to happen: *only decisive defeat* will break his narrative and leave future Russian leaders with an actual choice of path to follow. (And, speaking of Atlases and maps: the CCP's "nine dash line" in the South China Sea is now a more expansive, ten-dash line. That line seems destined to grow by at least one dash with every "people's congress" from now on.)
@nerdyali4154
@nerdyali4154 Месяц назад
It's how the Russian military operates by design, not so much a cast system. The command structure is hierarchical with the idea that the lower ranks are there to implement the precise objective of the senior officers. If Putin or a general says attack town X, then the minions pass the order down the chain and it gets done. Nobody is going to send feedback because the structure makes it impractical and it would anger the guy at the top. The structure is there to ensure obedience and because it enables the easy integration of poorly trained meat into the force.
@howiehall4622

In the Russian military system negative feedback is prohibited. Even if your entire assault group is wiped out you have to report that it was wildly successful. Telling the truth gets you executed or imprisoned.
@JHNoble

@@howiehall4622 yep. also, historically: if a Russian shows initiative, and it fails, they get absolutely crucified. if a Russian shows initiative, it succeeds, and it embarasses anyone above them ... they get absolutely crucified. this is generational social selection for widespread passivity in the face of an authoritarian power structure, and zero initiative or creativity.

It must be hard to detect: its mean RCS is 0.04 m2, and it flies above 1km high. So I'm no too surprised, and yes it's a problem, but it's a problem on both sides. Edit: the biggest problem for me is that they can take off so close to the border, because Ukraine is not allowed to strike inside Russia with most \Western weapons. THIS is a major issue, but it's easy to fix.

If Russia has lost 501 000 men of around 18-60 years age, this means that given the russian BKT of around 15000$/year the country takes a loss of 7 650 270 000 taxable dollars annually - if losses do not mount anymore. This in addition to the sanctions seems pretty steep price to pay for some kilometres of farmland they didn't need to begin with..

Thanks again for your tactical insights, dating back to the early days of the war. Both sides are fighting hard, which is difficult to see from the mostly-static front line, and your observations explain how the whole line from Kherson to the north of Chernihiv is a game of chess waiting for destabilizing moves. I'm glad that Ukraine managed to weather the storm north of Kharkiv, and hope the tide will manage to turn outwards soon. Wishing all Ukranians peace and prosperity in the future ahead.. удачі україні
