Stores biggest impulse shopping trick is not putting snack and candy at the checkouts. It’s that the most essential items like bread, milk, eggs, butter and cheese, are all located at the back of the store so that you have to walk past all the stuff you want but don’t really need in order to get to the the things you do need.
@bulbinking

The real reason is how stores are made. The loading areas are usually in the back and thats where a lot of refrigerator and other electrical mechanisms reside, so it makes sense to set up the cold stuff by there they can most easily store it.

A restaurant I used to work at offered soup in either a cup or bowl. One time I poured water in the cup, then into the bowl. They were almost the exact same volume. Since then I have always bought the cup option.

This is so true! They make them in different shapes to trick the eye. Bowls are usually flatter like plates which makes you think you're getting more. I have a friend that works at a restaurant who did the same test.

I just buy what I want and like. I don't buy anything that is unnecessary. I do get a little ruffled over raising prices, and the product amount has shrunk. Don't care about influencers or the brand, packaging, etc. This is a good one, Mike.

I learned many of these marketing techniques while studying for my bachelor's degree in Marketing back in 1995. Also utilized my bachelor's degree in Psychology when working for a short while in Advertising & Marketing when I used to live in NYC. (Funny thing is that I ended up working in the medical field career-wise instead of using my marketing degree, haha 😄)

You missed at least one major one: The false alternative brand. Often companies will have multiple brands "competing" against each other. Think of car models to get a good example.

Black and yellow are often used for warning signs, so black and yellow marketing is a warning sign for me ;) There's nothing more expensive than a cheap product We call it 'bogof' (buy one get one free) usually pronounced bog off If i want medium i'll get medium, unless it's more than twice the quantity of the small, (working out as a lower price) then i can share it

Hi Mike! I learned a lot of psychological tricks when I was studying for my degree in advertising art. There are all kinds of tricks you can use, such as which typeface you chose, size and placement on the page and many more. I had a friend whose father was the manager for a large grocery chain. There's a science to where things in the store are located. What part of the store, and where products are displayed on the shelves is carefully orchestrated. For instance, on the cereal asisle, the sugary cereals with cartoon characters on the box are placed on lower shelves where children can easily see them, and pester their parents to buy them. Items the store wants adults to buy are at eye level and within easy reach, while other things are placed higher up, or on the bottom shelf. Nothing is left to chance.

There is an interesting book written called "Why We Buy" which goes into much of the psychology of shopping. Why are the cat treats (high profit margin item) on a shelf 5' off the floor in between cat food shelves? Because older people are the most likely to buy them and they will be less likely to bend down or reach up.

In terms of the medium option, I have occasionally used it. Like French fries, if I am buying for myself, I will buy the medium or small. If I am buying for more people, I will buy a large and then split it between me and my baby, for example.

"Made in the USA" - when in fact the product is MADE somewhere else. It's only assembled here. "Family-owned company" - designed to envoke emotions of the buyers family and therefore must be honest. When in fact, the family in question are all billionaires. "Veteran-owned company" - same as family owned but focused on the buyers patriotism. Veteran-owned, in no way means the owner respects vets. "Black Friday Sale" or "Tax-free weekend" - sales designed to get rid of overstock to clear shelves and make room for new inventory. Also, in some cases, the original price was raised before the sale, causing the buyer to essentially pay normal price. It's actually a "tax break" for companies.

Hotdogs do come in cans. They are called Vienna Sausages, which are thin "hotdogs" cut into short pieces. Meanwhile, I'm an elder and single, military retiree. I don't want to buy huge containers and portions of food, because I can't eat it all after opening it. If it doesn't keep for later, it's a total waste of money. But smaller packages are hard to find. Even in the "fresh" meats, especially fish portions are like a pound or two, way more than one person can eat. Freezing fresh fish is not good, it breaks down the flesh and becomes mushy. But they refuse to offer smaller portions no matter how many times I ask. When you live on a meager, fixed income tossing food is simply not an option. Finally, unless you have a room-temperature IQ you should be able to avoid, if not be totally immune from these tactics. But sheep will be sheep... and marketers know it.

A ,it depends in where you buy your drink! I try to buy a drink from QT (Quick Trip) as I can get the little bit of ice I really want and also serve myself. Last week I emptied dry big cup I carry for my Diet Pepsi - ended up needed to go to McDonald’s as I wasn’t close to my usual place! A large with easy ice (yea right) was a bit over $2 and I watched the person fill the cup at least 3/4 full of ice! And their large cup is closer to QT’s medium whose large size cost $1.59-tax!!! I dint fall for this crap!!!

I'm with the Brits with dd-mm-yyyy and metric. But commas instead of periods and periods instead of commas in large numbers is just dumb. 1.000.000,00 is NOT one million. 1,000,000.00 IS one million.

The gotta have this thing, doesn't work on me. Here's a tip. The more time you spend looking at the details of a product, and thinking about the other things you really 'need' to get, the less likely you'll fall for the gimmick. Besides, none of this stuff is gonna matter in about 16 years anyway.

First thing, I know plenty of those who get mediums lolol So I’ve been playing this game for years now. Of course, the extras cost money and I’ve caved in too many times with micro transactions. They seem so small too cause like 99¢ becomes $100 once it all stacks up. And I think if I were to get a refund of all the money I spent, I could prob buy a house. And it’s embarrassing cause I fell for such a marketing trick. I’m impulsive and majority of the time my impulsive thoughts win. I mean I just spent $4.99 and then some on an outfit for a game. I have a problem

Thanks great info! Costco & Sams club has it down pat! Im surprised it works very well! Who knew! Customers need to pay to shop there. The great benefit is the No hassle returns, So you tend to buy it " thinking well can aways return it" & another pet peeve is all stores now move things around making you stay in the store longer in hopes you find something you didn't intend to buy! & Those RU-vid bogus ads selling inferior products! You know the ones saying "Military grade" "New invention taking the world be storm" etc LOL! I guess it works on some people.

I always got mediums when I was a kid... I knew the large would be too big, because I was a kid, but the medium made me feel more grown-up than the small. Now that I'm an adult I usually go for smalls. Most grocery store tricks don't work very well on me because I find the locations themselves overwhelming and unpleasant... In an out as fast as I can. Online is a different story. Also, since I work in a grocery store bakery, I DO get suckered in to buying sweets after being around them all day and leaving exhausted and hungry.

I was surprised that you left out what I think is so obvious: Getting something for “free,” such as “free” shipping when it’s not free! It’s prepaid in your membership cost! Or when cell phones first came out, many people boasted that they now got “free” long distance. It wasn’t free, though. It’s all in your monthly flat fee. People love the word “free” and are often tricked into buying more because of it. How many Amazon Prime members buy more per year because of their “free” shipping? 🤑
@sandybruce9092
@sandybruce9092 5 месяцев назад
I’m a Prime member and I know exactly how much I spend at Amazon because I’m not stupid! I’ve saved enough in free shipping to more than lay for my yearly cost! Just depends on what you buy and how often! I’m sure Prime isn’t good for lots of people though! They just don’t think it through!!!

I'm sick of the upsell. Buy one get one half off or similar. If I went in to get a pair of shoes, I don't want 2 pair and I don't want to be overcharged for only buying one pair. Similar experience in restaurants, I don't want some massive portions and doggy bag. I just want a single meal for single meal price.
@sandybruce9092
@sandybruce9092 5 месяцев назад
Restaurants are the worst for having way too much food! I’m the Queen of take out containers as I don’t want to waste good food thst I can enjoy later! If they would just cut down in the portions, they could also cut down on the price. And I remembers many restaurants having half portions - I’d love this as I’m a small and slow eater. It sure would cut down on all the food that is thrown away - restaurants don’t seem to understand that!!!

Scarcity Marketing: In watching the commercials for the buh-buh-buh-buh-Butt Head products, every one of them is Limited Availability, Raw Materials Limited, Production Terminating. 1:03 I often feel like society would be better off had social media, and even smartphones were never created Social media was great when it was just based on a computer and you would just check in with your friends whenever. But now that EVERYBODY feels like anything and everything needs to be filmed and documented (and shared with the world) people are just focused on their phones and obsessed with likes and believe everything that they see online, and are somehow increasingly dumber. The current generations lack of anything before 2007 is quite frightening.

I don’t always succeed but I have learned to say NO! I don’t buy anything to drink when ordering out. Oh yeah…health hint…it may sound good to squeeze lemon into your water but how much care was taken slicing the lemon? Were hands clean? And here’s a big one…they put those lemons in a container so any server who needs them can grab them. So that means several people are digging into them. Community lemon slices? Think about that. Stick some lemon of your own in a baggie or carry some of that water flavoring stuff. I frequently find I say to myself “you don’t need that!” It’s very helpful. Good video.

14 years working between 2 grocery stores & let's just say I don't lie to customers when stocking shelves. I hate sales people, so I won't "sell" a customer something. If anyone asks me for my own personal experienced opinion of a product I've tried or not, I'll give it, pleasing or not..."To each his own, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, one man's trash is another man's treasure, blah blah blah." I'll help you find whatever you're looking for, but then go back to putting shit on a shelf, even if it's telling you of other stores that carry your product choice. Good example being, our tiny grocery store discontinued the Automotive shelf so we don't carry windshield wiper fluid anymore, but I will tell the customer of the 2 auto stores we have in the area to find such products. Sorry, but not sorry. You and your team try to have a good day/night. : )

I really don't fall for most of these. I don't like spending money on things I don't need. I always make a list, have a budget, and don't "treat" myself very often. This not only saves money, but makes "the little things" into big things and they stay exciting. Sure, I can usually afford a candy bar when I go shopping, but isn't it even better when once every few months I can buy a really good bar of chocolate and enjoy it? Knowing these facts is definitely helpful though!

9:00 I don’t care what country you’re from, math is universal. A comma is used to separate increments of 1,000x, and decimal points are used to separate whole numbers and fractions there of. If they are using a comma to separate a whole dollar (or euro) and cents, that’s not proper form.

6:32 Did he mean the former option? He even said the latter was a bigger loss. I would be much more apt to buy one thing I’m uncertain of. In fact, I do that all the time. If there’s new product that looks like it might be good, but I’m not sure, I’m only gonna buy one or two so I know if I like it. I’m much more likely to buy an individual soda of a new flavor than I am to buy a six pack even the six pack as a better deal.

I don’t like having that done to me and I wouldn’t do that to someone else. I legitimately think they might like something, I’ll point it out, but I’m not going to suggest they buy socks because they bought shoes or them via belt because they bought pants.

As far as reading product reviews that something I don’t do. I could care less what other people think about a product if I want to purchase a product I will. Example, DoorDash every restaurant there are other individuals reviews of the restaurant and their products. If I’m on a particular restaurants website Had products from that store or I want something from that store and could care less what other people have to say about that particular restaurant, or that store. I think reviews are silly. They block the restaurants website and I could simply care less about what others think. 14:09

1:50 every single online commercial I see talks about “our investors have warned us that we can’t continue to offer this product at this price for much longer…” Than why have I seen the exact same commercial tor months?

3) The decoy effect. You forgot to mention the other fact (due to inflation?): The large popcorn goes up to $7.50, while the Medium stays the same. "Still only $6" Then what? That actually happened recently in a movie theatre...

I work at a big box store and we have someone whose job it is to change prices. 8hrs a day, every day. Sometimes it's only a penny, sometimes significantly more. There was one day where the price of a single item changed 6 times in 4 hours.

I am a sucker for "discontinued" for 90% off, especially if they are actually being discontinued and at a dirt cheap price.

I used the scarcity back in the 90's when I was selling raffle tickets for my club I would only keep 5 on me at a time and would just say last 5 tickets which always sold then I would go restock my 5 and do it again worked great.

I remember being in a department store like a JCP jamming the elevator music suddenly I hear ever so softly don't steal it is immoral . I tell my friend did you hear that ? He said no then we listened and sure enough we hear it again . After that there was a 60 min show that talked about subliminal messages and how they do it .

I actually used to only get a medium drink at Chick-fil-A. Cause that's all I needed. And it saved a few cents😅

I can fall for the scarcity marketing: "only 1 left!", if its something I really want.

In this day in age you have to become that clever or nobody's going to want to buy it from you people want a presentation it's just the way it is cause let's face it who wants to buy something they have never seen before so presentation is key to getting it out there I mean could you imagine seeing a product for just 30 seconds just a straight picture of that who wants to buy that
