How about a >25 ways to make a GOOD troll level< A lot of these are BAD! And you should not intentionally softlock the player. At least put, like, Podoboos/ Lava Bubbles in the blocks or add spikes to prevent softlocking the player. My troll levels (I have a lot of troll levels, but haven't uploaded them yet) (mainly for CarlSagan42) aren't the best, but at least I made sure the player can't get softlocked by making sure the invisible blocks had Lava Bubbles in them or that there is always a way to get out by dying. Intentionally softlocking the player is an ABSOLUTE NO-GO and levels that do this should be booed.
LionIB IB I wasn't saying they're good. And yes, this video is a joke. I was expecting it to be a joke, seeing as he has all the >Super Mario Maker with Memes< videos. My point is that trolls that softlock the player should never be used, especially after a checkpoint. Unfortunately, that's a lot of japanese levels. Yes, there are good japanese levels. But a lot of japanese troll levels fall under the same category: Hot Garbage levels that intentionally softlock the player and have little to no good trolls or any good parts.
For anyone reading, don't do these. They aren't trolls, they are hot garbage that will make people boo your level. Also, NEVER softlock the player. Period.
Jorge 92 IF you soft lock a player after a check point make sure to have a Way to kill them self’s or else they will need to restart the level from the beginning or just don’t soft lock the player
Alvar Solving Yeah, anti-softlocks are basically mandatory if you want to make a good troll level, be it a clever puzzle, an annoying platforming section to reach some spikes, or just a fish.
Just in case people take this serious; please do not use these in your levels! These trolls are the cheepest in the book, really dumb and annoying. Don't expect any players to have a fun experience playing a level using these trolls. Exclusion is #24 if good implemented. Don't get me wrong, trolls can be fun, but only if they're smart. These trolls are so basic that even who doesn't play smm knows theme. And I swear if I see ANOTHER TWHOMP SPAWN TRAP, I am gonna lose some brain cells.
here's a list of trolls i've used (both unfair and ok ones though): 1. spawn-blocking enemies so you have to visit an area twice for a key 2. pick a door, except all the doors are wrong and there's a warp box offscreen you need to jump to 3. think fast thwomps 4. softlock pit, but only if you're small mario 5. inescapable clear pipe using cloud blocks 6. exclamation block trap 7. fake p-switch path 8. icicles over brick blocks with bob-ombs in them and red pow blocks within explosion range, you need to hit the blocks as you jump in order to prevent bob-ombs from blowing up area 9. 5th icicle trap contains an ant trooper you need to make it further in the level, hitting this block leaves you stranded 10. pit with invisible blocks, springs, and a mushroom. you need to get in and out in just the right way to grab the mushroom without getting trapped 11. proximity detecting on/off switch over spiked blocks 12. pipe that leads to death 13. leap of faith 14. find a question block. in a water level. good luck. 15. good ol' anti-jump blocks, with a smiley face made of coins below 16. don't try jumping over those blocks, or an on/off switch will release munchers onto the spot you need to get to 17. 2 invisible blocks stacked on top of each other, if you hit the bottom one you can't access the contents of the top, which contains a required p-switch to solidify the smile and use it as a bridge 18. hidden key 19. lava lift tries to drag you to your death. it has a pow block on it, which will be important later 20. box containing bowser jr below, defeat him before a p-switch timer runs out to get the key... except it's impossible. and the pow block, while it works, will be required later on, so using it now will screw you over in the future. the hidden key is also needed later. what you need to do is wait for the timer to nearly finish, then enter the box, as bowser jr drops into the void. 21. ...and after all that, you've been softlocked. except if you wait about 10 more seconds, another p-switch will save you, allowing you to proceed. 22. jump over thwomp, don't get caught in the walls of a dotted line block maze, and don't fall into pits. 23. checkpoint death trap, except, you actually shouldn't avoid it because you still get a checkpoint 24. avoid stars, because you need to spin on a thwomp 25. if you fail to do so, you get an anti-softlock in which you have to dodge stars in order to die 26. you're standing on bill blasters, which will fall into the abyss. get into a pipe without touching the spikes to the right. 27. pick a pipe, timed edition. if you're not fast enough, you're crushed by bullet blasters. fortunately, they both lead to the end 28. run to the end of a maze before a bill blaster gives you a key, forcing you into a deadly warp box ...and i think that's everything so far i haven't uploaded any of these, though
Basically, 90% of the trolls suggested by this video are TERRIBLE IDEAS and will result in bad levels. The very few that are good are showcased poorly. Don't take the advice given by this video. Watch videos of people playing good troll levels, and learn from the levels they showcase. For example: DGR, CarlSagan42, Juzcook...
To everyone who wants to make Troll Levels: 1. Do not use most of these Trolls. Players and even Troll Level Players don't want to fall in a pit by an invisible block. They want innovative Trolls, like you got a star and run unknown in a softlock area and then you realized, that you are softlocked and have to die. Make funny trolls, so that the player laughs and doesn't gets frustrated. (Troll 23-25 Were good Trolls) 2. If you want tips, check Troll Levels from popular Troll Level Creators and inspire from them 3. Don't make a normal level and at the end a Troll. There are only two options: A Troll Level or not a Troll Level, so Troll Level Players can play Troll Levels and None Troll Level Players can play normal Levels. 4. Give your Troll Level a good design. Good designed Levels are always better than ugly Levels. I hope I could help you! ~Necyen
Exactly, if someone sees this, don’t do these trolls there are tons of other videos with much better and actually funny troll set ups. These are just stupid softlocks or insta deaths and they’re not at all fun for the player.
You could also use the mushroom trap as so: Make a 2 high hallway leading into a room. Cover the top half with spike traps/saws, it doesn't matter too much. Just make sure small mario can go in unharmed, but big mario would die. Place a mushroom inside of the room. If someone is dumb enough to take it, They will have to die in order to leave the room.
Note: I hate New Super Mario Bros Wii U. Please don't use it when you are making trolls unless you are well experienced. 1. Minimum usage of kaizo blocks, please 2. This is even worse. You have softlocked the player, even though it is before cp1. No punchline to the troll 3. This is alright, just give the player an obvious reason to do this. Don't overuse or your level is garbage. 4. hehe fish 5. Don't overuse this either, or it's pick-a-path, the ultimate unfunny unfair troll. If you reuse it later in the level you can make it actually the solution, like twice twice 6. Let the player react, don't immediately kill them every time they start the section. Quick shots are fine, just make sure weird jank is an integral part of it 7. See 3 8. See 6 9. SOFTLOCK CITY! at least give them another non-shiny path to choose. 10. This is just a mushroom check, but be careful - really easy to make pick-a-path with this troll. Once again, no softlocks plez 11. See 6 (also thwomps are pretty boring alone, make them break something or other at least) 12. See 5 13. ??? isn't this pretty obvious what is going to happen? not even offscreen thwomp. punish for exploration can be used this way 14. Never do this, please. Unless it's an antisoftlock :) 15. Also pretty obvious. Make the star harder to grab by putting it on a track or something. 16. Fake dev exits are fine, just add sound effects in the invisible (kaizo) blocks and make the way that you die really funny. 17. Punishment for exploration. A little bit evil, but be consistent 18. No softlock plez. Add shinies (coins, powerups on tracks, etc.) Also make it easy enough to avoid but out of place enough for the player to be curious. Meta right now is pretty good for this 19. Brutal. At least make it a fakeout, or make the solution less obvious. 20. DONT DO PICK A PATH!!! DONT SOFTLOCK! never, EVER do this 21. hehe no exploration for mario 22. This is just garbage. One to two blasters, at most. 23. This is fine if it is obscure enough 24. CP0 hype! 25. Meh. Nothing special. Hate troll levels? This is what I do: I go through the level until I find out how to beat it. Then, I give two really good general hints towards the right direction. (You have a maximum two comments per level)
I’ve done three of these in my levels: 1: The fake dev exit: The level was slightly challenging; this was as a parody of the levels with these (a look at the level stats a month or so later revealed that *every* death was there). 2: The key in a random enemy (although, tbf, you had to kill all of them). 3 - The troll doors (although you wouldn’t know about them until you got there - two went to death, one went to the end).
I feel like making a level which is based on this but all of the good things instead, like the vine and exit leads somewhere, the star may be needed to get across munchers. Etc etc
