First Viking River Cruise? Prepare for Surprises! (Things We Didn't Expect)
Planning your first Viking River Cruise, or even your first river cruise ever? Buckle up, because we've got some surprises in store for you! This video dives into the unexpected aspects of a Viking River Cruise, helping you set sail prepared and ready to enjoy the unique experience.
We thought we knew what to expect on a cruise, but Viking threw us some curveballs (in a good way!).
Here's what surprised us:
Silent Ship Sailing: Forget constant announcements! Viking has a "no-announcement" policy. You'll get daily itineraries and info through the app, so pack your sense of adventure (and maybe a watch!).
Drinks Onboard... Really? Unlike most cruises, Viking lets you bring unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages onboard. Stock up on your favorites and enjoy them throughout your trip!
Explore at Your Own Pace: Tours are included, but some are more leisurely than others. Don't worry if you're an active traveler - you can still explore independently with Viking's handy maps.
Small Ship Camaraderie: Get ready to meet your fellow travelers! Viking longships have a smaller capacity, fostering a friendly and social atmosphere onboard and during tours.
No Room Service Dilemma: Viking offers twice-daily room service, but there are no buffets or late-night eats. Plan your meals accordingly, or grab a pastry from the Aquavit Terrace for breakfast on the go.
Limited Onboard Entertainment: Viking prioritizes exploring destinations over onboard activities. Expect a relaxed atmosphere with fewer shows and more opportunities to soak up the European charm.
Even with these surprises, our first Viking River Cruise was amazing! The relaxed pace, delicious food, and unique destinations made it an unforgettable experience.
Intrigued? Watch now to discover:
More unexpected aspects of a Viking River Cruise
Tips for navigating the "silent ship" policy and onboard dining
How to make the most of your time both on tours and exploring independently
The unique Viking onboard experience and the amazing people you'll meet
Viking River Cruises offer a surprising and delightful way to explore Europe. Prepare to be surprised and set sail for an unforgettable adventure!

Some friends just returned from a Viking Bucharest to Budapest cruise. A few weeks prior the husband fell out of a golf cart and injured his hip. They thought about canceling but decided to go ahead. The husband expected to just hang out on the ship while his wife and their friends went out on excursions, but the Viking folks offered him a low-impact itinerary that didn’t involve a lot of walking.

We recently finished the Rhine cruise from Amsterdam to Basel. With a 3-day pre-excursion in Amsterdam and at least 1 excursion a day we were pretty tired on our next to last day. In Colmar we took the "leisure" version of the walking tour which took us through the town in a small "train." It turned out to be wonderful as we could actually see more as we were looking at the sites rather than looking down at the cobblestones that I'm convinced were trying to turn my tired ankles. I would highly recommend this option if you are tired...

Took a Danube river cruise on Viking 5 years ago. Our flight to the ship was cancelled and we had to find another albeit later flight. We ALMOST missed the ship as they were pulling up the gate as we arrived. We were out of breath and our first stop was THE BAR were we put our silver spirits package to good use. Our bartender understood and made us THE BEST gin and tonics ever! AND the best part our luggage was lost by the airline. The Viking crew coordinated the return of our luggage at the next port. The crew actually offered us THEIR clothes until our luggage arrived AND gave us free dry cleaning. This was over and above what I expected. The river was low so we had to change ships mid tour. Off on one ship and on to the next. Had to pack and unpack again. NOT Viking's fault. Overall we are looking to book again on a Viking river cruise but this time we will pay attention to river levels. Viking did kinda lie to us about this condition on the days before our journey. You must do your homework on a river cruise, as it is NOT like ocean cruising. Viking is not the most expensive or the least expensive. BUT for our trip it was just fine. People were great, DRINKIES we top drawer, and the food was also great. We are easily pleased and not snobs so everyone has their own opinions. Again we are looking forward to our next cruise on Viking either Rhine, or the Danube again.

I'm a firm believer that there are two types of luggage - carry on and lost... I only own a carry on bag and just returned from a three month trip (1 week in London+49 day ocean cruise to Brisbane+7 weeks in Australia and NZ. There is no need to bring everything you own just in case. Over the years I've Invested in merino wool tshirts and long sleeve tops and dress them up with scarves and jewelry. I generally bring 10 tops and 5 bottoms and everything must go with everything, so that's 50 combinations. Also, none of my tops have a pattern (your table mates at dinner won't recognize plain tops as easily when they come around again in a few days, plus the mix and match process is much easier without patterns. My late husband had a similar routine but with golf shirts and no iron collared shirts in sport fabrics, 1pr of real dress pants for dinner and 2-3 pairs of sport fabric trousers for daytime / excursions. He purposely chose a plain black, slim fitting bathing suit that passed for walking shorts so he didn't have to pack those as well. I keep looking at river cruises but haven't booked one yet. This video was a good overview of the differences with regular large ocean going ships. I didn't realize this line allowed you to bring on alcohol. I don't drink enough to buy a package so I usually just pay as I go, but picking up a bottle of local wine would be a nice option.

We think of our cabin as a place to rest while the rest of the ship is our living room, dining room, etc. It all belongs to us and is shared by the other cruisers. The only issue we had on our Egypt cruise was a smoker in one of the cabins who smoked on his balcony.

We’ve taken three river cruises so far with a fourth booked next year. We love how river cruising is different to ocean cruising. The relaxed atmosphere and ease of simply walking off the ship into a destination is great. We also love the scenic cruising that river cruising offers.

They have multiple levels of tours based on your fitness level. I don’t understand why you didn’t see this. As far as laundry self service facilities, it’s true that they would be nice but consider how much smaller the ships are compared to their other ships. Where would they put them? I agree that dining is very different and you cannot be shy. But again the ships are much smaller so they don’t have many options. You are 100% correct about mobility issues. Probably not for people with them.

Very good overview of Viking river cruise. One important oversight though is there is no medical help or assistance if an accident or emergency arises. There were several people that fell ill on my cruise last October and one was even hospitalized with no assistance. I tripped and fell on my final disembarkation as there were no lights on deck before sunrise and didn’t see the raised edge of the gangplank. I had a gash on my eye, broken glasses and two broken bones in my hand. I was offered no medical help but sent on my way to fly from France to Ohio on my own. When I contacted Viking when I got home, their response was to file with my insurance and “accidents can and do happen.” I had to have surgery on my hand and six months of recuperation. If there had been lighting on the deck…it was pitch black…I wouldn’t have tripped. Viking is governed by European law so there was no recompense, or even apology for my accident. Buy travel insurance thru a third party, not theirs as the Viking trip insurance wouldn’t pay for my prescription glasses.

We just got back from a 15 day cruise down the Rhine & Danube rivers on the Travelmarvel - Capella (very new boat) and it was excellent. They have done away with those tiny balconies on the Viking boats and made the rooms bigger by having an electric window the full width of the room where the top half slides down to create your balcony instead which is much better. Plus Viking boats are full of Amercans (and they are loud people with little manners so beware if you are from another country) The travelmarvel boats have a mix of British, New Zealand, Australian & others and we found them all excellent to cruise with. The staff on the boat were excellent and very efficient. Our room was very comfortable and so was the bed & pillows. We were abe to store our two suitcases under the bed so it freed up space in the wardrobe. All the daily cruise data was also available on TV in the room as well as other means. The back bar on the boat had that Irish Pub theme & happy Hour every evening with half price drinks was excellent option to the front lounge area. There were some very elderly people in their 90's on the boat and i really don't think it is suitable for their age group as you need to be active & reasonable fit & mobile for the daily routine of river cruising on and off the boat. After the river trip from Amsterdam ended in Budapest we then tripped around Europe using the rail system (first class Euro-pass) and found that "really enjoyable" doing our own thing and covered a lot of ground on the high speed trains hopping from one country to another & staying in hotels along they way. We started our journey flying into London & ended up back in London & did some train hopping around there as well from Kent in the south to Yorkshire in the north before heading back to London to fly back home (not before visiting the Tower of London & seeing the crown jewels which was pretty cool) Overall now that we have done the river cruise which was on our bucket list i don't think we would do another, but instead we would go back and use the train network which is an excellent way of getting around both Europe and the UK

I was surprised earlier today, which it's nearly 2:00 in the morning here now, so let's say yesterday for sake of posterity, by my parents coming back from their cruise in the British isles. But they brought back souvenirs for my sister, her husband, and myself. And one of the gifts that they gave me, was a Viking river cruise next year with my father and I was utterly shocked and still am about it. But we are going on the Radgrid, so I was very pleasantly surprised to see that boat in your video. And I even recognize one of the destinations based off the map. We have found European river cruises be more enjoyable than ocean cruises. Much more relaxed and being iff the beaten track provides a chance to see how the tastes and lifestyles of people in smaller cities of towns. I think river cruises to be about learning about touring as opposed to cruising. This fall we are doing a Bike Boat tour between Passau Germany and Budapest. We will be doing a self guided route route of 25 mile to 35 miles per day on the Danube river bike path. Lots of preserved history, natural beauty as well as some of the best beer and white wine in the world to enjoy as we cruise.

I'd hate being cooped up in one of those floating hotels, ploughing across the Atlantic with nothing to look at. Those cruises must appeal mainly to people who like being on a ship, not visiting places. The only other cruise I have ever don was Cairo to Aswan on the Nile. That really was mainly sitting on an open deck gently pootling along with stops to visit interesting ancient sites. Mind you there was a nasty outbreak of tummy trouble, but what do you expect in Egypt? On the whole the food was good. That must have been more than 30 years ago.

The river ships might not be a good fit for someone in a chair due to narrow doors and stairs. Maybe you can book a cabin on the main floor. Took a cruise in the late fall of 2023 passau to budapest. The water levels were too low so we were bussed the last portion of the trip to budapest. i found out that this stretch of the Danube was impassable for the past month yet viking never told us in advance. We should have been told in advance so we could reschedule our trip. You get the feeling that they are nickel and diming you buy not offering free soft drinks during the day. I paid $5 for a small bottle of soda. ridiculous. the tours are good the food is above average yet the breakfast is the best. I hated being herded into the dining room with the masses for dinner . I along with about 40 passengers caught the Norovirus and the kitchen didn't have any speicail accommodations for us. you would think on a river cruise where perons often et such viruses that Viking would have food to assist in recoveing like chicken broth and ginger ale. yes they ran out of ginger ale and were too cheap to pick up supplies. One of the selling points is that they will periodically pick up food supplies along the route to give passengers a taste of the local food. No they supply all of the food to the ship the day of embarkation. The crew was excellent and accomodating but i felt the cruise was a bit overpriced. viking could charge less if they would stop sending 2 to 3 expensively produced sales brochures every week.

Definitely agree about the amount of marketing Viking sends out! Insofar as Viking service, it's true that they are not set up to handle routine medical issues but that's more likely due to the fact that they're close to cities most of the time and rely on the locals. We were on a Budapest to Amsterdam cruise where a passenger fell and broke his arm before we left Budapest. While he was treated at a local hospital (that's a horror story in itself), Viking insisted he see a doctor in Vienna and even arranged transportation to and from the clinic. Now, on our 2022 Douro cruise (where cities/villages are non-existent on the river), it was less than satisfactory. Passengers got on the bus to the ship, complaining of feeling 'ill' and blaming it on food they ate. The cruise director didn't bother to suggest they wear masks and, thus, this 'food poisoning' quickly spread like wildfire (we're sure it was a Norovirus). Many passengers (and crew) spent time in their cabin while Viking's officers were too busy glad-handing and perfecting their comedy routines to enact sanitary measures. Our Aunt spent four out of seven days in her cabin and the caring room staff brought her broth and tea throughout the day.

@@jking5907 There was a virus on our ship too…I said in another reply that there were many on our ship that were stuck in their room with no room service or assistance from the crew. Their partners/roommates had to walk into town to find a pharmacy for meds. When I tripped I was offered no medical assistance at all, when it was obvious I was injured. In a foreign country, where you don’t speak the language, and at the cost of the cruise you expect some assistance. If I hadn’t had another passenger help me I don’t know what I would have done since I was in shock. The Viking desk staff just hurried me on to my airport shuttle. It was before dawn and my sister was still asleep as she had a much later flight. In hindsight I should have insisted someone wake her up.

Just got back from the Budapest to Regensberg,Germany. It was my first Viking River tour. The good: I appreciated the included walking tours and the great tour guides. Loved the coffee machine. The staff was top notch. Rooms kept clean. Plenty of room for clothing even on level 1 with just a window. Glad we didn’t pay more for the balcony since most days boats were parked beside our boat blocking the views of the balconies. Loved there were no kids. I don’t drink but beer and wine was nice for those who do. : The rooms are small, but clean, great shower water pressure and complimentary toiletries. The beds weren’t very comfortable, neither were the pillows. The wifi was as non existent. The food was just ok. Enough for me but would not be enough for my husband had he been with me. I wish there were more options. Also wish there was an option for snacks during the day other than cookies. If you miss lunch there’s nothing else to eat or no other place to go other than cookies.

Looks nice. Wife and I sort of hate that gradual 'clique-iness' of this dining type of situation. We'd almost prefer a system where you're just randomly assigned a table number each night, and then you sit with whomever the other couple that was given that number for that night. Just curious, what exactly was the specific “disappointments” with having more senior fellow travelers? I ask this having cruised Viking as a 70+ aged passenger and do not remember my cohorts having impeded my enjoyment of the experience. In fact, quite the opposite occurred as I met retired senior military officers, professionals from various fields, and a few folks who continue to work. Viking is definitely a more reasonably priced river cruise option so perhaps the discomfort or disappointment emanated from differences in socio-economic class. As for myself I am a retired Army Reserve Lt. Col. combat veteran, and a retired law professor with 40 years of teaching and practice experience. My hope would be (is) that I am not a disappointment to a near 60 co-traveler. And further that I might have something to say that a younger passenger just might find interesting. We had to insist, after all we had paid for it, ● Twice, at lunch, I asked if a particular dish was vegetarian and was told yes. Both times I found meat in them. ● The excursions are very badly organised. ● The food was awful and in the restaurant there are no two seater tables. ● Viking travel at night so you never see the landscape. While I don't believe the beverage package on Viking is worth it, considering wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner, we did buy it once and had absolutely no problem getting any drink/wine we wanted. Scenic gets very good reviews and their prices reflect their exclusivity.

What about smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes and marijuana ? I'm not a consumer of any of the above, just wondering.

We recently did a 14 night cruise on the Travelmarvel boat- Capella. you can smoke up on top deck in designated table areas (with ashtrays supplied) and at the back of the boat outside from the back bar, so that is not a problem

I would never consider Viking river cruise for thee reasons in order: 1. No gym. 2. Not all cabins are open balcony. 3. Limited dining hours and options. I am a picky eater with a diet. 4. I feel coop up with 200 strangers. 5. Limited excursions, and force to leave the boat at port to go on waling tours.. 6. France is not my favorite country. 7. 2 to 4 times more expensive compare to ocean cruises..

I agree! River cruising isn't for you, but they have many other itineraries other than in France.

1 - no gym. Not a lot of river cruises have gyms. 2 - every company is the same. 3 - picky eater ? Viking catered to many vegans and vegetarians. Your comment is not valid. 6 - France is not my favorite country. Nothing to do with Viking, go to another country.

One of our dear friends has a gluten allergy. Every morning, the head chef would bring her a special menu during breakfast to select her meals for the day and would discuss the options with her. They would also create almost anything she asked about. The staff would always greet her by name and cater to her. She’s a very sweet, kind lady who would never ask for or expect such attention. She felt like a queen! It made us all so happy to see how much care and attention she received. Viking was outstanding!

Why are you so anti Viking?

Viking boats are pitched for Amercians and they are considered a budget boat trip compared to other boats like the APT Travelmarvel boats like Capella which are very modern design boats less than two years old since built with higher standards /bigger rooms etc
