I truly remember it was our first train Journey way back in 1999.... Truly enjoyed it still using it to the full. Thank you Konkan Railway for the incredible Matsyaganda express.....❤ Recently travelled by Matsyagandha. Still had the same experience 😅
I still remember my first journey by Matsyagandha Superfast Express train in August 1998 ,then numbered 2620.Its scheduled departure from Surathkal railway station at 21:21 (9:21p.m.) and scheduled arrival at Thane railway station was 12:20 p.m. afternoon. There were only two passengers in my coach (compartment or bogie). The matsyaganda train was almost empty. The other passenger asked me whether train will move or get cancelled. I said irrespective of number of passengers train will make its journey. At that time there was no catering or pantry and only big stations like Udupi, Madgaon and Ratnagiri had refreshment stall open , we would get down from train to have tea and snacks. Train would stop fifteen to thirty minutes at these stations. This scenario continued till 2000 A.D as not many travelled in Konkan railway because of fear of getting stuck in tunnels and landslides. Today (2024 C.E.) the scene is completely changed, It is now very difficult to get berth in this train (12620 / 12619).

I made conscious efforts to forge an emotional bond between the passengers and the railway administration. The Konkan Railway (KR) project was completed soon after my tenure as the junior Railway Minister began and was inaugurated in the presence of Prime Minister Atal jee, KR was to launch a new train service between Mumbai and Mangalore. Officials approached me to finalise a name for this service. It occurred to me that a contest for suggesting an appropriate name be declared amongst passengers themselves and the winner should be given a free pass to travel first class on the train with his or her family any time during the first year of its run. When this contest was announced, we were inundated with suggestions. As the train was to travel through a coastal belt, the name 'Matsyagandha Express' was selected. 'Matsya' is the Sanskrit word for fish and 'Gandha' being the word for smell. The name proved most appropriate. The overwhelming response was a pleasant surprise. It is a thrilling experience when a train service is launched that fulfills a long-pending popular demand and sentiment. It becomes one of the highlights of one's life.
People travelling by Konkan railway must remember Mr. George Fernandes then Railway minister of India, Prof.Madhu Dandavate then Finance Minister of India and Ramakrishna Hegde ex Chief Minister of Karnataka state for starting the Konkan Railway project. This railway track line connecting west coast of India from Roha to Thokur near Suratkal could not be executed even by British who connected almost all places in Bharat (India) by train services.
How is it not mentioned that the name Matsyagandha Express was chosen by the then Railway Minister Ram Naik in a competition to suggest a name? In fact he has also mentioned this in his autobiography marching ahead...Ram Naik being a Maharashtrian must have been left out by Konkan Railway as usual....
Konkan rly daily detains this train at multiple spots out of grudge hence it always reaches 2 har late at udupi. Other train's which scheduled timing is after this train always moves ahead. leaving this train behind. Konkan rly harrassing karnataka passengers daily.
Dnt cry like stupid.. Its running time is responsible to make it always busy and shows Waiting list...Morning it will reach Mumbai at a 6-7am that's good time...Mastyagandha is a ❤ for Mangalore udupi people..
