SM-220 has been in my lineup for many years, great sort of "all in one" box!

Great overview of a classic piece of gear. Surprising how many people don't know what a station monitor is. I get questions a couple times a year from people asking me to describe their purpose. Good job.

RTTY is very often used for ham radio contests. The next big contest using RTTY would be the ARRL RTTY Roundup on January 7-8, 2017. 30 hours. If you are a ham it is a great opportunity to have some fun and if you aren't (yet!) you can still listen in and run the decoding software to see some of the activity.

Cool. I just bought a TS820S that came with one of these monitors, the remote VFO unit, MC50 desk mic, and the filtered speaker. The guy also had a mint SB221 but sadly it was sold just days before I called.

I just ordered one of these to go with my new (to me) ts-820s setup. I am a new ham with an IC-7300, but I wanted an older rig I would work on, restore, and play with. Why not something from my childhood years!?! Ok I was a kid in 1978, but still I love the nostalgic feeling on running this old rig. Honestly, I don't find a huge difference between the Ts-820s and the 7300 in terms of real world functionality. Sure the waterfall is nice, and the variable passband is a little nicer, but it's not like I have encountered many signals where the 7300 is leaps and bounds better. Typically they are about the same.

I know this is an old video, but thank you. I just received a TS-820S setup that included one of these and I'm not trying to figure out how all of the pieces and parts go together.

It does, but ONLY if it has the *optional* adapter installed. And of course, there are only two variations available - the BS-5 works with 3.395MHz IF signals, and the BS-8 works with 8.83MHz IF signals.

Great! I was thinking of getting one of these for my beautiful condition TS-530S - but alas, I'm going to save my money for an IC-7300. Sad!

I bought one hoping it had the panadapter but no such luck, I had to build two panadapters, and am on to number 3, or should I say one panadapter that will work with various IF stages for multiple transceivers. I made the 8.8307 MHz for the 800, and then did two more Xtals and two more IF transformers, so I can do the panadapter with a TS440, TS450, a Yeasu and some other stuff. The screen is so small, I took an old student grade Tektronix O Scope with a dead 2nd channel and made that a station monitor with a large(r) CRT screen. These SM220s are beautiful inside. Kenwood laid these out so neatly, and they really are just gorgeous inside. 73 KI7AQJ

Yes, a little bit. On the SM-220, this is done by loosening a pair of wing-nuts on the rear panel and rotating the CRT. Slightly different magnetic environment since I moved the shack resulted in the tilted trace, and I haven't gone back to adjust it yet.

Thanks for the video.I bought one of these about a year ago got it for a song about 15 dollars at the flea! It has the BS-8 ,and i had seen an old QST article a few years back about bringing out the iF in the TS-440sat to use one of these, and that is the mod i'm about to do. i see in the manual they talk about using two different iFs at the same time one 1st iF going in the back and the second iF going in the front V.input i see you are using only the rear input 1st iF for band monitoring, so i will be able to see band activity.... what does using both iFs at the same time Give me over only using just one? it isn't mentioned in the manual or am i just reading it wrong?73'Jim KB1PFL
@w2aew
@w2aew 6 лет назад
The first IF output is a wideband output to be used with the pan adapter (bandscope) to look at activity over a large portion of the band. The 2nd IF output which is brought to the front of the scope, is a narrowband IF signal - the same signal that goes to the demodulator for reception. So, it let's you see the RF envelope of the received signal (in OSC mode) similar to the view you see in MONI mode for your transmit signal.

@ElmerFuddGun

What was the reason for doubling the IF with the newer models?
@w2aew
@w2aew 7 лет назад
The TS-830S is a dual conversion receiver, with filters in both IFs, while the TS-530S is a single conversion. Thus, better filtering in crowded conditions, and the ability to add variable bandpass tuning vs. simple IF shift. Here's an excellent link describing the differences/changes between the Kenwood hybrid rigs: www.k4eaa.com/types.html

Hi, how do you set up the sm220 with the 830S? I know the 830s has two IF outputs let me know what I can do thanks!
@w2aew
@w2aew 5 лет назад
For the TS-830S, you would need the BS-8 Pan Adapter installed in the SM-220 in order to do the spectrum scope. This connects to the IF 1 output on the back of the rig. If you want to monitor the received signal envelope, then connect the IF 2 output to the front panel V INPUT and run in OSC mode. To monitor the transmitted signal, connect the TS-830S RF output to the RF INPUT on the SM-220, and the RF OUTPUT on the -220 to the antenna system.

w2aew so i need a BNC to RCA connection on the back of the 830S? What are the cables called that I may need to buy? Thanks!
@w2aew
@w2aew 5 лет назад
@@danielpenaofficial4186 The pan-adapter connection is simply and RCA to RCA cable. The 2nd IF connection to the front panel of the can be done with another RCA-RCA cable and an RCA to BNC adapter. However, in my experience, the use of the 2nd IF with the SM-220 is of very limited value - I've never used mine this way except to see how it works.

@w2aew
@w2aew 7 лет назад
Definitely not plug and play. There's no simple way to do it. If the TV has an analog video output (NTSC) then you might be able to use the circuit in this video, but you will need a scope that has a Z-axis input. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yf4kOMSPbM0.html

Will a SM-220 connect to my TS-520s Station...?
@w2aew
@w2aew 3 года назад
Yes. For Transmitter monitoring, it works with all HF radios. For the bandscope with the TS-820, you'll have to have the BS-5 Pan Adapter installed in the SM-220. The TS-520 doesn't have a connector for the IF output to connect to the pan adapter, but the SM-220 manual includes instructions on how to add this modification to your TS-520.

@w2aew

For two-tone testing, the tones need to be non-harmonically related. So, this is simply a choice that meets this criteria as well as being close to the center of the audio bandpass of a typically ham radio transceiver.
