In this video we are going to show you how you can completely rebuild an engine at home for cheap with your family with only basic tools. We will show you how to hone the bores, polish the crank, lap the valves, check bearing clearances, replace all the bearings, and gaskets. This engine is a Dodge 5.9 Magnum which is the updated version of the 360 LA Mopar engine. Our engine had 250,000 miles on it and was not treated well. Hopefully we have helped someone with this video, stay tuned for the install into our 74 Dodge B300 coming soon.

You would use the same lifters and pushrods and cam after going thru all that work and money?? I wouldn't admit that my friend if you depend on engine rebuilds for a living. Not many customers will want to spend the mo ey on labor and not spend the few bucks extra to do it right , especially on a 250k mile engine

I love watching y'all's videos, I remember when I was a kid my parents and I built a 283 in our living room. The only machine work was the boring 40 over. I remember dad polished the crank shaft with a leather strap semilar to what you doing with the sand paper. The next day I came home from school and mom and dad were adjusting the lifters while it was running, Dad was old school. Anyway by that evening it was running good and we drove it to the gas station and jumped on I 75 north and drove it 1200 miles it's maiden voyage from FL to Ohio. Change oil and filter and Drove home. Love that it's a family thing. My new favorite show

Great video ! Reminded me of the last engine job I did with my Dad before he passed away in 1990. We rebuilt the 232 straight six engine in our 1966 Jeep J - 2000 , Dad was the instructor and I was the student. We found that three of the pistons had broken rings. Fortunately they did not mess up the bore and we were able to hone them out, but we did have to buy three new pistons due to the ring grooves being stretched out. I believe we did that rebuild in 1984 and that engine still runs fine today ( I actually ran the truck today ). It does not see much road use anymore as I keep it for winter snow plowing. Those old six's were rated at 145 horsepower - not bad compared to my 1980's era Ford 302's that are rated at only 150 horsepower and 270 foot pounds of torque. Thanks for the video and hope Ralphie feels better.

@Sleerper, you asked how to clean the piston ring grooves in the video. Unkle Tony's Garage suggests breaking a piston ring and using it's sharp edge to scrape the carbon buildup off. I haven't tried this, but I will. The ring itself is the perfect size and shape to clear the debris. Thanks for making this video. You know a ton of tricks and make a great build with the family. This one feels like a masterclass on engine rebuilding. Tearing this one down and doing all the work on it, there's no way not to learn something. One of the best learning opportunities in this one is how to be the best dad and not go off on your daughter when she swings the hammer too early and almost creates a situation. Dad's restraint and keeping himself together in that one second is priceless. Granted, no one knows if there might have been some editing involved after that second, but keeping it together in that second is everything. Huge dad points on that one, for sure! This old Minnie Winnie is getting closer to that road trip and the incredible footage that will follow. Hopefully it continues to go well and this engine is fit back into that van by now. Seeing the floors being put back in is the vid that's been worth waiting for. Looking forward to that happening soon!!

I tell you what, mate. After watching this video, I don't feel daunted about tearing into an engine again. Last one I did was 30 years ago and when I was faced with doing work on one of mine recently, I chickened out, letting a mate of mine do it all for me. Body work, welding, panelbeating - no problem, but an engine? Nope. After seeing this (and remembering back to what I'd done many years ago), I almost find myself looking forward to tearing down and rebuilding the engine on a project car I'll be taking on in a couple of months. The engine is an unknown that "ran wen parked" and I was tossing up about just dropping it in and seeing how it went.....when really what I WANTED to do is pull it down and check it first....so I'm gonna have a go! I completely agree with you about auto transmissions though. Even my Dad with 30 years of building performance engines for family and race vehicles would not touch one. Manual gearboxes - yep, no problem, but autos, nope. He described their internals as witchcraft and couldn't get his head around how they do what they do.....and having seen the auto box on one of my vehicles in pieces on the workbench of the rebuild shop, I completely agree with him. Even though the bloke talked me through how it worked, with the solenoids, pressure through certain passages doing one thing and valves doing others, it still seemed like witchcraft to me! Looking forward to hearing this baby fire up when she's in place and everything is hooked up. I bet all three of your young 'uns will get a huge kick in their confidence when she fires too, considering they've all had a hand in rebuilding the beast. That old camper won't know itself when she gets back on the road! All the best

Great video! 👍 I always used to snap off a section of piston ring and use that to clean the carbon out of the piston grooves - worked a treat

Dear Brian Newby 👍👌👏 Yes, that usually and definitely the best way to clean the grooves. 2) I was astounded that they didn't simply put the pistons in the ultrasonic cleaner. These things work fantastic. Best regards, luck and health in particular.

Hey i gotta share a little story with you about your motor home project. I totally appreciate all the different cars you work on. I'm restoring and daily driving a 1984 Nissan/Datsun pickup with an SD25 diesel engine. Its nice for northern Canada, no rust. 5 speed, extended cab, bucket seats, power steeping. BUT, some parts are hard to find. There is a 1" heater hose connecting the head to the side of the block. Mine popped a leak. It's pre-formed into more than a 90 degree bend, in only 6" of length. Impossible to get one anywhere. I bought bulk 1" heater hose but without a pre-formed bend, it just pinches shut. So i tried putting a copper plumbing elbow at the bend (1" OD) and I even heated it up to make more than 90 degree bend. For some reason the clamps didn't hold, it leaked. So I'm watching you take the 360 out of your motor home, and I see the hose from the water pump to the front of the intake manifold...yep I go get a hose for a 1973 Dodge 360 intake and after trimming an inch off one end it fits perfectly on the Datsun diesel. So thanks for solving my problem !

Tosh, Did you receive the pumpkin seeds that I sent your way? I remember last year you were talking up the pumpkins. I found some more seeds in my collection that are a warty pumpkin variety and I can send you some of those as well. We love the show and all of the baby goats. My little girl goats are 2 years old now and fun as ever! Shawnty and Cheyene are always in trouble with my angora goat Purity! We continue to spread the word about your show and family!!!

Thier is a tool to clean ring grooves but a old tip is use a piece of the old ring . Use a 55 gallon drum and block it up for a hot tank.

Watching you and the fam makes me happy. I was born 50 years too early sometimes I think and fifty years too late other times. 59 years ago when I was working on old iron Chevy small blocks and a British 4 banger all we had were books. You make me believe I could do this. Thank you. Back then there was too much learning on the job, shop manuals, and no real mentor, so it just did not work out that great at times. I built a very smoky four cylinder and a 327 with 202 heads, crane comp cam, new lifters and valve springs and push rods that lasted about a year before she blew. (I was a little hard on her though). It was so much fun but so stressful. Thanks for making feel like I need a shop again.
