25pdr Barrage: Combat Mission Battle for Normandy

First turn barrage with 4 25 Pounders vs an unfortunate German grenadier platoon in foxholes.
This is a weapons effects demo: being capable of penetrating and knocking out static, unresponsive targets does not necessarily translate into battlefield effectiveness against a thinking, moving enemy who shoots back. The damage caused is representative rather than definitive- strange things can happen!

The 25 pounder has VT shells? I’ve played this game for years and never knew that
@mumblerinc.6660

Not VT, but timed fuses. All artillery can get timed fuse air bursts if preplanned.

Yeah, just standard fuses timed for airburst. They're not 100% consistent like VT, but everyone gets them

I didn’t know that. VT is one of my favorite ways to use arty when I can

Holy crap, I guess I’ve always just turned my brain off and clicked through the fire mission buttons and never really looked.

@@usuallyhapless9481is that only for preplanned missions? I was about to ride in here on my mighty horse about how VT fuses weren't used in Normandy and the west front in general except for the Bulge!

That's quite accurate.

Seems unrealistically accurate for WW2 indirect fire

Actually for British artillery in WW2 it’s not that off. Britain got quite the reputation in WW2 for having quite good and accurate artillery troops. This mainly came from a combination of experience and training before the war. A lot of the artillery battery senior officers were veterans of the 1st World War and were quite implicit that British artillery would play a major part like it did in WW1 so demanded that they be equipped, trained and readied properly. This as above noted led into the training where artillery units were trained on high to keep up both movement and firing paces as well as accuracy for the potential need of WW1 like tactics again. This stuff actually lead to the Royal Artillery Corps become extremely good at their jobs and accuracy like this was quite common as officers wanted troops to be able to land their shots on target or near to as to be able to maximise damage on machine gun and bunker positions. Actually also had to be high as to allow artillery to be able to shell in the good old moving barrage tactics of WW1 letting them be able to cut wire, pin the enemy and then harry the reinforcements as the main assault goes in. However, you can say that the quality of the rounds can also be effected by who’s calling them in too. If a good old regular officer from the infantry is calling one in, they’ll get them on target but you wouldn’t expect much outside of the call and maybe some assistance in ranging. However, for Royal Artillery observers attached to frontline company’s and platoons, these guys were alot more used to directing artillery battery’s and even single guns onto targets perfectly. Unlike American forward observers who mainly helped guide in the shots and keep em on target letting the mass amount of firepower sent in from the guns do the work, the Royal Artillery were trained to be able to coordinate down to single guns on target positions (especially trench lines and fox holes like this) so as to better hinder and destroy key assets such as machine guns nests and targets of great hinderance and importance. TLDR: for British artillery coming from supporting 25pnds from the Royal Artillery, these are quite on point for their accuracy skills.

not quite a battleship salvo but still pretty good

You can't exactly take a battleship with you when going on campaign, unfortunately. Even stripped down into parts. :P

IIRC there plans by the British and Americans to deploy an 18" Railway Howitzer, 9.2" railway guns and 14" and 8" railway guns respectively to Northwestern Europe in 1944, but the state of the French railway network prevented that.

They’d also just end up motorizing/mechanizing and being more mobile than their German counterparts, slaved to the railway for supplies and replenishment- which allied air power would exploit ruthlessly, hampering a lot of the response and movement by the Wehrmacht to counter the advances of the allies.

Good accuracy while being effectively and good lethal.

Why were there only a few airburst rounds out of the mix? Can you reload all shells as airburst?
@usuallyhapless9481
@usuallyhapless9481 6 дней назад
In the WW2 games airbursts are achieved by timed fuses, so natural variability in shell travel time can make them hit the ground. That gets solved by US VT fuses from late war onwards and everyone in the modern titles has the benefit.
