Join me for a day in the life of a doctor, vlogging in the hospital for a 26 hour call shift! We start by seeing patients in the emergency department with pericarditis, vertigo and electrolyte problems, while running upstairs to put in feeding tubes and manage patients with aspiration pneumonia! Thank goodness I had a wonderful team of residents and medical students on with me that night…

26 Hours on Call is WAY easier than 12 Hours of straight work, and usually much more laid back with a decent amount of breaks with short intermittent bursts of action. Plus, we usually cant work for a minimum of 12 hours (sometimes more) after being on a 24 hour call-shift which gives us ample time to rest, and our weekly hours are usually capped to no more than 72 Hours per week, so that also helps, but is of course more than the standard 32 to 40 hour work week most people have.

@@ViolinMD hahaha yeah I guess. But this has always been of a question in my mind. Don't you think that if doctors and nurses took shorter shifts and more sleep this will help reduce some of the mistakes done by doctors due to tiredness and the need for sleep? P.S. Love your videos and will for sure stick to my dream of becoming a doctor! (If I survive IB)
@sivanmarkle5601
@sivanmarkle5601 5 лет назад
yousef abo goush I’m a nurse and people ask this a lot. I understand where you are coming from and it would be so much nicer to have shorter shifts to be able to go home earlier! However, having only 2 (12hr) shifts in a day compared to 3 (8hr) shifts means less nurses/Dr’s are handling the patient which means there is less communication errors and all information is given to the next shift and less information is being lost through shift changes. Think of it as the game telephone....you start out with a sentence and once so many people hear it the sentence isn’t the same anymore....it’s somewhat the same concept.

@kaylahuebner7646
@kaylahuebner7646 5 лет назад
HIPAA involves standards and accountability for maintaining confidentiality and security of a patients personal health information.While it can be relevant in cases where a physician or healthcare facility failed to provide and adequate quality of care for a patient, the rules and guidelines of HIPAA don’t directly or specifically govern malpractice (which is something different), but patient health information confidentiality.

Can someone who's smarter than me tell me why they make doctors do 25hr shifts sometimes? Seems like a lose-lose. You've got a doctor who's not operating at 100% and running on fumes, it'll take them even longer to recover the next day--what's the point? I'm sure there's a good reason but I've never figured it out. I personally wouldn't want a doctor who's sleep deprived and running on fumes to be treating me!
@marounjayden
@marounjayden 4 года назад
Well the main reason is for Doctors to get a specific part of the patients for the night. If there was only 1 doctor on call at night, it would also lower time for briefings and handovers which allows for more paperwork and studying! They also get rest (they're not totally awake all the time that's why its called a call shift, they only work when they need to) and finally obviously they love their job and can't get tired of it ever! Im 13 and want to be a doctor/surgeon but my cousin, aunt, and another half of my family are doctors so I now a lot about it! Hope that helped man, love your vids too!

Hi I am a practioner and I take call alot so yeah.. I think one of the biggest reasons is so the doctor is familiar with the patients. If you did 12 hour shifts and a patient is admitted for 3 days the patient would have to be seen 6 times which mat delay treatment since the new doc isn't familiar to the case. Hope this helps.

they’re on call. they only go somewhere if they’re need. so they’ll have to be able to come when called for 26 hours but usually aren’t seeing patients for more than half that time

This is because we know that sleep deprivation leads to breakdowns in cognitive function and judgment. The effects are very much like what alcohol intoxication looks like. So, why do they make doctors work long shits?

Aren't there rules regarding jewlery and hair in Canadian hospitals? I've worked at one here in Sweden, and regardless of what type of staff you are, no type of jewlery is allowed- especially rings and bracelets and shoulderlength hair (or longer) has to be up in a bun. Just asking out of pure curiosity 🤔😂 Like I've noticed in the U.S., people change at home whereas we change into work clothes at the hospital to preserve sterility and cleanliness as well as possible. 😊

emerg nurse in Canada here, rules can be pretty lax depending on the hospital, I'm allowed to wear my own shirts and we can do what we want with our hair. Lots of my coworkers wear their hair down and tie it up when things are going to get messy.

He would study with two books - one in English and on in Italian. All lectures in Italian. Idk how he did it. He is retiring next year finally. I wish you the best of luck with it all. I never understood why they have someone work over 24 hours. Doctors are tired and can’t make decisions as well after no sleep. It should be illegal to treat people as if they are machines who don't get tired. Absolute insanity to work this amount of hours at a time.

How many steps do you usually reach on an on-call shift like this? If you track them lol

I don't wear compression socks or stockings, but I do have an ankle brace or sleeve for my right bad ankle when it gets sore. Sometimes I take pain relief like paracetamol or ibuprofen, heatpack or cold pack.

Yes! I was also thinking the same thing. I know it's more gyneacology but being in the ER means you have to have an understanding. 6 Hospital visits in a year, 5 because of endo that needed pain management and operating. Many times it doesn't show up on ultrasounds etc so we get ignored:(
