Wow, you are so talented!!! My grown son, who has seen all the Harry Potter movies is now reading all the books. I was looking for a good tutorial to help me along to paint Hogwarts for him for Christmas. This was the best I’ve found!!! I’m just getting started but on an 8 x 10. Wow, the details are incredible. I happened to stumble on this video while in the process of also painting Hogwarts. Mine isn’t nearly as majestic and detailed as yours is but you gave me a few ideas. Excellent work. Will you be painting more fantasy pieces in the future?

Hello sir, loved the painting really!! As a huge harry potter fan I am planning to recreate this painting but I just have one question: did you trace the castle outline or drew it actually?

I actually drew it by hand. I always tell folks that if they are not good drawers they can certainly trace it. Like most young kids, I started off free-hand drawing things and got pretty good at spacial awareness and negative space. Send me a picture once you've recreated the painting. This is stunning! Thank you so much for doing the video. Any recommendations on how to do the fog and glow effects without an air brush?

Thanks Amber. Honestly, when working with acrylic, the best way to make fog without an air brush is to mix your bluish white paint really creamy. The consistency of soft butter. Then add a little to your filbert brush and dry brush blend it on in small circular motions. You want your paint brush very dry so don't add too much water, and you want little paint on the brush. It takes longer but it is achievable. Best of luck!

This is amazing! I have technical question: if I have a white gesso'ed canvas, do you suggest to first paint it black and then start with whitish, purplish, greyish layers?

Hi Joanna, thank you for your question. You could do this both ways. As you see in my video I start with a black canvas because I wanted to kill all the white from showing through my paint. However, so long as you apply thick enough paint, you could start from a white canvas. The challenges is that often if the paint it not thick enough the white canvas might show through and that can be frustrating. Therefore, I almost always tint my canvas with a grey or some earth tone color to kill all the white.

Hey Marc, this is so so amazing. Just wanted to ask if there is a printable of the Hogwarts sketch or what pencil/chalk did you use for the sketch?

Hello Amrita, I used a white charcoal pencil and the brand is General's number 558. You can pick them up in any craft section at a Michaels or Hobby Lobby. To my knowledge there is not a printable of the Hogwarts Castle. I looked up Hogwarts Harry Potter movie images from the film online and found a couple Hogwarts Castles I liked. I simply copied them onto my canvas. I like to free-hand sketch my images. I hope that helps! All the best!

Hello Micho, I used a simple palette and as you watch the video I do discuss the colors I am using. However, in summary, I used midnight black, titanium white, ultramarine blue, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, cadmium orange, dioxazine purple. That is about it. Great work, huge project done justice .Im working on a Batman project ready to add some of Gotham city in moonlight in the background ✨ woth buildings. Was thinking Phalo blue woth black for sky with titanium white .My base coat is a grey canvas. Any tips how to easily add the phalo and black to get best contrast as I'm still learning mixtures and tones .Thankyou keep it up

My advice as that things are not as dark as they appear. Stay a bit on the lighter side so that your detail will still show through and you can still give the impression that it is night time. Sometimes it is just a matter of trial and error. Thanks for your comment.

Thank you for your comment. Yes I used water and gesso. So long as you use canvas that has the protective pre-gesso treatment it should not harm your canvas.

Keep in mind that I painted this painting in acrylic paint, not oil. You cannot use water with oil unless you are using water-miscible oil paint. If you use traditional oil then You will need to use paint thinner or mineral spirit.

I would suggest using primarily blue/grey as your highlight color. Mix ultramarine blue with burnt umber in about a 70/30 ratio. Send me a photo when you are finished. Good luck!

Thanks for the question. Just like you see me do at the beginning of the painting, I used as airbrush to achieve that. You could also do it with a dry brush technique but it would take longer. If you do it with a brush I would recommend that you use a filbert brush that is fairly dry and as just a small amount of paint. Use white and ultramarine blue in about equal parts. Don't add to much paint and when you apply it, use small circular scrubbing motions very soft and gently. That will help to achieve a similar effect. Thanks for watching!

Question-Do you do any videos teaching the way Michelle the Painter does?… Your work is beautiful but it’s really just watching you paint on fast forward while you explain what you’re doing…and not something we can follow along and paint with you…. Actually, watching a 2-3 hour video doesn't bother me especially if it is showing me details that I am interested in seeing how it is done. I kind of wish you would post the full length in detail video.

Thank you for your comment. I will look into producing another full length video done in several small video segments! The biggest challenge is that a painting can take anywhere from 10 to 30 hours or more to complete spread over several days or weeks depending on the complexity and size of the piece. That is why things are often skipped or done in time laps.

I am sorry. Making a detailed tutorial requires too many hours of video and they take a lot of work to record, edit and download. Most people have about a 3 minute attention span before I lose them. That is why I have to do time laps videos. Thanks for watching!
