Lessons 1 and 2 taught us to relax and align the body so that the thighs do the work and the rest of the body is balanced like a scale. In lesson 3 we learn to adjust the fulcrum of the lever for superior balance, agility, and power. We also learn one of the least understood components of tai chi power generation.

The clearest tai chi video I have ever seen. No mystery or esoteric stuff. Bravo!

Now this is real deep Tai Chi structure. Most of Tai Chi practicioners only mimic the coreograph without knowing the structural aspects with depth (I am included among those). Great work.

What a great Sifu! Very well done and nice to see a teacher allow a student to Todd him around I s video for all the world to see! Much humility and a great sense if humor makes it easier to learn from your great depth of knowledge. I'm a former Shao-lin practitioner who is now too old to be jumping around and throwing high kicks. Recently started Tai Chi (Taiji) training under a grand master-to-be and enjoy it immensly. Thank you for sharing!

thank you BIG for this video. Saw another author mention leverage in a book. I always teach this trick to young women for holding a door against an unarmed intruder. Put her foot on the nob end and apply a little friction to the ground or a little weight the door don't move and she don't feel the intruder's force in her foot it goes back from the ground.

From Rochester, just paddle straight north to Trenton and follow the canal system to Orillia. The marina is a 9 minute walk from my studio. :-) As for a jab, commitment is relative. As skill increases, less commitment is required. Eventually, we learn to sense the part of the person's mind that wants to fall, and let them.

Great Video! Very Informative. It's also nice to see a video where the master isn't just beating up on their pupil!

hey Ian, u're a great teacher.. just a little concerned for your stamina. I've done Tajiquan for many years, and due to work, I got slipped disc d couldn't train as much. Tried getting into it recently, and realised I was breathing way harder than I've ever experienced before. Never had that problem, but I noticed u might be facing that issue too. Take care, and keep up the awesome work.

Ian, I've been following your videos for a while now. Very excellent stuff. Thank you for that. What are your thoughts on Qi, Yi and Jing (Jin)? Do you feel that there is a level of Taiji beyond just the alignments, etc (that transcends the alignment/leverage aspect so to speak), where we generate power using the mind? From personal experience, I can say that doing push hands can reveal a lot, especially about "reading/sensing" the other person's intent and energy (which is not necessarily telegraphed as skill levels increase). It doesn't really feel like mechanical force/energy at that point, it is something more ineffable. It is felt, but it is not momentum or force in the conventional sense. What are your thoughts on this?

I'd love a teacher like this, but it's hard to find any kind of Tai Chi stuff in Australia let alone Tai Chi that explores the Martial aspect and not just the medicine.

Took me many years of training before I came across a well trained "martial" Chen Tai Ji teacher.

My suggestion, if I were to make one, would be to avoid getting attached to styles. Each style is useful in its own way, as a vehicle to understanding the art. The art depends on what you want it to do. Sometimes you may have to choose between one method and another. But often, the experience of one will help you with another. I have learned from every style I have encountered, including Chinese arts, Medieval European arts, capoeira, kali/escrima, muay thai , judo, jiujitsu (including bjj, aikido, combato/defendo) and many many more. I was told years ago by a great teacher that I should try to learn from teachers and honour them. But I can never follow in their footsteps. Instead, I was told to seek what they sought.

These videos are great! You wouldn't happen to know of any good Tai Chi schools in the Rochester, NY area would you? Lake Ontario makes it a bit unfeasible to go to your school. Also, it seems that many of these techniques rely on the commitment of the opponent's momentum. How does a Tai Chi practitioner respond to an opponent who commits less to an attack, with more jabs for instance?

I've studied this on and off for the past 20 years and can see something here I've never understood before. Is there a video I can see of you doing your entire form straight through?
