I'd say regarding why there is so few in Harry's year is because that was the climax of the first war, so less people were having children and others were dying. Like 1978-81 was probably on the lower side of wizard babies.

Emily Deanne I always assumed there were multiple dorm rooms for each year, and we just never met all the kids in Harry's year.

Brizzy Voices With boggarts I say they become what you are afraid of, as Remus Lupin (RIP) showed in PoA he jumped in front of Harry's dementor boggart as he was afraid of what it would do to Harry and his classmates. Why else would Lupin jump in front of him?

Brizzy Voices what if I have the characteristics of a Ravenclaw, (which I proudly am) but I want to be a ( for example) hufflepuff. Harry could have been in slytherin. But, he chose to be in gryffendor. So does that mean anyone can choose to be in any house?
@elisewainwright9094
@elisewainwright9094 7 лет назад
Davileca C. Well remember what Harry said in the last movie and I quote "The sorting hat takes your choice into account too" so if you want to be in hufflepuff but the sorting hat thinks your a ravenclaw it will take your choice into account. So I'd say you have a 50/50 chance of getting into either. Because the sorting hat wants to choose what's best for you also

1000 divided by 7 years is approximately 143 students per year. 143 divided by 4 houses is 36 students in each house in each year. So if there are only 10 students in Gryffindor in Harry's year, another house or year would have to make up for this and have more than 36 students. I just feel like there were other students in Gryffindor in his year that were not talked about in the books.

@berrybaby1570
@berrybaby1570 7 лет назад
CZsWorld Growing up I had a friend who was Jewish, and she would celebrate both Chanukah and Christmas with her family. When we got older they stopped celebrating Christmas, reason being when she was younger it bothered her so much that all her friends got to celebrate Christmas and not her, so her family did. When she got older she understood more, and didn't care about doing something all of her friends were. So, you're not the only one, what you said is entirely possible. Especially because a lot of wizards may be muggle born, half blood, descendents of muggle borns, etc. Hermionie for example probably celebrated Christmas her whole life, so when she has kids they would probably celebrate as a family, then when her children have kids, and so on.

Actually, Jo answered why harry didn't see thestrals before. It was because to see a thestral you have to mourn the death first, you have to take it in. When he was a baby he didn't know what he was seeing. Then when he killed quirrell, he didn't mourn him, nor he really understood what he had done, because he was still too young. It's not until he sees cedric die that he knows what it means and only then he fully feels loss. That's why the next year (5th), when he has grieved, he's able to see thestrals. And about the technology and the efficient ways of muggles, I think that's the whole point. Back to basics, things we've forgotten, magic is all that matters.

WOULD FRED AND GEORGE BE A POSTUGUIST
@izzytodd4242
@izzytodd4242 6 лет назад
Cheeto_boss 3 No, because a poltergeist isn’t a ghost. It’s essentially a collection of memories. It’s all the mischievous students mischievous deeds put together. That’s why Peeves can touch solid objects without going through them. Fred might be good friends with Peeves, but Fred would be unable to do the things Peeves does, because Peeves is a poltergeist and Fred would just be a ghost. I like to think though that Fred would make Peeves stop making fun of the first years. I think Peeves would listen because of the way he respected Fred in the books. And no, Fred and George would not be ghosts at Hogwarts. Only Fred would. For obvious reasons.

i have a question. why didn't harry's parents just choose to be ghosts so they could raise their son.
@ilse_hh
@ilse_hh 5 лет назад
Because when a wizard dies he or she can only stay as a ghost if they're afraid of continuing and seeing what's next. If you stay as a ghost you're stuck in the middle of that, you didn't continue but you're not alive either. Many wizards that die decide to continue. So if they didn't stay as ghost was because they weren't afraid of continuing.

We get a glimpse of what death is like in deathly hallows. It's a very confusing thing and Harry viewed it as "boarding" a train (and Dumbledore). I believe that the Wizards aren't entirely sure what is happening so only those who are afraid of death remain behind. Edit sorry if this is confusing I'm typing from a phone

9:22 the difference between a poltergeist and a ghost is that a ghost is someone who was alive but then didn't want to leave the world when they died and a poltergeist not someone who has died but has been generated in a certain environment. e.g. peeves was generated at hogwarts because of all the mischief that happened with so many young people.

All right, here you go: 1. When Harry uses the Patronus Charm on the Dementor in the Triwizard Tournament, he realizes that it’s a Boggart because it stumbles. So it’s not literally turning into a Dementor-it’s more like a shadow of one. 2. In order to see Thestrals, it’s not enough to see someone die. You also have to understand and process what you’ve seen. Even after seeing Cedric die, he doesn’t see the Thestrals at first because he was still in shock. (And, yes, Harry passes out before Quirrell dies.) 3. I think it’s strongly preferable to tell them _before_ marriage, because otherwise it’s not fair to them. If they’re not cool with it, you modify their memory. Also, Lily didn’t actually do magic at home; Rowling said Petunia was exaggerating. Muggles can enter Diagon Alley if a wizard points it out to them. 4. No, your magical abilities are apparent by age seven. Hogwarts starts at eleven because it’s secondary school. Before that, wizards can either be homeschooled or attend Muggle primary schools. 5. The UK Prime Minister is only informed when the situation puts Muggles at risk. Like if you’re bringing dragons into the country or an alleged mass-murderer escapes from your high-security prison. 6. There’s a democratic election every seven years. (Although they’ll hold earlier elections if the Minister is removed from office.) There’s no limit to a Minister’s term. I highly doubt that Centaurs would have been permitted to vote. They also do not really recognize the Ministry as an authority. They likely would have found these _human_ matters beneath them. 7. NOOOOOO! It drives me crazy whenever people mention this! There was absolutely no reason for the Weasleys to see Pettigrew on the Marauder’s Map. Why would Fred and George be looking at their little brother’s dorm? They only used the Map to sneak around/out of Hogwarts. That’s why they gave Harry the Map-they’d already memorized all the secret passages, which was the main reason they used it. The only individuals they would have cared about seeing on that Map were Snape, Filch, Mrs Norris, etc. And with countless moving dots, they would never just _happen_ to see Pettigrew’s unless he were in the exact place they were looking. And before Sirius escaped, Scabbers was way too lazy for that to happen. 8. Cool question! I assume that it would eventually die. This reminds me of the Ravenclaw riddle about where Vanished objects go. 9. Yes (see #4). Hogwarts is a secondary school. (For Americans, that’s middle school combined with high school.) For primary school education, students attended Muggle schools or were homeschooled. 10. Because it’s a fixed timeline. Also, I know this wasn’t the question, but I often see people upset that the Time Turner was used to save Buckbeak instead of, e.g., Harry’s parents. So just in case anyone here is wondering: They use it to save SIRIUS. Saving Buckbeak is a means to that, and it’s nice because they can save _two_ innocent lives. But they wouldn’t have gone to all that trouble just for Buckbeak. And the only reason they were able to save either one of them was that neither one had been killed/Kissed yet. 11. Since it’s the Department of Mysteries, we can’t be sure, but the brains seem to be corporeal thoughts. (Like Madam Pomfrey tells Ron, “Thoughts can leave deep scars.”) The HP Wiki mentions that Legilimency was likely used there. 12. Yeah, the veil is used as a metaphor for death throughout the series, even when they’re not in the room. But that’s a really neat theory about the ghosts! (Or would their incorporeality prevent them from going through?) It could also be used for the death penalty, if that’s ever a thing… 13. Yes, that was the point! It makes Sirius’s death all the more devastating! But just to remind you, Harry didn’t even open the package until after Sirius’s death. When Sirius gives it to him, he vows never to open the package because he’s worried that Sirius will leave Grimmauld Place to help him and get caught. So when the time comes and he really needs it, he’s forgotten all about it. 14. I’m not entirely sure what the question was here, but the series _did_ take place in the ’90s. 15. BUT THE ÆSTHETIC!!! 16. Skele-Gro is a magical solution to a magic problem. Shrinking your teeth is cosmetic. Even Muggles have acne creams (although ours are way less effective). Eyesight seems different, you know? It’s genetic, so it may be inherently a part of you. Plus it would have to be incredibly specific, as everyone’s eyesight is going to be different. I would definitely not want to mess around with that! 17. Poltergeists are spirits of chaos. They are not dead humans, as they are neither human nor dead. They are probably amortal. Poltergiests usually do not take physical forms (but there are exceptions, like Peeves). Unlike ghosts, which are always incorporeal, poltergeists can move solid objects and directly interact with the physical world. 18. LOL. That would make it harder to conceal your wand and could potentially hinder your wrist movement, although it might prevent you from losing a buttock. 19. Nah, Aurors are way too important for that. But other Ministry employees deal with that sort of thing. Different departments handle different crimes. 20. Because Veritaserum can be fought. It only works on Barty Crouch, Jr. because he was extremely vulnerable at the time. This is similar to how polygraphs are rarely admissible in court. 21. This would definitely depend on the individual. I can’t speak for Christianity, but here’s my personal opinion as an Orthodox Jew: Divine occurrences would not be perceived as magic, as that would detract from their validity. However, magic could potentially be viewed as divine. Additionally, we take many things for granted that can be perceived as miraculous. 22. I WANT TO KNOW SO BADLY. Like, I know I shouldn’t want to, but I do. 23. Yes, you can still remember it. The cool thing is that humans actually do remember all that stuff, but we aren’t able to access our memories in so much detail. And if you leave it in your Pensieve, it’s not that you’ve lost your memory. It’s that you’re able to concentrate on other things. Personally, I think Pensieves could be immensely helpful for people with anxiety. 24. HA HA HA MATH. There were only forty students in Harry’s year. Don’t think about it too much. Although, if you do think about it, think about how the numbers were likely impacted by Voldemort. 25. It’s EXTREMELY difficult to make. Ron asked about it after Harry got Slughorn’s memory. Aside from being super complicated, it takes six months to brew. It also has dangerous side effects if you use it too frequently. In fairness, though, they did use it before the battle of Hogwarts in HBP. 26. Yup, they’re based on the painters’ impressions. But since Dumbledore knew his death was coming, he talked to his portrait a LOT beforehand, in preparation. And I don’t know if portraits ever marry, but the Fat Lady and Violet sure seemed pretty close…

7. I just want to add, that when Pettigrew faked his death the twins would have been around 3 years old. The twins either don't know or remember Pettigrew's name. So IF they just happen to see Pettigrew's name, they would think it just another student.
@TheLadyWhoLunches

Can you enlighten me as to when, Arthur told Ron about Pettigrew's Finger? I don't remember that.
@TheLadyWhoLunches
@TheLadyWhoLunches 7 лет назад
Sure! It's a quote from PoA, chapter eleven ("The Firebolt"), page 215 in the American hardcover edition: "Listen… you know what Pettigrew's mother got back after Black had finished with him? Dad told me - the Order of Merlin, First Class, and Pettigrew's finger in a box. That was the biggest bit of him they could find."
@oz1141

TheLadyWhoLunches Thanks :) It doesn't say when Arthur told Ron that story. I can see Arthur telling them (Ron, Ginny, Fred and George) after Sirius broke out of Azkaban, that would make since. IF Arthur told them after, then I stand my original comment. "The twins either don't know or remember Pettigrew's name."

Brizzy Voices Tessa Netting regarding the time turner question if you read the phrase on the larger ring it says and I quote: “I mark the hours every one Nor have I yet outrun the sun” so I think that means you can’t go back more than a day cause it can’t outrun the sun so maybe that’s why . There's something that's always bugged me when people say "oh harry why don't you save your parents instead of buck beak?" Even if he did , it would literally create a paradox where harry goes back and isn't an orphan but then he never has to go back , so he would go back again and yadda yadda yadda.

I agree with you. Also even if Harry wanted to go back and save his parents, he couldn't. The Time Turner that Hermione had belonged to the Ministry, and was limited to go back in time 5 hours. The time turner only goes back in time, is that right? Then if Harry went back 12 year he has to live those 12 without being seen. And is he getting older during that time, some when his 13 year old self disapear there is a 25 year old Potter there to take his place?
@kmarshirley
@kmarshirley 6 лет назад
I mean it would also just be impossible. There is 8,760 hours in a year. And harry would have to go back 13 years by the time he finds out about the time turner. 113,880 hours in 13 years. He would have to rotate the time Turner this many times. No one could do that. And even then what's he going to do? I guess he could go back and warn Sirius not to make Peter their secret keeper. That would probably be the easiest. But then Voldemort wouldn't have died and the future would be even worse. Yea no he cant change that. They definitely should have used the time turner at the end of book four though.... if he went back or who ever, doesn't have to be harry, they could warn Dumbledore that the cup is a portkey and Dumbledore and a few other powerful wizards could've used the portkey to go to the graveyard and kill Voldemort before he got his power back and stuck Peter in azkaban. I mean I really don't get why they couldn't do this. Maybe its bc the time turners are owned by the ministry of magic and they didn't believe harry so why would they give them a time turner. Idk I just feel like at this point Dumbledore should have his own time turner.

In theory, yes. Even though a person lives after their soul has been taken out (Barty Crouch Jr), they're in a vegetative state for the rest of their lives. I have one: How come Harry gets “expelled” when he does magic in front of Dudley even though, the muggle-borns perform magic in front of their parents and Dudley was family? And: The answer to the question about Wizarding kids before they go to Hogwarts is that some families home school their kids before they go to Hogwarts because that’s what Molly Weasley did for her kids. Also: I think ghosts can’t touch things because they would just go right through them and Poulterguists (don’t know how to spell that) can touch and move things(and drop things on students:)) AND: Peter Pettigrews death was very publicized and he received an order of Merlin first class award so he was pretty famous so the twins had to have known who he was.

That is even canon, because J.K. Rowling said that on her old website😉 _I’ve been asked this a lot. _*_Harry didn’t see his parents die. He was in his cot at the time (he was just over a year old) and, as I say in ‘Philosopher’s Stone’, all he saw was a flash of green light._*_ He didn’t see Quirrell’s death, either. Harry had passed out before Quirrell died and was only told about it by Dumbledore in the last chapter._ _He did, however, witness the murder of Cedric, and it is this that makes him able to see the Thestrals at last. Why couldn’t he see the Thestrals on his trip back to the train station? Well, I didn’t want to start a new mystery, which would not be resolved for a long time, at the very end of the fourth book. I decided, therefore, that until Harry is over the first shock, and really feels what death means (ie, when he fully appreciates that Cedric is gone forever and that he can never come back, which takes time, whatever age you are) he would not be able to see the Thestrals. After two months away from school during which he has dwelled endlessly on his memories of the murder and had nightmares about it, the Thestrals have taken shape and form and he can see them quite clearly._ Source: web.archive.org/web/20110623034324/www.jkrowling.com/textonly/en/faq_view.cfm?id=21 I wish you a blessed weekend🙋‍♀️

My theory about the marauders map (NOTE: this theory is for the books only!!! If it was based on the movies it wouldn't work!!!) = Fred and George Weasley didn't realise Peter Pettigrew in Ron's bed every night on the marauders map because they couldn't see him. The marauders, just in case their map got into the wrong hands, would've made it so that if the user of the map didn't know that the person was an animagus, when that person was in their animagus form, the user of the map would not be able to detect that person. This would make sense as the marauders wouldn't want a teacher to find the map and realise they were all animagi. Harry also didn't see Peter Pettigrew on the map when he was wandering round at night in the books - he instead saw Barry Crouch Jr (the movies changed it to make it more mysterious). To prove this theory, Snape (at the end of book 3) travelled to the shrieking shack. He knew, from the marauders map, that Sirius was there as Sirius was in his human form while at the shrieking shack. However, he had no idea Peter was also with them as he was in his animal form at the time and Snape didn't know he was an animagus. Also, in the fourth book, Rita Skeeter (when in her animal form) is never spotted by Harry. This is because he had no idea that she was an animagus at the time. Theory explained, class close and question answered. Mischief Managed. (NOTE2 = I just want to say that this is a theory I had which I found explained it all quite well - of course Fred and George might've just not looked at Ron or anything too! I just wanted to share this with everyone.)

On the topic of Harry's eyes (and other wizards and witches who wear glasses), my personal theory is that the eyes are seen as the windows to the soul and if you try to change them with magic so the person can see 20/20, part of the person's soul could be damaged, altered, or even destroyed in bad situations. Since the eyes show such character of a person, part of their human nature or entire personality is so authentic and honest that to try to alter the 'windows' to that special place is dangerous and the person could lose all that they are. I feel like the pensieve would be like writing down a memory. For example: you write down a memory soon after it happened, so you haven't forgotten any details yet. Later, when you start to forget details of your memory, you can go back, look at what you wrote, and be reminded of what happened. I don't think putting a memory in the pensieve would cause you to forget the memory; I think it's just a way to preserve important memories so you can always remember it perfectly. This could also explain Dumbledore's comment about having "too many thoughts and memories crammed into [his] mind". When something important happens, I'm sure he has a lot of thoughts and theories about it, and he probably DOES feel like there's too many thoughts in his head, and he doesn't want to forget any details in case they turned out to be important information later. Once he puts the memories in the pensieve, he probably feels a sense of relief because it doesn't matter if he forgets a few details because he has the memory preserved. I don't know if that made any sense, but that's just how I always thought it worked! :)

@Oratnik88
@Oratnik88 7 лет назад
I dont remember if they say it exactly like that but I remember that snapes takes them out and put them in the pensieve at the beginning of the class and then he put them back. Thats why Harry sneaks in to the pensieve when Snape go out tho see what happen to Wharrington and he enter into the memorie of Jammes bullying Snape , so you can asume that he takes out his memories to prevent harry to read them. (In one ocassion harry actually use legilimency unintended and he watch a snape crying as a kid but thats was a just quick flash of a memory )
@_Meekay_
@_Meekay_ 7 лет назад
Oratnik88 oh, I just assumed snape already had the memories in the pensieve; not just to prevent Harry from seeing them. To me, it doesn't seem like Snape would put his memories in the penseive to keep Harry from seeing them because he wouldn't expect Harry to be good at occlumency, much less legilimency, so he probably wouldn't see a need to do that. And Snape knows that Harry is prone to sneak around the castle, so why would he give him easier access to his memories instead of just keeping them inside his head especially since Snape is an excellent legilimence? I guess there's no definite way to know the answer, but that's what I thought XD

Mavis Queen I think that there are some students that bring muggle stationary to Hogwarts, and they are just not mentioned. They'd be super excited to use a quill and keep at it.

Hi!!!!!!!! Love the channel! I think the reason Harry can't see thestrals is because (I'm pretty sure) although he saw he mother die, he couldn't comprehend death at the time. I'm not quite sure if killing someone counts as seeing death. Also, I read somewhere that the Maurauder's map only shows those who you are concerned about, so Gred and Forge, whoops, Fred and George wouldn't have seen Petigrew, as they did not know he existed, and therefore, did not care about him. Was anyone else creeped out by the fact that Harry pretty much stalked Ginny using the Maurauder's map when he was hunting for horcruxes? The book states that he would stare at her dot in the Gryffindor dormitory on the map......... Last I checked, Moaning Myrtle was also a poltergeist, because she could affect the water in the bathroom. Pop sockets for wands!!!! LOL! That would be great! I think if wizards were Christian, they could have destroyed Voldemort with a Bible.............

As a baby Harry was to young to fully process greif plus your mind apparently can't create memories until your 18 months old I think. I hope that explained it partially. They either go to Muggle primary school or there's a wizard primary school or they're homeschooled. The training and academic requirements of an Auror seem to mirror that of the SEALS or marines so I don't think they'd be the muggle equivalent of a traffic cop. Arthur weasley seemed to be a sort of desk cop so maybe given the convenience of it they were just desk cops that would send notices or a small division of the ministry to dispand minor threats. Maybe.

Is there another way for students to get on platform 9 and 3/4 without having to cross through the barrier? It's always nearly empty around the barrier whenever harry gets there. You'd think there would be a line or a crowd surrounding it if there are really 1,000 kids going to hogwarts that need to ride the train.
@claudiaescate9573
@claudiaescate9573 7 лет назад
Students can choose how they get to Hogwarts, the school provides the train service, but if you live near the school it wouldn't make sense to go all the way to London in order lo go back to Hogwarts. I think there's also said that you get between Wizard towns via train, so you can still get to Hogsmeade if you don't go to King's Cross. So that may explain what there is not a big amount of people trying to enter the barrier at the same time, and it doesn't look suspicious.

The thing with the time turner (without mixing too much cursed child) it could cause some ripple in time I think. If harry went back to the 31st of October when his parents died, and stopped Voldermort somehow, things would ne extremely different for him and would cause a increible difference in time and space of time. It would confuse all the info and when they went back to present time, everything would be completely different to adapt to. I dunno, thats my theory :) xx ps: difficult to answer the question without thinking in cursed child

@Lucy-it3pk
@Lucy-it3pk 5 лет назад
but if he had gone back in time to save his parents, his parents would have been alive for his whole life as time changes everything. By going back in time to save his parents, that would keep them alive at the point that Harry goes back in time to save them. Harry would see no point in going back in time so his parents would die anyway. Time is an ongoing cycle. If you are going to fix something with a timeturner, it will have already happened. That is why you should never mess with the space time continuum.

The rule for seeing the thestrals is that you have to understand the death you saw and truly comprehend its meaning. Harry wouldn't know what death meant if he saw James and Lily die. That's why he only saw the thestrals in the fifth book, and not immediately after Cedric died.
