261 - Very Thin Cahokia Arrowhead Flintknapping Burlington Chert

I burn through this arrowhead pretty fast. This is my normal pace. I broke two arrowheads before this and I was also getting really impatient. If this one didn't turn out, I was going to move on to another project for the day.
I also skipped the commentary to save time.
Hope you enjoy.

Beautiful projectile! I appreciate that part at the end of the video in regards to the breakage on the first two attempts. Those unsuccessful attempts are definitely part of the discovery process. It has taking me a while to figure that out for myself, but it is all part of the learning process, which never seems to end! LOL. Thanks again for a great video!

Thanks. Breaking teaches you the limits. It's a very important part of the process, I agree.

Thanks. That anvil was developed after many, many frustrating breaks across the notches. It's a convex piece of wood (osage orange) with a piece of black leather glued to the wood. The surface is convex or "domed" so that only the part that I'm applying pressure to is making contact withe the anvil. This prevents bending stress during the notching. I've broken way too may arrowheads with flat pads or notched pads.

I'm just beginning but for the last 30 every I would cringe every time you struck your flaker against it just knowing it was going to snap. I'm guessing achieving a point that delicate is a challenge more than a utilitarian purpose? I was thinking when is he going to stop!? Awesome work, I hope to be that good one day, you have incredible control.

Very thin points would very often break off in the wound and were used primarily for warfare. But they do require a good deal of skill to make and, consequently, were not as common as the thicker ones.

How much inward pressure do you put on the indirect flakes tip with your point hand? Maybe this is where I'm going wrong.ive been just setting the tip where I think it needs to be on the platform.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 5 лет назад
I apply very little inward pressure: just enough to keep it in contact without sliding. But you can apply as much inward pressure as your grip will allow.

@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 4 года назад
The hammer type of flaking is called " indirect percussion". And I'm not exactly sure why I change from one technique to the other. It usually boils down to what seems to be working or not working at the time.

We're these points used? I thought they were mostly ceremonial and found in caches or graves. Do people find examples as finely made as yours in the same context as any other common point? Beautifully made by the way. Good video.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 6 лет назад
Thanks Paul. Yes, they were used. They were also found in caches and in graves as you mentioned. Lesser quality points are more common, but all were used. There is evidence of impact fractures and snaps from impact (on certain damaged examples) from all Cahokia tri-notch types. I'm not sure about the more exotic styles like Tribute points, though.

@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 9 лет назад
Th3uNn3rV3d If you go back to some of my earliest videos, you'll see me use "organic" materials. It's called "abo" technique in the flintknapper community (short for "aboriginal"). Here's one of a five-part series I made: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s4KbQTqOXFs.html You're right. There is not much evidence that copper tools were used. I use copper because it's cheaper and easier for me than organic material.

Does support help carry a flake?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 4 года назад
Rarely. But it depends on where the support is. If the support is on the opposite side of the strike, then yes. If the support is pressing onto the path of the flake, then no, especially if the flake is removed with downward pressure instead of inward pressure.

FlintknapperJimmy Hi Jimmy! Good question. Yep, I do some pressure flaking but I don't like to film it. It's hard to get close-up views... especially when clamping my legs together to get more leverage. In addition, all of it is abo and I'm still working on "film-worthy" abo techniques. I never do any pressure flaking with copper other than short flakes along the edges.
