Ground resonance is an imbalance in the rotation of a helicopter rotor when the blades become bunched up on one side of their rotational plane and cause an oscillation in phase with the frequency of the rocking of the helicopter on its landing gear. The effect is similar to the behavior of a washing machine when the clothes are concentrated in one place during the spin cycle. It occurs when the landing gear is prevented from freely moving about on the horizontal plane, typically when the aircraft is on the ground.
Articulated rotor systems with drag hinges allow each individual blade to advance or lag in its rotation to compensate for stress on the blade caused by the acceleration and deceleration of the rotor hub (due to momentum conservation). When the spacing of the blades becomes irregular, it shifts the rotor's center of gravity from the axis of rotation, which causes an oscillation. When the airframe begins to rock back and forth from the oscillation, the oscillations can reinforce each other and cause the rotor's center of gravity to spiral away from the axis of rotation to a point beyond the compensating ability of the damping system.[1]
Ground resonance is usually precipitated by a hard landing or an asymmetrical ground contact, and is more likely to occur when components of the landing gear or damping system are improperly maintained, such as the drag hinge dampers, oleo struts, or wheel tire pressure. Under extreme conditions, the initial shock can cause violent oscillations that quickly build and result in catastrophic damage of the entire airframe. In some cases, complete destruction occurs, e.g. body panels, fuel tanks, and engines are torn away, even at normal rotor speed.

I had GR once on the H300, when I start flying... I had around 30 hrs... Luckily the instructor was with me, and seems crazy but just earlier that day he was telling me why was very important to keep the RPM at full noise for a little bit after landing, instead of closing the throttle as soon as the skid touch the ground... and yes, GR happened and he picked the helicopter up straightaway, and was all good... thank you again Kenny for sharing this videos ... 🚁👍

I've been catching up on your excellent channel recently. I flew with an ex-RNZAF Vietnam veteran pilot, Don, who had a very similar experience in a Hughes TH-55. Just as in your case, he was unceremoniously ejected from the aircraft. All the flying I did with Don was in '47 G-SOLY, the first Soloy conversion on the UK register. No such issues with a '47 thankfully. Thank you sir.

This is one of the reasons I prefer semi-ridged. I only have a handful of hours in fully-articulated's but I feared this more than mast bumping in the Robby's. I mean with mast bumping its easy to avoid, just never dive the nose and slow down in turbulence, but with this its like,..."How do I avoid it again?,...and what exactly do I do if it happens? Get it on the ground fast?, or roll the throttle up to slam the blades against the stops, and fly away...?" I've been told both?

No way…NOT me. In my mind, your chances of surviving the G-R incident are greater certainly than the ‘boom chop’. With a severed tail, you’re DONE every time. It’s not THAT easy to get into a full Ground resonance situation IF you’re paying attention AND in control of the helo..or knowledgable about what it takes to stay out of G-R. I’ve had int onset brieflyonly a couple of times in the Schweizer 300. BOTH times were fixed different ways though; a FULL-down on the collective AND also picking it back up IF RPM’s are ‘near the top’. Both worked fine..

Ground resonance on helicopters has been around for a very long time,historically Hunting Percival in 1946 built the P-74 with three bladed articulated main rotor which suffered extreme ground resonance before it even got off the ground and the design was abandoned until further research had been done,the helicopter genius Hafner was well aware of the problems too and warned other manufacturers of the issues & dangers of flailing rotor blades that get out of control,there is a lot to be said for rigid rotors as used in Vietnam,they proved sturdy in battle situations but were not really taken seriously by manufacturers of civil helicopters afterwards. Thank you Helicopter Online Ground School for highlighting these hidden killers in helicopter design,the problems as we know are real and need more exposure towards trainee helicopter pilots.

As an engineer is simple. There is something called resonance and natural frequencies. Every solid object had one, its simply a vibrational frequency which that object would break. Think of a glass that breaks when you scream loud enough into it. if the engine of the aircraft reaches resonance with that of the earth beneath it it'll shake apart.

You'll Never experience Ground Resonance with that Fool proof method!!! The fact is that helicopters are Very safe and Very useful, and no matter how many thousands of hours of flight experience a pilot has, there will always be an unknown variable to deal with in ANY peice of machinery. The best thing a pilot can do is to continue to train with high time instructors, continue to challenge their knowledge to the next level, and so on. The instructor here is Very well trained but there appeared to be an equipment malfunction, one of a thousand variables. He did the right thing and hung on till there was nothing left to hang on to. Helicopters with fully articulated rotors (3 bladed or more) and its caused by pilot error
@OOTurok
@OOTurok 5 лет назад
@ Most causes of helicopters suffering from Ground Resonance, is caused by improper maintenance or component failure in the rotor hub... most notably with varying quality &/or failure of the drag hinge components, causing the blades to predominantly lead or lag to one side of the rotor disk, resulting in an imbalance of its CG. This is why most cases of GR occurs during initial spin up. That's not pilot error.

Fully articulated is a type of rotor system.

It is one of the 3 main types of rotor systems on today’s helicopters. The term means that each individual blade can flap, lead/lag, and feather to account for un equal lift amounts in foreward flight. Usually only found on machines with more blades than two, such as an md500.

What was the accident report for your ground resonance accident ?
@HelicopterGround
@HelicopterGround 4 года назад
Analysis The certified flight instructor (CFI) stated that the student smoothly lowered the collective and set the helicopter on the ground as he was rolling off the throttle. The helicopter then started to bounce (ground resonance) and the CFI reached down to make sure the collective was down and the throttle was off. The helicopter continued to "shake violently and ripped itself apart." The helicopter had a new design of elastomeric damper installed 91 flight hours before the accident. The new design dampers had been flight tested at the factory and approved by the Federal Aviation Administration prior to being put into service. The helicopter had experienced severe vibrations on two previous flights, one of which resulted in the chin bubble being broken. Inspection of the accident dampers, at the damper manufacturer's factory, determined the dampers were within manufacturer's specifications. After the accident flight the helicopter manufacturer recalled all the new design elastomeric dampers.

Depends on the situation. If rpm is low throttle off. If you are at operating at full rpm get it flying again.
@ferrybaqdiono4088

as theoretical the resonance happen in specific frequency, then to escape the resonance we shall avoid this speed by increase speed or reduce speed immediately, it is possible to brake the rotor and reduce throttle simultaneous?
@HelicopterGround
@HelicopterGround 2 года назад
Recovery is often possible if action is taken quickly. If sufficient rotor RPM exists, immediate takeoff can restore rotor balance by allowing the airframe to freely move and help damp the oscillation. If rotor RPM is very low during a ground resonance incident, complete shutdown may be sufficient.
