269 - Ambushed at Thorne Lock by Lots of Little Land Lubbers

In todays vlog we we travel from Barnby Dun to Thorne on the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation. Its a very cold day in January and we need diesel so we turn onto the Stainforth and Keadby Canal so we can visit Stanilands Marina.
Then its just a short hop to the moorings in Thorne but at the lock we come across a school who appear to be on a field trip and so Michael ends up holding a spontaneous Q&A in the lock.

Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.

Brilliant timing for both you and the little people. Also rewarding for the teaching staff as they had loads to talk write and draw about “ on the day they saw the boat go through the lock” memories they will never forget . Memorable for you too. 👌🏻

We did eventually visit Fishlake with Jo’s dad and walked around his childhood haunts... wish we’d video’d it as well, but it was more a personal trip. Loved the little ones and the impromptu class, really made my day! M

I remember Stanilands before the marina was built. When the Margraves owned it I went to Jane's 18th birthday party in the big shed. Where you're moored now used to be Dunston's boatyard, where they launched the barges sideways into the canal.

I like the music from Fishlake onwards a lot! Until this film it´s been a while now since that music with the trumpets was on. The kids probably went home to the parents trying to convince them to hire a boat for the summer.

Michael went into full ninja mode as soon as you all set off :) And so many minigoozlers! I'm glad that lock was wide and long enough that M wasn't having to spend every second worrying about getting hung on a cill or getting the front button caught on a gate, etc. Very glad you weren't so terribly cold and damp that there was no out-videos. I was really looking forward to seeing how you all enjoyed the Q&A. And soooo glad there was a Lidl for you!

I watch a few of you RU-vid narrow-boaters and my observation is that while you live on boats, you're not nautical folk. Your clothing is a dead give-away. Proper foul weather gear would make your time standing a watch much more pleasant. I couldn't count the number of days I spent beating into heavy seas, raining bullets, green water coming aboard, and at the end of my watch, been warmer and drier than you guys motoring down a mill pond like canal in a gentle rain. (Otherwise, love the channel!)

Mint green boat at 7:19 sure is bright in the overcast light. I like that sequence at 7:53 with camera rotating under the bridge and Michael coming in to view, looks downright cinematic. That was cool at Thorne Lock. :)

Great vlog, well I love the time laps, especially on bits we’ve been on, which after nearly 60 boating years is most of it! Hope you enjoyed the tidal Trent when you did it, we went Keadby to Cromwell once on a spring tide, and measures our speed, using the old mile posts, at 12 mph! Slightly worrying on a boat that could only manage 5 mph!😳 Keep up the good work, only just joined your channel (as recommended by the Foxes!), really enjoying it, PLUS I’ve got plenty to catch up with during the dreaded “lockdown”. Thanks! The Trent was lovely, but we were on quite high water coming down, so even with the tide most of the way we were pushing against the current, so we were around 2-3 MPH the whole way! Enjoy catching up, hopefully there’s enough to see you through! M

That exol pride is an absolute monster like nothing ive seen before or since on the canals I have travelled on . Only left thorne about 4 weeks ago but seems a long time somehow probably cos didn't get far due to the Virus. That guy at Thorne with the bird food is a menace and has been spoken to by the crt cos of the state the moorings get in . Can't understand some folk. I have watched every one of your videos from the beginning. I am glad to see you must be making some effort to avoid "basically" and "like" which is problematic with the English language today. It was inherited from the Yanks. As Judge Judy would say, "Don't give me basically. I don't want to hear basically or like." In your second last video you spoke about how the videos are assembled. You explained the very fast "fast forwarding" when cruising the canals. I understand why but I just love the English countryside and the beauty of it. I wish it could be done at a slower pace for more appreciation. I also love your explanations of places you visit and the history. You put a lot into it. I live in the wet tropics of North Queensland where it is hot and often high humidity. I smile when I see how cold you have it here. We need to average our climates.

Depends on who you talk to, really. Technically a barge in the context of canals and rivers is a flat-bottomed boat that’s dedicated to cargo, and usually is towed instead of moving under its own power. So a wide-beam (which is really just any canal-going boat that’s double the width of a narrow-beam) could be a barge, but isn’t if it’s not a cargo carrier. Then there’s the Dutch Barge, which is a specific type of (usually, but not always wide-beam) boat form that originated on the Dutch canals... the front is usually enclosed (no door at the bow) and the rear has a full roofed cabin, which can usually be disassembled or lowered to travel under bridges. M

Hi guys, can you tell me if there is access to the River Trent between East Stockwith and Gainsborough, then on to the Fossdyke? I'm guessing you've already gone down (upstream) to the Chesterfield Canal, and may well be heading/have headed to the Fossdyke if you're able to do so from East Stockwith. Thanks.

There is access but it is essential travel only at the moment which means to get food or water etc
